Summary: Slow but steady.
Review: So far, I'm impressed with 2000's stability, although it is EXTREMELY slow. I am running it on a GHZ Athlon with 655MBpc133 so it's kinda strange that it runs so slow. I am slowly learning about the various tools that it comes with, and most of it is reletively intuitive.
I am slightly puzzled by a few features, but tutorials online are easy to find.
Personally, I am impressed by the framerate that I get in benchmarking utilities, if not in the OS.

All in all, If you are in need of an overly expensive operating system that WILL NOT DIE, It's great. Otherwise, avoid it like the plauge.

Summary: a stable os, no blue screens, really works
Review: all of the above, and more, has a higher learning curve then all other windows, but is more stable, faster, no blue screens, no lock ups. just a better os all around

Summary: What a great OS!
Review: I upgraded to this from Windows 98, and I never had experience running a server before. From the moment I put in the CD I knew I would love this OS. It is very easy to use, and within a day I had a http and ftp server running perfectly (I had no experence setting them up before). This OS is also much more stable than Win 95/98/ME. It has only crashed on me a few times in 4 months! The only bad thing about this OS is that it can not run any DOS program, so this is not the ideal OS for old skool gamers. All in all this OS is definetly worth the price.

Summary: A royal pain to upgrade
Review: I recently purchased a new computer which came with Windows 2000 Professional. I was very pleased with the operating system which is definitely more stable than Windows 98, which I used on my other computers. So, I purchased the Windows 2000 Pro upgrade to upgrade the remainder of my computers.

Agony.

The biggest problem with the upgrade was backwards compatibility. Windows 2000 did not have a driver for any of my peripherals. It did not install drivers for my printer, my scanner, my video card, my tape drive, my modem or my SCSI controller. In short, nothing but the computer worked. I had to use another computer to download a driver for my modem to start the process. Once I had my modem running, I had to search the web to download and install drivers for each of my peripherals one at a time.

But wait, there's more. Not only was it not compatible with the hardware, but also with much of the software on which I constantly rely. This meant that I had to search the web for patches and upgrades for many of my applications.

The upgrade for one computer took two days. That was about an hour to upgrade Windows and about 10-12 hours of finding and downloading drivers and patches. The process was shorter for subsequent computers because I already had the downloads.

After having endured this torment, I would have to say that with Windows XP so close at hand, I would recommend that you wait before upgrading. I don't know if XP will have the same backwards compatibility issues, but if it does, it makes sense to only go through this torture once instead of twice.

Summary: Unreliable operating system - I have lost all my data.....
Review: I have upgraded my laptop's operating system from win 98 to win proffesional 2000. Herewith is my expereince:

- I agree that win 2000 is probably more stable that win 98. However when my laptop crash using win 2000, I am trying to reboot it again, but I can not enter to my system because win 2000 gives the following messages: " CLIENT1 domain is not available...." Since I used my lapton only as stand alone and not configure with other domain, I can absolutely enter my laptop again either using username administrator or others usernames (I assume that the file that containthis domain definition is corrupted when my lapton is crashing. Sadly, I must reformatted the whole hardisk!!!! BE CAREFUL WITH LOST of DATA, since if win 2000 is crashing and cannot enter again to the previous state, you will get a very nasty expererience - Confusing and unreliable support services. Trying to contact the support services, I faces with several procedures such as passportid, paid service ...etc, etc - Compatibility problems. When upgrading from win 98 to win 2000, I experienced many software and hardware compatibility issues.

Summary: Great, Reliable Operating System.
Review: I have been using Win2k for two weeks now and haven't had any major problems at all. The system runs just fine, but make sure you have a lot of memory I'm currently running this OS on 32MB, get at least 128MB it will help a lot [trust me]. The only thing that crashes on win2k are applications and not all of them are compliant, it was luck that most of mine were compliant. If you are upgrading make sure your hardware is compliant, because my modem is not compliant with Win2k, I had to write this review from another person's computer. Other nice features are the system restore and the no need for rebooting I went through a lot of that with Win98. There is still one little problem I'm still trying to get over and that's the log on screen I'm trying every way to [get around it] it without ruining the system I guess Microsoft made it by default. But over all the operating system is just the same like Win Me with a touch of Win NT. Try it and don't be afraid, what's the worse that could happen.

Summary: You can upgrade from Win98 to Win2000
Review: I have an older box at home I wanted to set up to work with the WROX book on using J2EE with BEA WLS. It's a PII with 256MB RAM, a 12GB disk, and was running Win98. The Win98 bit was the sticking point - you need NT technology for BEA WLS.

I bought the upgrade, installed, and everything worked, except for the DSL software I was using to connect the box to Mindspring.

A quick call to Mindspring got me a download site for Win2000-compatible Mindspring software, and the box is back up, on the net, and running the WROX examples.

It's a decent upgrade, installed without much of a hitch, and gets me the technology I need to run the WROX stuff.

Summary: Best thing Microsoft has put out
Review: I got my Microsoft Certification in NT 4 and decided I needed to upgrade my certification to Win2K. I have been running this product for a good 8 months. My opinion is that this is simply the best OS product Microsoft has put out for the desktop, and may be the best product MS has put out period (especially when compared against ME). Mind you that some older hardware and software are not fully-compatible with Win2k. However, if you have a newer machine it is a great product to have. It is extremely hard to crash this OS. The basic drawback to it is that some software will not run correctly, but with a little looking, you can generally know ahead of time which titles won't run properly.

Summary: It's OK, but...
Review: The 2000 Pro is NOT for everyone. Games will not run well, older programs will not run well, and the system uses so much memory that you'll have RAM to run FEW things at once.

I setup dual boot and compared both OS very well. 2K is more stable, but 98 SE runs fine if you are not installing and uninstalling programs everyday, or every week, or putting DEMOS to run. If you install and remove programs your registry gets damage and the 98 SE does not run well, and most likely crashes all the time.

I'll remain with 98 SE.

Summary: Unstoppable
Review: I do suggest you definently upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional. Since I've installed it 3 months ago I've actually only had one system crash, and I just simply rebooted and in about a minute I was back in full effect. Although you can simply put the cd in and upgrade from Win98 or ME, I do suggest you reformat or fdisk your hard drive for a smoother transition to Win2000. The only problems I've had with it are I had to get a new video card, my VooDoo 3 wouldn't play 3d games with it, it would only display 2d applications, and it was too hard to get good drivers for it with 3Dfx being bought out by nvidia and all. Also sometimes cheaper software wont run on Win2000 'cause its based on NT technology and the software thinks your actually trying to run it on Windows NT. But I've only had that happen once. So again, go, buy, upgrade, hurry.
