Summary: Down with Micro$oft
Review: Redhat 9 gives you the stability and security that Microsoft lacks. You can also split your harddrive, and boot windows along with Linux(why I will never know.) With any open source software there will be some hardware compatibility issues. I recomend that you first try Knoppix, a verson of linuux that only runs on a cd. This way you cat try it out and find any hardware issues. Once you install Redhat, I would recomend going to www.sourceforge.com to get any kind of opensource program for free.In conclusion, I recomend this program to any one who wants a cheap, reliable windows alternative.

Summary: Garbage
Review: Redhat 9.0 is garbage. I installed it on my laptop, but struggled for weeks to get it to work. It could not recognize almost any of my hardware (HP Deskjet 3320 Printer, HP 3200 Scanner, Xircom Ethernet/Modem card, IOmega USB 250 ZipDisk, Buslink external USB hard drive, etc... ). These are all brand name and relatively new.

Even if I accepted the absence of these pieces of hardware, it was almost impossible to copy or open files.

I am no neophyte to computers, software (especially Unix) or software development, but this operating system is absolutely terrible.

I wish I could leave Microsoft and migrate to Linux, but every incarnation of Linux I have ever used was at best terrible. To be fair, Mandrake was even worse and SuSE Linux at least recognized some of my hardware and its interface was pretty and reasonably thought out, but even less functional.

Trying to get any work done in any of these was impossible. Programs would continuously crash, copying or opening files was an ordeal and took long periods of time when they were successful.

I don't want tons of free software, pretty interfaces or promotional stickers. I want things that work and are well thought out.

I want to thank Redhat, SuSE and Mandrake for proving to me that Linux has an extremely long way to go in competing with MS Windows. Windows is easy to install, easy to use, almost always finds any hardware I thow at it and WORKS, ALL THE TIME!!!!!

Summary: This product is NOT supported!
Review: Redhat 9.0 is no longer even supported by Redhat. Save your money. I'm surprised at Amazon for offering a backlevel product like this!

Summary: No support after Dec 31, 2003
Review: Redhat will no longer support this operating system after Dec 31, 2003.

This is reason enough to purchase and use Windows XP Professional, it is rock solid, has tons of applications and is simply the best operating system.

Summary: Bad Linux Reviews From Washington???
Review: Seems a bit strange to me but at least two of the reviews that slam Linux as worthless are from Washington reviewers.

My experience with RH9 is that it is one heck of an operating system. The installs went perfectly and it recognized my modem, my printer, my network card, my display card, my display, my drives, processor, everything. Perfectly. No calls to anyone to get authorization codes. No balking at running if I change hardware. And I can install it on as many computers as I want - legally.

The desktops are gorgeous and the ability to have multiple ones and switch between them merely by sliding my cursor off the edge of the screen for a moment is wonderful.

The Office apps read and write Windows Office documents just fine and it comes with Office (and tons of other stuff like CD burner software, fax software, games, and on and on) all in the low price. You'd spend hundreds to load up a Windows machine with comparable software.

It's just my opinion but I think Linux has finally become a very viable alternative to the "other" OS. I still dual boot for when I actually do need that "other" OS because there isn't a Linux alternative for something but my default is to jump right in to RH9.

If you are even curious, isn't it worth [the price] just to see it for yourself? You just might be amazed. I was.

Summary: [bad] operating system from ...
Review: The install didn't detect my printer, modem and soundcard. Had to spend 2 days scavenging for drivers and patches, and delving into unix console arcana. Fun for some, but I was hoping to do some meaningful work instead.

I have no doubt the OS is powerful and very flexible, but from a user standpoint it lacks a basic prerequisite: the ability to disappear and get out of the way. Hopefully in 5-10 years all the rough edges will be ironed out. In its present form is nowhere near to being a viable desktop alternative.

Recommended for those who enjoy fixing their car, growing their own food, and messing around with things. For Joe User, this ain't the ticket.

Summary: Windows finally has competition
Review: This is a good, strong product. Installation was easy and all my hardware was detected -- sound has been a historic problem with Linux but multimedia runs fine with this release. Many commands are different from XP but the documentation is good (it's on CD and you have the option of adding it to the menu at the end of the installation process. There are many online resources as well. Where else can you find an operating system with office suite for under $40?

Summary: so easy even a child can install it
Review: This is the easiest install ever! Easier than WinXP! I see some reviews that say their scanners don't work...Almost every single scanner is TWAIN (Technology Without An Interesting Name) compatible, i.e. a STANDARDIZED DRIVER will make it go. One scanner driver on Linux to do it all baby, just like windows. Other peripherals may be flaky, but it simply has not been my experience. Kodak digital camera, Lexmark printer, Netgear wireless 802.11b pcmcia, Dell Latitude CPi laptop, Compaq Presario dual boot with WinXP, all worked out of the box with less hassle than WinXP. I lurv it!

Summary: Red Hat Linux 9.0
Review: This will be a one word, well maybe two word review..It Stinks!! Don't plan on getting any real work done until you can figure out how to make this thing work and recognize your entire system, you know, printer, scanner, USB port, etc. Poorly written and just not worth the effort to get it running correctly. MS Bob would be a better investment!!
