Summary: Better than all other consumer editions of Windows!
Review: Windows ME has been fantastic for me. I backed up my Windows 98 data, made doubly sure I had all of my drivers for my hardware, and installation disks for ALL of the programs I used, then went for a fresh install. My system crashes less, runs faster (start up time, in particular, was cut in half!), runs smoother. I recommend it for anyone wanting to improve their system.

The downside: Don't do an upgrade! For this, a fresh install is best. Then again, when was the last time you formatted your hard drive? If you get a new system, make sure it comes with Windows Me. If you have an older system, make sure you back everything up. Make sure you have all of your drivers and installation disks for the programs you use. Yes, it is complicated to upgrade an older system (again, don't just upgrade, do a fresh install!), but if you know a lot about computers, or you know someone who does, you can do it!

Windows ME is as great an upgrade as Windows 98 was to Windows 95, and way better than Windows 98 Second Edition was to Windows 98. But I write this in March of 2001. If it gets too late in the year, you may be better off (much, much better off) waiting for Windows XP which will really blow all our socks off!

Summary: Microsoft Windows Millennium
Review: Out of all Windows OS's I have used, i.e. windows 3.1, windows 95, and windows 98, this is the best one out there. In my opinon, Windows is getting better and better. When I was set to go and buy Windows Me, many people told me that it was having a lot of problems, then they say it is the upgrade. That is what they said about Windows 98 upgrade. I have not had one problem. I has not frozen up, and it seems that it is running faster and more reliable that Windows 98 was. I just have to say that this is a very good OS. I can not say for the upgrade, I got the full version and started over. This is worth the price.

Summary: Total WASTE of money. it ...
Review: Trust me! Stay away from this piece of garbage. If you like system hang ups and blue screens then this is the product for you. Driver incompatabilities and it will not recognize non plug and play devices. It you buy this GOOD LUCK.

Summary: Expert computer users should avoid this like the plauge
Review: If you consider yourself an expert computer user, there is absolutely not a single reason why you should upgrade to Windows Me. First of all, it is merely a point release to Windows 98 -- like a bugfix. Except that they accidentally created hundreds more bugs along the way, so you're still not getting a benefit. Most of the added features are big, bulky gewgaws like Windows Media Player 7, which sports quite possibly the most insipid user interface of any application I've used since 1986, and is impossible to remove once it is installed. Internet Explorer 5.5 is included, except that it's not the _final_ build, so you'll have to go to Microsoft's web site and download an 11 megabyte IE upgrade the instant you install WinMe.

Old-school folks who are into DOS games and apps will find that Windows Me has completely removed the "real mode" DOS startup option, so you are effectively screwed there. You can get creative and make boot disks with some files from Windows 98, but it's ridiculous that this is even necessary. Windows Me is still running on top of a 16-bit DOS operating system; Microsoft is just trying to make their product look better by hiding that fact, to the detriment of us all. No one is helped by the removal of a menu option to boot to real-mode DOS. NO ONE.

Professionals who tinker with Photoshop or other development tools are advised to get Windows 2000. It's incredibly stable. Gamers and novice home users are advised to stick with or obtain Windows 98 Second Edition. There is absolutely no reason to get Windows Me. The new features they added are unreliable, and beyond that there is no difference between WinMe and 98 -- other than the fact that WinMe crashed my system twice as often and took real-mode DOS support away. Real helpful.

Avoid Windows Me like the plague.

Summary: Definitely do a clean install
Review: I, too, took the bait for the latest, greatest version of the home system OS. I have to agree with many here that it's not worth it to just *upgrade* any of the win9x versions. In all my experience of making computers, the best install is always a clean install. Yeah, it takes extra time and, yeah, you actually have to think about things like backups, etc. but, in the end, you'll save so much time and frustration.

I really like the Home Networking and Internet Sharing wizards because we have two PCs and I don't have to even mess with protocols, proxy software, etc. to get both machines linked.

Summary: Absolute Must
Review: This upgrade to Windows 98 is wonderful! I haven't had it crash but once since it was released - windows 98 crashed on my daily without fail - and includes ZIP (integrated) support and many other features. Go and get it today!

Summary: ME or just a money spinner
Review: Windows ME is not what I expected. I wouldn't even give this product a 1 star rating(no other choices). It has crashed my computer so many times since I got the software, I've lost count. It is not worth the money you pay for it. Microsoft should give it away for free. Even then I wouldn't touch it. I'm going to enjoy deleting it when I get Windows 2000.

Summary: Waste of money
Review: Since buying Windows ME when it first came out, I've had to reinstall it several times -- every couple of weeks seems to be the average -- due to crashes and other mishaps.

Also, the automatic update feature doesn't work as well as hoped. I downloaded and installed some updates just fine, but was not able to install certain other updates.

The System Restore function, which is supposed to let you restore your system to a previous point and was a major reason for my move to ME, only worked about a third of the time I had to use it. The other two-thirds of the time, WinME told me that I was unable to restore to the point I wanted.

I'd say, stick with 98, as the new features are only incremental in nature. Or go with Windows 2000, which is what I plan to do very soon.

Summary: Worse than 95!
Review: This program has so many bugs and problems that I can't even begin to list them all. The sound won't work, and the video won't work, because it assigns the wrong IRQs to the cards. When you shut it down, the only way to get any life out of your computer is to unplug it and plug it back in again. I have tons of hard drive, memory, processor speed, and so forth, but Windows hangs up and freezes two or three times a day. I'm buying the Windows 2000 upgrade, just so I can get rid of this turkey! It really should get zero stars, or even minus five stars.

Summary: blows
Review: just got windows me. It is the worst o/s I have ever seen. It crash's 10 times more then windows 98 and if you work at home and have windows 2000 and like to make the computer a twin boot it won't work well with it. Just don't buy it.
