Description:

Joseph Christian Leyendecker was one of the Saturday Evening Post's most prolific illustrators--approximately 320 covers from 1899 to 1943. Only Norman Rockwell, who idolized the older artist, surpassed him in popularity and output. Master of many styles, Leyendecker created designs that ranged from simple to ornate. He was often copied by later illustrators, but none could duplicate his exquisite style of special occasion covers--Christmas, Easter, and Springtime. During his tenure, he created the "New Year Baby," who first appeared in 1907.

No publication is so closely linked with the traditions of the 20th century as the Saturday Evening Post. Through fiction, articles, humor, and incredible illustrations, "America's magazine" informed, entertained, and encouraged millions of readers. It became the looking glass in which Americans saw their lives and their nation reflected.
