Summary: Awsome !
Review: I had windows 98 on my machine which came preloaded with my compaq presario. I had problems in installing win 2000 professional initially cos it wont recognize the product id of existing win98..when i talked to MS support i was told that sometimes the win2k setup doesnt recognize OEM product ids..They gave me a new product id and i tried again and it worked well. I have 160MB memory and 233Mhz cpu...win2k is really faster than i expected. also i found that win2k pro shuts off faster than win nt 4.0 when u shutdown which i somehow like...though setup gave me a message that my printer and modem may not work with old drivers , my modem still worked....i have still to test printer...but everything else works just as fine....great job MS !

Summary: Dissapointed
Review: i upgraded from windows 98 it took about 2 hours on a 40 speed scsi and 450 mhz machine. I had to re install all my drivers, half of which it would not accept, GLSetup would not work so I could not play any decent games like soldier of fortune. Within 4 hours I deleted it and put back on windows 98. It is really good for business and networks, but for home computing I would wait until drivers and programs are avilable that support it.

Summary: Windows 2000 plays just as well...
Review: Don't believe what critics of Windows 2000 say about not being able to play games on it. Indeed, you may have to put that DOS version of Doom away, but newer games should work no problem. Unlike Win9x, plug and play actually works. If this is only a peek of what we might expect from Microsoft in the future, I'm pretty excited. Two thumbs up!

Summary: I tested the BETA, I now bought the Upgrade.
Review: I have been working with PCs since 1990, and have experience in quite a bunch of Operating Systems, including DOS, Windows, MacOS, Linux, Unix and BeOS. But I must say, Windows 2000 is by far the best commercial product avaiable. Linux is too complicated for office use, MacOS requires a very powerful computer, and software titles are rare. Linux is a hype, Microsoft is going to have huge revenues with Windows 2000 Pro.

So wehre are the advantages? I say: Active Directory is a great innovation, and it works perfectly. Windows 2000 is as stable as Linux, but has a lot more to offer. NTFS5 and the new WDM does a lot to make life easier. Both for home and office use.

So, where are the disadvantages? I must admit, the hardware companies have failed to provide drivers, which makes it impossible for many users ot upgrade to Windows 2000, because their hardware won'T work with out that drivers. If you don't have exotic hardware, you will experience no problems at all. IT is working as easy as Windows 98, with the system stability of Windows NT 4.0........

I would buy it.

Summary: Windows 2000 is GREAT !
Review: First of all, Microsoft didn't rush anything with this O.S. It has been built the ground up. Windows 2000 is stable, secure, and user friendly. It also see's FAT32, for all you dual booters out there, I'm sure you'll be pleased. If you are running Win 98, and don't need security or play games. Don't upgrade. Windows 2000 isn't a gaming or multmedia O.S. It's a networking O.S. It's also great with notebooks, alot of different features. Bottom line if you want a multmedia machine, stick with Win 98, and wait for Millenium. That is going to be something totally different than previous win 9x's (pure 32 bit). Otherwise if you want something better for business, security, and reliably. Move from NT to Win 2000. Make sure you check the HCL on Microsoft's Website to verify all your hardware works. Then installation is a breeze, a novic can do it. Hope you enjoy Windows 2000 as much as I have.

Summary: Best desktop OS there is
Review: What can I say? Looking through the other reviews for Win2000 Upgrade, there seems to be a lot of focus on price or comparison to Linux products. I usually find that the people claiming Linux to be "perfect" and so forth are either not running their own business, and therefore have no concept of total cost of ownership, or have very specific needs and highly trained staff. As a developer, I have found Windows 2000 a very valuable asset. I don't use MS development tools - I use Borland ones, but they work flawlessly with Win2000. I can plug in my camera or palm pilot or whatever I need to AND develop at the same time, and very rarely turn my machine off... and the interface for doing the multitasking and plug and play is very simple. There's no reaching for manuals or looking up manual files for cryptic commands.

For users of NT 4.0 Workstation - buy it. don't waste any time! For users of Linux - use a friends version of it, keep an open mind, try to learn a few things about it. You won't be disappointed.

Summary: I upgraded my desktop just fine
Review: I use Windows 2000 on my computer at home. I setup different profiles, for my family members, and by assigning them passwords, they each have a seperate profile, similar to Win98. But they are better protected from each other, The Internet connection sharing works wells, allowing thier Kidputer to access the Internet via my DSl connection. and the system can be set to forbid installs or changes to the basic OS. I like it, and it's worth it.

For Mobile user, check for Video and Sound driver before purchase. My new HP 3270 does not support Win2000 yet, Although everthing works except the built in sound/modem . It needs a driver from ESS & HP.

Summary: Microsoft blows it again
Review: This is the least user friendly piece of software I have everused. Everything about this ( ). It claims that you can in stallit over window 98, but I did and now all of my programs are frought with error messages. It is insanely difficult to arrange programs on the task bar. Next to none of my peripherals work any more. It took 3 days to get back connected to the internet.

Simplicity is the Key to Success. MS has not a clue. But then again, most monopolists are.

Summary: Don't Update
Review: Take my word for it, Don't update your software now. If you are in dire need to spend some money on an operating system, upgrade to Windows 98 V2. Windows 2000 will slow down your computer, and make it so many of your drivers will work with your computer. All I have to say is wait.

Summary: Win 2000 is the best Microsoft OS to date period.
Review: I'm using W2K on my computer now as well as being a computer business owner. I keep up with reveiws from other Techs in the feild on various matters and let me tell you W2K is simply the best. It was infact not rushed and it was rebuilt from the ground up. The hardware support is more limited that win98 but it has much much more support than NT had previously. You can add hardware on the fly and change almost all of the system settings as well. One reveiw here said to wait for Mellenium if your a gamer, that is some what true but dont expect to find anything really new mellenium. I has been my experiance that Mellenium is the same old tried ho hum OS that 98 was to 95. Win98 really should have been an update and not a new OS. If you are looking for new features in an OS then there is another reason to go with W2K.
