Summary: Finally some stability
Review: I first installed the upgrade just as soon as I recieved it and had compatability problems.So then I reformatted my hard drive and installed Win98SE and then immediately upgraded to XP.Then I went to the net and got all of the latest drivers for my hardware and it has been trouble free since.Now I couldn't think of going back to 98 or ME.I love it especially the stability.

Review: The operating system is good. Much better than 95, 98 and 2000.
The main problem I have with Microsoft XP is that if you have multiple system - you need to have a software license. Each additional PC requires a license. Maybe, I will switch over to linux OS.

Summary: Windows XP- Better than Me, but what isn't..
Review: It seems every now and again, Microsoft needs more money, so it puts out a new OS. While XP may have it's strong points, decent looking, start menu is better, it really isn't a "must have". For anyone who is doing just fine with what ever you have, there is no reason to get this. Other than to waste money, that is. Yet, if your looking for a little bit more, and have some spare $$$, then this is for you. XP should be called Windows Starter, as this is really best for people who don't know too much about computers. If this decribes you, then XP is your new friend. You will probably be able to do things, you don't know how to before. Wizards and a better help center can guide you through all most all the problems you might face. Plus, as AOL would say, it is very simple to use. So once you get past that activation nonsense, you feel right at home with this update.

Review: If you want an os with an X get a mac and stop whinging. OS X.1 rules. I do own a PC with win2K and it runs great so dont call me bias. Pi is exactly 3!!!!

Summary: Major disappointment. Buy Windows 2000 Pro if you must
Review: I was happily using Win2K on my home machine, when I was lured by the glitter of XP. Big mistake. Everything was fine in my Win2K world - performance, compatibility, stability ... but I was lured by the promise of integrated picture, audio and video utilities and the fancy new user interface. <Sigh>. And then I actually installed XP ... my video capture card no longer works, my 700MHz/30GB/256MB RAM machine now feels dog slow, advanced printer functions are gone until a new driver comes out, had 2 crashes during installation, the integrated apps for pictures, audio and video are not as good as the free-ware I can download and so on ... If you really must upgrade from 95/98/Me, I recommend going with Win2K Pro - at least for another year while XP "matures".

Summary: Most of my problems have been resolved...
Review: Since I wrote the following review**, most of my problems have been fixed with the help of local computer experts. I still had to install another word processing program, but most of the rest of my problems were either user error (I must admit) or I had to be walked through the correction process with someone who knows much more than I do. The help screens were pretty much useless, but my system is up and running now. I upgraded the program from 1 star to 4. I just felt like I needed to change my review. Thanks! ** I had a local computer company install XP on my computer when I needed some repair work done. I thought I was doing a good thing to upgrade my computer. Oops! That was a mistake! As others have related in their posts, my sound isn't working at all. My Windows 98 imbedded Microsoft Works program won't work at all and needs to be reinstalled, which I am going to have to pay for. When I switch between explorer and outlook express, my internet connection is broken and I have to continually reconnect. Also, the writing on my screen is small, fuzzy, and looks like it needs to be focused. I don't mind the XP program itself, but I sure don't appreciate all the extra money I'm going to have to shell out to fix the problems I'm having. Before you decide to upgrade to XP, you'd better find out about the availability of your current programs (or lack thereof) when all is said and done. I hope you have better luck than I.

Summary: Windows XP is Wonderful
Review: Windows XP was super simple to install. Now, that I've installed it, my computer hasn't crashed once. The added multi-media features make this OS better than any Windows in the past. It starts so much faster, and has a lot of features that make the system easier to use. You could not pay me to go back to 98.

Review: Win XP can only satisfy the new-aged computers and hardware out in the market right now, or soon to be out in the market. For those people that give Win Xp a one star, I guess you're not ready for "change" quite yet.

Summary: Expensive and NOT hassle free
Review: Welll I received xp pro as a gift. Problem was they purchased the full version not the upgrade. After reading all the negative reviews and what not I decided let me ask microsoft if using the full version would cause bugs. It's labeled for new puters only right? Well they would be more than happy to answer my question ... unless I register it first. So I need to give them the product number and lose any chance I might have on a refund or pay ... to answer that question. Can I use the full version. Because my manufacturer has posted one thing and Microsoft another. Not even going to play the tag game with microsoft nor will I pay ... for the answer. I will send it back to my friend thank her for the gift and explain the option I had and why. It's embarassing for me and the person giving the gift. But at least I know not to invest any large amount of money into microsft software if it's not already on the puter I bought. don't waste your money I have seen nothing but negative reviews every where.

Summary: Better than expected. Not what it should be.
Review: While XP is as good an operating system as Microsoft has ever produced, it is not the sort of offering that the world really needs. It seems that with 90+% market share, the company could actually do something more remarkable than dress up their standard offering with pretty screens and potentially disruptive security features. I understand that as a public company that serves a number of different markets, they have an obligation to their shareholders and to their customers. And well, they do their shareholders a great service with this product. I'm just less sanguine about what they do for their customers. Sure, by replacing the shaky code on which 95, 98, and Me are based, Microsoft has actually improved computing for the many users who must (and many of us MUST, thanks to the shrinking resources of IT departments, and the shrinking helpfulness of help desks) use Windows. That said, if there's anyway you can avoid it, then try something a bit more elegant: the biggest improvements in operating systems still come thanks to open source projects based in Unix. For most users, I'd put the power and experience of OS X or a linux flavor up against this anyday. Good luck.
