Summary: Amazing!
Review: The best Windows ever! Combing the rock solid stability of Windows 2000 with the Home & Multimedia Features of Windows Me! That's what I've been waiting for!
A must have!

Summary: Windows XP is by far the best OS Microsoft has ever released
Review: Windows XP, the latest edition of Microsoft's cash cow, is actually very good. Finally, Microsoft has taken the old Windows 9x series, removed the crashes, added security, and done what they should have done a long time ago, release a truly great OS. Finally consumers will be able to enjoy the NT stability, but with an OS that is unparalleled in terms of usability. Great job MS!

Summary: A must have for everyone!
Review: This new operating system is simply a must have for everyone (especially those running Win ME). I've had every Microsoft operating system and each one has it's huge downfalls. I wasn't planning on getting another new piece of junk from Microsoft when I heard them once again promise no crashes. Not to mention they want a ton of money for this upgrade. But a friend gave me a copy of the second release candidate which is almost the same exact thing as the full version, and I'm pre-ordering XP today. If you meet the system requirements (and hopefully you're somewhere above), your computer will actually speed up with this upgrade!! And there are so many new features and improved ones (such as hibernate which never worked for in in Win ME). So I say, if you can afford it, go pre-order the upgrade now! Also, you probably don't need to get the professional version unless you really use a lot of big business tools. An no, I am not being paid - although it does seem like it:)

Summary: XP - stability of win2k with a lot more features
Review: Windows XP is pretty impressive. It has the stability of Win2k, but with a lot more features, which in turn actually make it more stable in some ways then win2k. The only reason I havent given XP 5 stars is just because there's always room for improvement, and we dont want micorsoft to stop improving their operating systems :) I would say XP deserves 4.8 stars.

Its a lot harder to do something to your system that would corrupt it. But if you do, they've included an automatic backup system that can save you the trouble of having to figure out what went wrong. Just restore the last automated backup, and you should be up and running again. Or if you know what went wrong, you can roll back a fault driver to the previous one instead of restoring a full backup.

The start menu has been redone to make it easier to find the items you use the most. And best of all, if you dont want to use new start menu, they have given you the option to keep the win98/win2k look and feel.

The built in remote desktop feature is REALLY nice. You can get COMPLETE access to your machine, from any web browser. But it still gives you full NTFS permissions while doing so. You can also use a feature of the remote desktop to request support. This way someone not even in the same time zone as you can work directly on your PC, all while you watch.

And for additional security, there is now a built in firewall, which you can configure or turn on or off.

They've also built it a lot of other nice little features, such as being able to play DVD's from within media player if you want to. Being able to burn cd-r's directly without any additional software. They also support cd-rw's.

Digital cameras are even easier to use now. Just plug them in, and XP recognizes the camera and pops open an easy to use wizard to download the images off the camera. Or you can browse the images right in windows explorer.

They have helped remove the clutter on the task bar by grouping similar task bar buttons, but still giving you control over it.

Compatibility with older programs is less of a problem, since you can install or run programs in win95/98, winme, winnt or win2k mode.

I've installed it on my desktop machine and my laptop, and everything worked right out of the box. I didnt have to download a single additional driver to get any of the standard hardware to work. This is much better then my experience with win2k, which required me to download a host of drivers to get everything working correctly.

Over all, I would say microsoft has taken an existing stable operating system (win2k) and improved it further by making it much more user friendly, and easier to operate.

Summary: Excellent, but lack of 3rd party hardware support will hurt.
Review: Finally Microsoft has migrated everything to the NT/2000 platform. The result is a very fast, very stable OS with all the bells and whistles of ME. New interface is slick, but not yet very customizable color wise. Still a lot of old school windows gray.
Big problem right now is the lack of 3rd party hardware support. Hopefully this will be rectified before final release in October. When that problem is solved, it will definitely be a significant upgrade to current versions.

