Summary: Expectations blown away.
Review: Like many, when I first heard of Far Cry I was amazed by the technology behind it. Also like many, upon release I wasn't expecting the actual game to be this good. Far Cry's beauty is not skin deep, alng with its bleeding edge graphics there is also an astounding Single Player experience to be had. In an age when 10 or less hours of gameplay is becoming a trend in video games, it's nice to see a single player campaign that is easily over 20 hours -- not just that, none of it is filler!
With Far Cry, you are getting the most advanced graphics technology available in a game, as well as a superb single player. It's multiplayer could be seen as weakness, as it is not fully fleshed out. This however can be either (a) improved by the developer through a patch or (b) improved by modmakers using the steller mod tools. There is no losing in purchasing Far Cry, and no reason why you shouldn't.

Summary: finally a real first person shooter
Review: The first attention grabber is the supreme graphics. The laws of physics actually apply to this game. Even the water looks great. Hopefully the developers can make the image refract in the water for future games. The jungle is perfect for this game. Not beig bounded by walls allows the player to play his own style and develop his own tactics. I'm impressed with the way the AI attack and defend. It's almost like they have their own personalities. Far Cry is the game for first person shooter fans! My only concern is that people new to this type of game might get a little lost without having their hands held through the game. Time will help that, and experienced players will have the time of their lives playing in these conditions. The strategy and realism involved has taken first person shooters to another level.

Summary: Finally...something NEW!!!!
Review: OK...this is definitely been there, done that but I was very happy about 3 things. I won't get into more than these 3 because the other positive reviews have said it all.

1 - I AM OUTSIDE!!! Thank the gods of gaming! I am so sick of playing in dungeons, burned out space stations. Also if I have to kill one more Nazi or alien in a game, I am going to go kill some programmers myself! The outside world of FARCRY is awesome. I felt like playing in the water and exploring everything. Nice, bright, tropical, birds, water, sunshine, sand, boats to drive, jeeps to wreck. It is all here finally!

2 - The AI is awesome. The AI is also very stupid at times. Not a good as UT 2004...not even close but atleast realistic. Some humans would be busy looking in other directions, talking, fixing things. This makes it very realistic. Stir them up and they will swarm you like yellow jackets would! Woo Hoo!!!!

3 - Finally, I was glad to see a good first shooter with a fun and somewhat creative selection of weapons. Silenced guns, grenade launchers, rifles...the whole enchilada! I was disappointed that the tear gas grenades basically did nothing to stop the enemies though. Oh well.

In summation let me quote Homer Simpson - Mmmmmmmm FARCRY..............

Summary: Excellent Game - Still Holding Out for the 64 Bit Version.
Review: Fun and exciting, this game will likely keep your interest if you're an FPS fan. Graphics are excellent (I'm running and AMD FX-51 with a 256MB ATI Radeon 9800 XT and 2GB RAM). The game is difficult on anything but the easy setting but has yet to become tedious for me.

Summary: Stellar FPS
Review: Well so far I can say that Farcry is a great game, from its sprawling jungle environments to the cramped and dimly lit indoor levels. Farcry flashes out a lot of pizzaz not just in the graphics, but also in the sound and enemy AI as well. The first couple of levels it wasn't very noticeable, but as I progressed further into the game the AI became a lot more aggressive (and smart). At times you'll be taking pot shots at the enemies in the distance only for another to come and mow you down from behind or from some other angle that you failed to cover. The game is filled with many tense moments like when you're hanging by a thread of life and suddenly more reinforcements rappel from a helicopter to add extra tension and uneasiness to your efforts.
All this flash and cool stuff does however, come at a pretty high cost as others have mentioned before. At this time I'm able to set all things (water, shadow, texture levels, etc.) to the highest level minus the resolution (2nd highest setting) with a P4 3.0 Gig, 1 Gig of memory, and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB) graphics card. For those with lower end computers this game is NOT recommended because I was using the same setup except with half the memory and a pretty outdated FX 5200 card (128 MB) and I had to set everything to the lowest settings in order for this game to function.
In closing, for those of you that have pretty high-end systems this game is highly recommended as it is one of the best FPS that I've ever played. For those with lower end systems this game is NOT recommended though as mentioned before due to the sheer amount of power needed to get this game going. Overall a solid game that will easily hold you over until Doom 3 and Half-life 2 come out. Happy hunting <><

Summary: Farcry - Who Needs Half Life 2?
Review: After eons of waiting for Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Halo 2, I can say that Farcry has stepped up to the plate and now occupies the higher eschelon that these other great FPS titles have already reached. Farcry is an excellent game. I downloaded the demo a few days ago and immediatley rushed out and purchased the complete game after I had gotten to the end of the demo.

