Summary: I wish I'd never upgraded
Review: I upgraded to Windows XP after hearing the marketing hype that this OS was faster (increases your computer's efficiency by 40%?), less prone to error and random crashing, and had exciting enhancements like slideshows for My Images and a new & improved windows media player.I upgraded expecting to be impressed, and thus far, have been nothing but disappointed. *Half my hardware doesn't work now because it isn't compatible with XP
*If anything, I think XP has slowed down my system's performance
*I seem to get just as many errors as with 98
AND
*The UI has been over-simplified. Little contextual help bubbles pop up seemingly randomly, and (as of yet) I haven't been able to turn them off. One of these 'help' windows always appears on the start menu, BLOCKING the link to log off. The slide show functionality is cool, but not worth the loss of my DVD player performance (for some reason, now that I've upgraded I can't watch DVDs because quality is so poor, even though I was forced to purchase a (dollar amount) decoder just to make my player work with XP!!)

Summary: Hardware incompatibility
Review: MS win XP and win 2000 are known to cause hardware and software incompatibilty problems. So do not upgrade. Wait until your hardware and software is obsolete. Upgrading to new MSFT products is always a problem. SOme modems and CD recorders will become unusable at all with WIN XP and WIN 2000

Review: though you will need around 128 megs of memory to run xp smoothly, it'll run like a breeze on 256. if you have the money, this is THE software purchase to get. this could very well be the product that makes microsoft the good guys again. been running it since the day it was released, non-stop, to test out it's crash-resistability. so far, no fatal crashes, no blue-screens, nothing. thanks MS, for creating the best OS ever!

Summary: XP Stinks
Review: Don't waste your money. I upgraded from ME to XP and ended up having to Format and reinstall ME. I won't waste any more time reviewing a product that shouldn't be on the market.

Summary: An Improvement Over Windows Me
Review: Bought this as I was getting tired of the same old look of Windows since 1995. This is the most visually appealing windows ever. It makes Windows 3.11 from the early 90's seem prehistoric! The colors and icons are bright and colorful. Buy Windows xp Plus for some more exciting screen savers and games.
The operating system is stable and has never crashed in the three weeks I've owned it. I hibernate it and when I had Windows Me it would always freeze on me. Has not happened with this system. One thing I don't understand is that I cannot encrypt files like I used to be able to with Windows Me. I don't understand why but that is one of my complaints.
Another complaint would be that some things are incompatible. I couldn't burn a CD until I went to Adaptec website and downloaded a newer version which I have 90 free days and then have to shell out some more cash for it. Also, music match had to be updated. My Umax scanner won't work and went to Umax website and they still haven't put an update driver for xp.
Other than those complaints I'm very excited to say I really like this update.

Summary: Windows XP is Stable and Exciting
Review: I recommend Windows XP for the casual as well as serious PC inthusiast. It is More Stable, Secure, and Exciting to use than any previous version of Windows. It is well worth the money if you do your homework first. I advise downloading Microsofts System Advisor before leaping into this one. By doing this you can save alot of grief in making sure your system is compatable or not without loosing a single dime of your money! Gamer's will love this version of Windows due to the fact programs may be run in Compatibility mode which, in most cases, will allow proper operation. Hey, even the clock gets updated by an internet atomic clock automatically once a week while online.
If you don't like the new XP display then use the classic mode.
For me, (using a well known High Speed Cable Internet Provider)setup was all taken care of by XP with almost no user input during intitial load. If you are a cremugion who does not like a beautiful high tech OS then stay away from this one!

Summary: Too many legacy software problems. XP fails to work.
Review: I run a small company. I thought XP PRO would be a boon to our bottom line. What I found is that many legacy software applications failed to work properly with XP Pro. For the systems we upgraded we found you could not uninstall XP and go back to the previous OS. XP changes too much. Each PC or workstation had to be reloaded from scracth. Very time consuming and costly. Because of this, our next major upgrade will be to move away from the Microsoft platform. Most likely Linux Redhat or Unix.

Summary: Fine graphics at cost of memory.
Review: Windows xp is a pc version of the new MAC OS. It seems that the Windows organization of their OS is getting better. But, if your machine doesn't have at least a 700+ MHZ CPU w/ close to 256 of RAM...your machine is going to be slow.... I have a 633 w/ 128 and it is alright but often slow.... I am upgrading to 512MB to be solid. Tried to install it on my laptop 450mhz w/96 of RAM, it is extremely slow and always locks up. I am going to un-install it from the laptop back to 98SE. If you are a home user that like lots o' graphics and pretty stuff, buy XP. If you don't care about graphics and like to constantly mess with your setting/install/unistall programs and networks.... win 2000 is the way to go.. Definitely seems better than ME though... But, you need to seriously think about your MHZ and memory....

Summary: Best OS ever
Review: Microsoft has pulled off a wonderful operating system with XP.
Having been an NT/2000 user for the last couple of years, I was very disappointed with the copy of Windows ME that came on my Pentium 4. ME could just not handle the memory requirements of the software I run. (Photoshop, Frontpage, etc...)
I have been using the preview version of XP for about 3 months and just bought the full version (professional).
I am running a P4 1.3 with 384 Mb of RAM and it screams. XP has not crashed once, nor has it run low on resources. The new look is great but if you don't like it, you can turn it off and go back to the old look. Cleartype is a very cool new feature, much easier on the eyes. Everything is much more accessible for newbies but is also very easy to get into for the guts for experienced users. Oh yea, you can roll back driver installs, how cool is that?
If you are running any type of programs that require a lot of system resources then you will want to upgrade to XP ASAP. Its well worth it.

Summary: Can you say "CRASH" and "INCOMPATIBILITY"
Review: I must say that I stay up with the latest drivers and peripherals and it just about brought my machine to its knees. My printer still doesn't work and I have had to invest $250 to get my PC back up and running just to handle basic functions for now. As with all Microsoft products, wait a little while before you tackle this OS. You would be best advised to let all of us suckers help Microsoft fix the many BUGS in this software. You would have thought that Microsoft would have learned something about stable software releases and the need to test the most basic and popular drivers. And stability....my machine crashes more now than it did on ME. Good luck!