Summary: WinXP Outright winner
Review: I have been running Windows on my machines since 3.11 and when i first installed my copy of Windows XP RC2 i was very impressed. Unlike the previous OS's, Win 95/98/NT/2000, Windows XP's design has changed for the best, If you have never used windows, Windows XP is right for you because it has the most simple and easy to understand wizards. Have other people using your computer? XP is there again working for with The Fastest User switching you have ever seen!
Another feature is the System Restore Feature first seen with Windows ME, Now can do a Driver Rollback.
Windows XP also supports over 15,000 devices out of the Box.
Windows XP is The Fastest Windows OS and is should be with the High System Requirements, I would recommend using a Pentium 3 500MHz or higher with 256MB of RAM minimum you should use should be around 128MB
Windows XP Home Edtion gets my Thumbs Up!

Summary: Is it really worth it?
Review: Note: This review was based on pre-release copies of Windows XP Professional Edition.

Microsoft has compiled its latest version of Windows with stunning stability and features. However, it's overpriced for the new features.

Pros: Most stable version ever. In 2 months of use, I experienced only 2 applications freezing, and those two were designed for Windows 95. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del no longer brings up the famous Close Program box from Windows 98, etc., rather, the Task Manager. From here, you can shut down any applications that might have frozen, close background processes, monitor your CPU and other performance stats, view network status, and log off or disconnect other users. You can also Shutdown, standby, restart, hibernate, log off, or switch users from this manager. Any programs that have frozen can be closed without going to this manager, simply by clicking the red X that replaces the close program button on window title bars.

A new taskbar- you can now lock the taskbar, so you don't accidently move or resize it. If it's at least 2 lengths high, the date/time expands to the format: Time/Day/Date. Idle system tray icons are automatically hidden, saving desktop clutter. They can be viewed by clicking a small arrow button. The Start menu is revramped- internet and e-mail are first on the list. under that is a list of recently used programs. You can access My computer, my pictures, my music, Network places, Control panel, etc. from the right side. All other installed programs are under More Programs. It also highlights newly installed programs to make them easier to locate.

Networking is EXTREMELY easy. A few simple clicks, and our home network was set up on all computers, even those running Windows 95.

Integration with .NET Passports. Easy access to MSN Messenger and Hotmail.

Windows Media Player 8 and IE 6 make multimedia easier, expecially with DVD integration in WMP8.

More applications, such as Movie Maker, Pinball, Spider Solitaire, etc. included.

Rounded corners on the windows so your mouse pointer won't suffer any more hideous skewings on those sharp corners.

Cons- Although speed might have improved since the release of this beta, installation is slow, and the time remaining estimate is inaccurate. Estimated at 2 hr, took nearly 4.

Uses a lot of system resources... installation took more than 1 gb of space, including the "Restore to previous operating system files".

Older printers, so far, do not have supporting drivers.

System Restore feature requires a lot of disk space.

If you choose to hibernate your computer, you will need an amount of free disk space equal to the amount of installed RAM.

Windows Activation required.

So, if you ask me, I wouldn't purchase Windows XP if your version is stable. Rather, wait until you purchase a new computer. It will come with XP by then.

Summary: Good job microsoft !!!
Review: Ah, windows xp. This is one of the first versions of windows i have actually enjoyed uprgrading to. Every single upgrade: 3.1 to 95 have been painful. The uprgrade from windows 98 to xp is a piece of pie. Normally I reformat my harddrive but not this time. I checked all my software was relatively recently and popped it in my drive. After installing it on a 750mhz PIII/128 mb sdram/ nvidia tnt, it looked great. The colours were clear and sharp and the interface resembles the MSN browser for those who are familiar. Virtually every tool from defrag to scandisk is improved in performance and speed. No more infamous bsd( blue screen of death). DOS as we know it will be lost. The interface at first is basic for a power user like me, but i get used to it. It immediatly builds on you and you love it. I like the new login screen and the control panel. All in all this software is a combination of all that mircosoft learned in the past 15 years.
