Summary: Not Windows 2000 compatible!
Review: For all of you that have had bugs with this program running, you need to know that it is not compatible with Windows 2000. Furthermore, UBI has not in the past and will not in the future make it's Chessmasters 2000 compatible. You are better off with Fritz.
Others have already mentioned the install problems due to the copy protection of the CDs.

Summary: Guess I got lucky
Review: After seeing all of those 1-star reviews, I felt I had to share my experience. It loaded great on my laptop on the first try...and my laptop has a CD-RW drive. I've been playing it for days, and it's the only game that has pushed 'Civilization III: Conquests' off my monitor for that long in over a year...and it looks like it's gonna stay that way! 8^D I'm using it to teach my 7-year-old, and he loves it, too.

About needing the CD in the drive to run the game...I think that's been true of every PC game I've played for years, so CMX seems pretty typical in that regard.

The 4-stars for overall rating is because I think the documentation explaining the Analysis windows could have been more complete. It doesn't really explain what all of the different ratings mean, or how to interpret them to know exactly how I did in my game. I guess that's a question for the CMX forum at the Ubisoft site, huh?

Just one man's opinion.

Summary: Fascist copy-right protection.
Review: Automatic 1 star for punishing legit owners of the game. This is typical of the BS that UbiSoft has imposed on gamers:

I bought the PC version of Grandia II, which they published, and, although it was extremely buggy, not a single patch was released...

If you absolutely must play a game by Ubi****, I suggesst you not pay for it.

(Note a mes amis Quebecois: UbiSoft est controlé par le Parti Liberal du Quebec. LIBEREZ NOUS DES LIBERAUX!)

Summary: Ignorant Service
Review: I had received two copies of CM10 for XMas. Due to reviews I directly asked UbiSoft for verification. I only have a CD-R/W and a DVD-R/W on my PC. My laptop only has a DVD-R/W drive. The box claims that the software has issues with some drives (failing to state the r/w issue) and some virtual disks. I needed additional information that the UbiSoft representative was unwilling to provide. Will it work on my specific system? Which drives have known issues and which virtual disks?

Unless you are certain you can return this product for a full refund it is not worth the risk installing on a modern PC. I had never heard of Fritz 8, and would never have tried it except for this issue. I traded CM10 for Fritz 8 Deluxe and it is actually very good. My second CM10 I exchanged for a Chess clock. $40 is too much to spend on something that "might" work for me and the only support offering is for me to downgrade my system to a plain CD or DVD drive and remove any conflicting software (Nero) that I also use almost daily.

It's also very sad when users need to educate a companies developers that software copies are made "TO" R/W drives, not "FROM" them. This solution doesn't solve anything but irritate good customers. Bye bye UbiSoft.

Summary: Should have done my homework first!
Review: I should have done my homework first and browse through the reviews before buying this product. Anyway, at the end it was not that bad: I could exchange it for a copy of chessmaster 9, which is running fine in my pc.

As with many, many other people in this forum, this program simply will not run in my pc! I asked the seller and he gave me a weird explanation about the program only running if you have the Professional Edition of Windows XP, which I did not believe!
He also told that he had had lots of complaints about it, which I now believe.

Ok. So at that moment I thought that maybe there was something wrong with my video card or something (I am no computer geek!) but now I see that I am not alone in having problems installing this program.

I would have to echoe some suggestion by an earlier reviewer: buy it only if full refund is guaranteed and I wish you good luck!

Regards,

Summary: Excellent game
Review: I was one of the lucky ones who were able to get this game playing in notime, I was a bit nervous that I would have the same problems as others but I didn't. This is an excellent game. The only reason some people gave it 1 star was due to performance issues.

On to the game, I learned new chess tactics and advanced my knowledge alot, it helped me win my first varsity game. The game comes with 3d glasses and putting the game in 3-d makes the board feel more like a chess board.

I recomend this for rookies, intermediates, and pros.

Summary: Do not purchase
Review: Purchased Chessmaster 10th for 12yr old, installed it Christmas Eve. It actually let me select the players but would never go pass the login screen. I uninstalled and re-installed it twice but it never worked. Waste of time and money!!! Any suggestions for a suitable game? (My 12yr old likes chess but I can't play the game.)

Summary: DO NOT BUY! THIS IS JUNK!
Review: Rarely am I compelled to stop what I am doing and write a review about a product. However, this product is such garbage, that I felt that need.In fact, it should receive no stars.

First, the game can only be used with certain video cards, which is something I did not learn until after I received the product. Specifically, it can only be used with a GeForce 1/2/3/4/FX or an ATI 7500-9000 series graphics processor. Now keep in nind, I meet those specs anway.

Second, you need the 1st CD (of 3) to play the game. Although not normally a problem, if you have an ultraportable or tablet PC, forget about this product.

Third, the installation is over 540mb minimum install. Thats if you do not install anything but just the pure game files.

After installing, I rebooted my Dell 8300 (2gb Ram P4 3.0, 400gb hard drive, ATI Graphics card with 256mb RAM on board). I started the program, and it locked up my computer. Tried again, no luck. Rebooted and tried opening the program, it finally opened. However, all the graphics were off.

Long story short, this game should be taken off the market and the development team put out on the street.

ALL I WANT TO DO IS PLAY CHESS!!!!!! DO NOT BUY! SAVE YOURSELF THE AGGRAVATION!

Summary: Based on the demo version...
Review: The 10th edition of the Chessmaster series looks to be the best yet. Sporting an entirely new (and much easier to use) interface, it should be easier than ever to get a game going against any computer or human opponent. The new edition will also be including a completely redesigned online module, which is supposedly more stable than the one that shipped with CM9000. If the online support is as good as Ubi Soft claims it will be, the CM community should develop into an excellent place to play chess games.

In addition to the usual Chessmaster offerings, the new edition will be featuring a new "Chess Academy" where Josh Waitzkin will review various chess concepts, while Larry Christiansen will review attacking concepts. The newer 3-D chess sets look many, many times more realistic than the old 9000 counterparts. And finally, of course, the King Engine (the brains behind CM) have been updated and improved as well.

Overall, this looks to be an excellent addition to the Chessmaster series and I am looking forward to it.