Your adversaries are excellent, the A.I. for them is unpredictable. The game gives you plenty of standard and unique weapons to stifle their unpredicability. The rocket launcher is a favorite of mine.

The environment in the game is superb. The water looks excellent and the outdoor scenery is incredible. The distance shots in the game are breathtaking. This game also gives me a reason to purchase some needed upgrades to my machine. I'm running on medium quality. I thought I had a workhorse but I guess it needs to be enhanced.

Vehicles in this game have a sort of weight to them, the supply truck lumbers, while the 4 wheel buggy zips and bounces. Firing the vehicle-mounted weapons sounds and looks great.

The mutated apes freak me out. Can't sleep claw-monkey Treligents will eat me! I love this game. Get Farcry now!

Summary: Excellent DX9 Game
Review: I will preface this review by saying this game is cutting-edge, and therefore you probably need a solid DX9 card to enjoy it fully. To the reviewer with a 5200 FX, the problem isn't the game, it is your video card.

For those of you with a broadband connection, download the demo and see for yourself (though the demo doesn't do the full game justice). Incredible graphics. Great gameplay. Plenty of weapons. Few software or compatibility problems for me. Sufficient game length and decent replay value (just because it's so fun). Mulitplayer seems fairly solid, but the single player is the reason to buy.

Highly recommend for the gaming enthusiast with a solid video card. For those with older or cheaper cards, I would try the demo first. Great FPS. Highly recommended.

Summary: Watch out Half-Life2 and Doom3!
Review: UPDATED REVIEW

With all the big name titles and sequels coming out this year, it would seem hard for any other game to make its mark this year. Well, all I can say is Far Cry has done that and more.

Far Cry game raises the bar for graphics, AI, and open ended play. I read some initial reviews that were mixed, but all I can say is this game is fun.

You can play the game however you want. You are very rarely channelized into going down one corridor or to one unlocked door like some many other games. I love the ability to pick your own avenue of attack.

The graphics are amazing and with playable frame rates on most computers. The water effects and vegetation are the best I have seen to date. At least on my comp. You won't need a $400 graphics card to get 50+ fps compared to some of the other recent action games.

The sound and music keep you in the mood throughout the game. This is something that is often overlooked.

The AI is some of the best I have seen, ever. If you alert the enemy, they keep coming and coming until they find you, you kill them all, or they kill you. This adds a whole level of excitement to the game.

The difficulty levels really make a difference, so adjust the game to your skill level and go wild.

I have seen the demo's for HL2 and Doom3, and I think Far Cry is going to be this years sleeper for Game of the Year. Similar to how Half-Life did it 6 years ago. I can just imagine how some Mods are going to be for this game.

The storyline is decent and sets up for sequels in the coming years. It could have been a little deeper, and the game could have been a little longer but it was already on 5 CD's, so I guess they had to limit it somehow.

BOTTOM LINE:
This game is worth every penny! So if you like First Person Shooters and Action games, this is a definite buy.

If you are unsure, just download the Demo and check it out. Just remember the real game looks better and plays smoother than the demo.

//// UPDATE ////
Also, I have seen alot of complaints about the save system. Well, if you don't like the checkpoints, just manually save your games like this:

To save a game anywhere, open the console (press ~) and type "\save_game gamename" (without quotes) where the gamename can be any name or number you like. For example:

\Save_game Quicksave

Enjoy!

Summary: A landmark first-person shooter
Review: FAR CRY
*****
"A landmark first-person shooter"
While the gaming world is eagerly awaiting HALF-LIFE 2 and DOOM 3, the two guaranteed best-sellers in the coming months, it has just witnessed a landmark first-person action game that is sure to become one of the best games of the year. Made by a German developer called Crytek, FAR CRY offers single-player action that is packed with excitement and ingenuity. Even with the lack of a save-game feature (the game auto-saves for you occasionally), the superb level design, strong AI, the detailed and realistic graphics, and the perfect combination of stealth and action make FAR CRY the best actioner since DEUS EX and HALF-LIFE.

