Review: I just got this as the O/S on a new Gateway I ordered, it's very NICE!. A fresh new look at Windows! VERY easy to use. I definately approve of the much needed change.

Review: OK i was reading some of the reviews and some of these are outrageous i have been using Xp for a while and have used win95, 98 WinMe Win2000 Pro and Win NT and i can tell you Xp wipes the floor with any Win9x OS and Me and definetely NT I cant say its that far better than Windows 2000 but it is an improvement my bigggest complaing about XP is the lack of 3rd party support but i am sure this will be taken care of when the final product is realeased i like the fact than it has features never seen on any other OS like the compatibilty wizard option whick allows you to make software that was only compatible with win9x or Me compatible with XP and alot more features when it comes to networking its the best i've tried i use @home and have a network setup it autodetected everything without any annoyance i recentlty bought a Gforce3 card and i didnt even notice the installation i just popped in and XP took care of it by itself the only reason i dont give this product a 5 star is beacause of the price and beacause i have seen problems now where it wont detect 56k modems but i am sure this WILL BE FIXED! great OS MS

Summary: Windoes XP is definitely worth having
Review: I installed the preview version of Windows XP and I never yet had a problem with anything running on it. Not once did I have to install any drivers manually and all my hardware is brand new! It is definitely the best and most reliable version of Windows Microsoft came out with. Did I mention how easy it is. My six year old daughter has been using my computer ever since I installed Windows XP. She's a whiz at it already, it is so easy to install new games that she does it herself.

Summary: wireless pro 2011 (Intel) does not work with P4 and win XP
Review: There are no drivers available for Intel wireless Pro 2011 PC card to work with Windows XP prof. I am using a P4 1.6 machine.The system starts with strong signal and then says network unavailable. I upgraded a working networked system with win 98. So, now this machine can't get on the internet or the small in-house network.

Summary: More a product of marketing than a true upgrade
Review: As a network administrator for a large firm using UNIX, Windows 2000 Server, and Windows NT, I have been watching the development of XP for some time. I have used the RC candidates at home and in our network environment in order to better understand how this could influence our networking efficiency, security, and stability. Keep in mind these opinions are based on release candidates, and are therefore not necessarily indicative of behaviors in the official product release. That being said, there are some interesting features I would like to note: 1). Security: nmap, other scanning software, and rudimentary penetration tests performed at our network facility seem to indicate a greater security risk from outside attacks than Windows 2k (both were tested "out-of-the-box"). Once the Internet Connection Firewall was enabled and configured correctly, this greatly reduced the amount of incoming traffic that could be allowed, but the product still failed many of the less-standard port scans. We also logged several interesting outgoing port calls from XP through our OpenBSD/IPFilter firewall, the nature of which we could not determine (most were UDP, but there several port calls to TCP ports < 1024). So, while the built-in firewall does offer more protection than win2k, it is still quite insufficient by itself. NAT seemed to be standard, though port redirects were not possible in either RC. 2). GUI: To put it simply, I am not pleased with the GUI. People have said this operating system is the combination of Mac OS and win2k. Obviously these people are not aware of the underlying architecture of Mac OS (especially the Mac OS X and 10.1 graphics engine), but that's not the issue here. What I dislike about the GUI (besides the design, of course), is it's now harder than ever to probe into what is really going on in the innards of the beast. This latest release has effectively hidden all but the barest of system calls rendering technical support a real nasty affair. No doubt MS technical support will have plenty of KB articles on how to troubleshoot issues hidden behind the new GUI, but that will be some time in coming. 3). Cost: Based on the points above (and many more that are more or less negligible and circumstance-dependent), I would not recommend Windows XP professional over Windows 2000 professional. If it were a free upgrade or of minimal cost, I could see certain IT departments migrating to XP, but overall, the expense of even upgrading a few machines is a hefty price to pay for what looks to be a moderately useful upgrade. In other words, users will not be more productive, more secure, and happier (unless they're fans of the GUI). They will not buy the IT dept. cake or throw a party, and the IT department will not be throwing a party either. At least none of us did. I *would*, however, recommend this product to users of Windows ME (quite the worst OS MS has put out since win3.x), especially if you're fond of ME.

Summary: OK, but not good.
Review: The preview version of XP can be expected to be slightly more unstable than the real version, but even accounting for that windows XP seems to be no better than win2000, and just a squeak ahead of 9x. It inherited all of the NT 4 series driver problems, which have been toned down slightly but I still needed to manually install some hardware instead of using its automatic install feature. Not only that, but the increased complexity of the OS will create hundreds of new holes for hackers unless the user is very security wise. On the other hand, it has a nice user interface. And no matter what it tells you, you don't have to sign up for MS passport.

Summary: Better than windows 2000 but not great!
Review: I have demoed windows XP pro, its way better than any version of windows MS ever released, but it still has it's cons. It's true that it doesn't crash as often as the older versions of Windows;Sometimes when you install drivers for new or old devices that windows was not able to auto-detect, you risk windows rebooting forever to prevent any damage to the OS, but guess what! It will reboot over and over, and even booting into "save mode" doesn't give you the option to uninstall the "devil" driver, so far the only way I am aware of to solve such problem is by reinstalling the OS all over again, since the recovery option still is not able to fix the problem!

Summary: Hmmm... Mac OS X still in the Lead...
Review: Although this OS looks very good, it is still no where near the reliability of the Mac OS X. The new Mac OS has better multimedia and graphic capabilities. Despite what everyone tells you, Macintosh computers DO NOT "stink". They are actually 58% faster than a pentium processor.

Summary: Running for 3 weeks....
Review: and haven't crashed! I am running WinXP Pro RC2 (Pre release) and haven't experienced a crash for three weeks now. When I first installed, had many issues. But, once the kinks are worked out, they stay worked out! And that is better than ANY MS product has ever done. I give 5 stars because it is the best they have made yet!
