Summary: Better be organized
Review: The new Civ title was certainly worth the wait. The new features
are top notch and if you don't keep a track of things you will
be quick to have problems as organization of resources and people are a large portion of early use. Failure to do so could mean a quick end to the game by rivals (even on chieftan level). A word a advice, search out iron early you'll need it and build lots of roads.

Summary: Almost perfect, but can be tedious
Review: Once again I am up late playing Civ! Overall the game rocks but can really bog down once you get past the year 1500.

The fact that each civilization has their own unigue units (Ex: Rome has the Legion) is nice to see, but sometimes the special unit is dependant upon a specific resource..if your lucky enough to have the resource you are in business; if not be prepared to trade for it. In my current game I seem to have a lot of the World's Saltpeter (necessary for Riflemen) and the other nations pay well for it.

As in the Old Civ games, you starting point is very important (I have started 2 games with my first settler surrounded by desert - these did not last long). Initially the turns go by quickly, but after 1500 or so the game takes a while to process the AI turns (and my computer is a P3 633). That is the only reason I do not give it 5 stars; it really gets slow in the mid to end game.

But overall, I would recommend this game and warn those who buy it to be prepared for some late nights....

Summary: I'm not meant to run the blender, let alone a civilization
Review: Truth be told, I have only logged a few hours of Civilization 3 but it's enough to decide I really enjoy this simulation. However, I don't think that I'm meant to succeed at ruling an entire nation.

To give an example, I first started playing as the Americans. I had a prosperous though modest nation built up with cute Christmas themed cottages and even a boys choir singing in the town's square. Then the unthinkable occured at the first sign of the upcoming harsh winter, the simple townsfolk turned to cannibalism. The women of the village stewed their children and the men resorted to eating each other. It was a ghastly sight and I realized these crazy people were never going to survive to see the Spring. Next I decided to play the English and I built dense cities to leave enough room for farming. I was doing much better until the townspeople decided to make rats the official family pet in the already crowded towns. Sure enough I found myself hopeless as most of my villagers died of the Black Plague. Next I tried my luck as the Spartans. I didn't get very far due to such a low population growth (and there were plenty of women, if you know what I mean). I did get far enough to invent disco and leather pants though, ironically.

I haven't had all bad luck with Civilization 3. In my latest game I'm playing the American Indians and I've got a vast nomadic and happy empire. Just before I started writing this review, I was blessed with visitors from across the oceans bearing gifts!! These white skinned men seemed so nice, I'd venture to say that they will help my simple people flourish and grow.

Summary: More of the same!
Review: There's not a whole lot about Civ that's changed in the latest version, but that's what I love about it. Oh, they added some nice stuff: more victory conditions, special units for each civ, better diplomacy, better graphics, a better system for trade, and a few other treats. But where the game wasn't broke, they didn't try to fix it.

It's basically the same gameplay experience as Civ or Civ II but slightly tweaked, smoothed out, and worked over. It's evolutionary, not revolutionary. If you liked the first two in the series, you'll like this one.

My recommendation: get it. Just don't forget to eat and sleep in between games.

Summary: Very Difficult!
Review: Civilization III is very nice on the eye with excellent graphics and sound. However, event at the regent level, I find myself having immense problems keeping up in research with the computer foes. I also have a bone to pick with Firaxis/Infrogames about the price. However, maybe I am not in tune with current game prices. I can usually buy 2 or more games for the same price. However, besides, this I found the game in question, i.e., Civilization 3 by Infogrames Entertainment to be very entertaining and I will verily waste many "good" hours playing this game. Recommended.

Summary: Bad programmer NO donut
Review: This is the worst game I have ever purchased! I have been gaming for over 20 years, have the first Civ game...
To play Sid's game you must only do it his way! If you play the game with your own strategy as opposed to one that the programmers thought up and HARDCODED INTO THE game, then you loose. Even at the very simply level you can only do certian things.
Can you envision an enemey army getting into your country and pillaging to their hearts content? One enenmy unit can caputre all the workers & send them home? One pikeman can pillage all the roads... This is beyond bad/stupid.
Did the developers expect you to ring all of your territory with troops so that no one can get in???? Not the brightest rock in the pile.
This game has features that are a result of trying to be different than the last several civ games!!!