The story is just an obligatory pretext for the gameplay -- mad scientists, ruthless fighters and mercenaries, scientific experiments gone awry, and a tropical paradise becoming a living hell -- the kind of storyline that any casual sci-fi fan should be intimately familiar with, right down to the surprising villain at the end. Much of the action takes place in a sunny tropical archipelago. You play an ordinary guy named Jack Carver who is trapped on the islands and must fight his way out, with occasional help from two people, a scientist working on the islands and your female companion, Val, who is abducted at the start of the game.

The first striking thing about FAR CRY is its immensely large exterior locations. Each map spans up to 1.2 km (3/4 mile), according to the designer, and much of it is accessible, from underwater to mountain tops, from one end of the map to the other. The large exterior is also highly detailed, notably the jungle, the foliage, the tall grass, right down to the insects and birds. And the water is the most realistic-looking I've ever seen. There are many indoor locations as well. Sometimes interior and exterior locations coexist on the same level -- you enter a huge exterior location, then go inside a building, then come back out to the same huge exterior. FAR CRY has the most realistic and detailed game world I've ever seen.

To be sure, you need the latest and fastest PC and video card to see all the details. With my P4 2.4 GHz and aging GeForce4 Ti4200, I have to set graphic details to medium to allow a playable frame rate of 20-40 fps, and that eliminates much of the environmental details, such as grass and insects. Note that FAR CRY is only compatible with GeForce and Radeon video cards (it states so on the box). One can download the playable demo from various sites, such as gamesdomain.com, to test your PC's ability. The demo contains the entire second level of the game. While FAR CRY is a game that is definitely worth upgrading your video card for, those who consider buying a GeForce4 FX or Radeon 9800 may want to wait a few weeks for a new batch of video cards, the NV40 from NVidia and the R420 from ATI.

The game also sounds terrific. It supports quadraphonic (4 speakers), surround (5 speakers), and Dolby 5.1 (6 speakers) setup. EAX (environmental audio effects) is also supported for Creative Audigy sound cards. Basically, EAX is way of making remote audio sounds realistic. For instance, when you eavesdrop someone in another room, his voice sounds a little farther away and also a little muffled or echo-y, depending on the distance and the acoustics of that room. When you are underwater, you hear muffled sound from above the water. Such audio realism helps you determine where the sound comes from.

The single-player portion of the game has one of the best AI I've ever seen. In many ways the enemies are almost as smart as I am. They can sneak up behind you, ambush you, snipe you, hide from you, run for cover, and alert others. I detected no scripted AI, which means enemies don't behave the same way every time. They can spot you from REALLY long distance, the same way you can. Enemies range from the weak mercenaries, the sharp-shooting elite force with shields, to the tough, mutated animals called trigens. Occasionally, you have to shoot down helicopters and other vehicles as well.

Given the strength of the AI, it is often best to surprise your enemies, and the game provides many means for stealthy gameplay. You can use the surroundings to conceal yourself, such as crouching or lying prone behind bushes or tall grass. You can use binoculars to spot enemies from hundreds of meters away. You can use heat-sensing night-vision goggles to spot enemies (some of them invisible) in dark places. Not to mention, you can engage in long-distance sniping -- and three of the weapons, thankfully, have telescopic view. Refreshingly, the game only allows you to carry four weapons at a time. So, be sure to keep one for sniping.

Of course, you can use brute force as well, especially in the later levels, when you are being hunted and have to engage your enemies head-on. Two of the weapons can fire very damaging rockets and grenades, and they come in handy. Not too surprisingly, these levels are the least interesting, and are unlike the earlier levels where stealth plays a bigger part. With the lack of a save-game feature and a scarcity of health medikits and armor, you have often to die and replay the same level over and over. The last level, in particular, is ridiculously difficult. Interestingly, there are cheat codes available on the Internet that let you freely save your game. That means the save-game feature is there in the game, but the designer chose to not let you use it.

But in spite of it all, the superb design of FAR CRY makes it a strong contender for action game of the year.