IF I could give this game no stars I would.

Summary: Like Working But Not Getting Paid
Review: I am an extreme fan of the first two installments of the Civilization series. I enjoyed carving an empire with my own two hands and driving all others into the sea.

However, Civ 3 is such a disappointment. First you cities will riot by the time they get a population of 8, or sometimes as early as 5. This will cause you to stop production and deal with it. The worse is no matter if you have a temple or not, they wil riot because "its too crowded." I once had the misfortune to build my capitial near a flood plain. Well ever turn my citzens would die of disease and then would be replaced by the newly born. Therefore always making me lose my performs and keeping my capital in a state of muntiny.

Jungles and forests are everywhere and it will take you until the 1800s to clear them all out. It takes forever to do anything (even when changing the rules in the editor) and the game becomes mired by the fact that your cities become some crowded they riot and you can't "release the pressure" because you're still clearing all the jungles off your land. Therefore the only thing you can rule is a nation of complainers.

Another thing they ruined is the chance to have a "custom civilzation" as in the first two installments. To change the name of your people and your ruler you most use the editor. Thereby, increasing the chances you will create a bug that will cause your game to crash. I once suffered through 20 game crashes until I finally realized you can't change the name of your custom unit. Customizable indeed.

The game combat system is worse than ever. I sent twenty swordsmen against a single spearman in a city and lost all but four of them. My iron clad was sunk by a ancient boat made from reeds and it goes on and on and on. You have to work about fifty times as hard as the early verisons to do the same thing. It is frustrating to watch your elite Horseman to be wiped out by a conscripted warrior. The game cheats in favor of the computer even on the easiest level.

The "wonder movies" have been removed in exchange for a single frame of art. Other civs will not trade with you unless they are really "giving you the royal screw job." Did I mention the game cheats? Well let me tell you, you will hate the computer. You will develop "Tourette's Syndrome" because of some of the combat.

I sold my game back to the store I bought it from. I suggest you stick with the second verison which is completely superior to the tripe called Civ 3.

Summary: Civilization 2++
Review: After a long period of waiting, I finally got a brand new copy of Civilization 3. Being a big fan of Civilization 2, I was very eager to find out how Sid Meyer will repeat his past success. Well, after playing a few games I can't say I wasn't disappointed - AT FIRST. But then I changed my mind. The problem? the game doesn't feel like a new game, just like a slightly improved version of Civilization 2 - and with much better graphics. Ironically, the movies from Civilization were taken out of Civilization 3! I guess to save CD space?!
However, the more I played this game, the more I realized that yes, this isn't a new game, but still it is a much better version of the old game. So many of the annoying things in Civilization 2 were taken out. For example, now there is a distinction between settlers and workers. Workers improve roads, make irrigation, while settlers start cities. In addition, there is no need to spend all your time worrying about making all these improvents - there is AI to guide this workers, so you could spend time doing what you LIKE in the game. Naturally, you can always turn this feature off. I did like some of the new features, such as cultural conquest - if your culture is strong enough, enemy cities will simply rebel and join your side. And the AI controlling the other players feels much improved over the previous game. The bad thing, Civilization 3 is much slower. It took me *forever* to finish each of my games.
To summarize: the game is similar to the previous game - just better. So, if you like Civilization 2 - and have realistic expectations - you'll enjoy this game. But if you expect something totally new, skip it.

Summary: 5 Stars Only Because It's Civ....But.....
Review: .....it only gets 5 stars because it's a Civilization game and better than 99.9% of what's on the market in all genres. However, it's kind of a let down. I was expecting improvements over the Call to Power games being that Sid was back. But the only improvements are slightly better graphics and better diplomacy. While the Call to Power games had interface problems, they were so much deeper than this (colonization of the sea, more units, etc.). Civ III cuts units from CTP like the slaver, lawyer, corporate branch, etc. I came to like those specialty units. Whil Civ III doesn't expand or even keep the depth of Call to Power I & II, it is still one of the best strategy games released this year. Though, Call to Power II was overall a better game.
