Review: Buy this upgrade!!

While not a true switcher (as I run a high end Win XP Pro PC(2.4 ghz dual Intel cpu 2 gig ram [$]Pro-graphics card and the fantastic Sony GWM-FW900 24" wide screen monitor) for [$] a seat 3d CAD/CAM software)

But to replace my ageing Dell 800 p-3 mostly used for games and fun with Linux) as a main home computer

I bought a top of the line iMac 800 G-4 super drive in March to see what all the fuss was about ref OS-X. as I am an old Unix geek thought it would make a nice BAD Unix toy if this Apple thing did not work out and it was so fine to look at as an industrial design engineer.

So if any one was entitled to be miffed with Apple at the full price on this 'point' upgrade it was I.

Well this is NO 'point' upgrade! this is like going from Wi 98sp2 to XP pro SP1 only much more so not only Was X 10.1.5 rock solid on the iMac G-4 this 10.2 is faster and better in every way in very subtle ways

If I could get my work software ported to OS-X I would have a dual G4-1.25 Ghz driving my Sony MFW-900 in a moment

I am a total convert to the fantastic beauty of this OS and I Have ordered Ashlar Velum Cobalt to see if it can replace my work PC software on a Mac

Summary: Can It Get Any Better?
Review: I'm not sure it can, but I'm sure Apple will find a way.

OS X.2 is noticeably faster ... and renders everything with a crispness of detail that had me "wowing" within minutes of installation.

Good news for those who still need "Classic" for some of their favorite applications: Classic starts up much more rapidly.

Others have noted problems with Classic that have simply not occurred for me ... and I've had no trouble with Internet Explorer, either. I would suggest that IE problems may be the result of not using the most recent version.

I use some of the new features (a substantially revamped Sherlock), and haven't yet had a need for others (Inkwell) ... but I believe I got a very good deal with the purchase of this upgrade.

Summary: Paying for updates
Review: I am an Apple certified repair tech. I was reading through all this stuff, as I am about to go and install this for a customer of mine. One of the complaints I am seeing a lot of here is the fact that one must pay ($$$) for this "upgrade". I would like to just point out to these folks that Microsoft has been ... their customers for YEARS in the same manner. They will release a bug-ridden "enterprise" OS for some rediculous amount. Then two years later, they put a "service release" out that costs the same as the original OS. This "service release" is not even a complete OS but rather, just a patch (like Windows NT sr 6 which must be installed upon the previous service releases -- fun to install from scratch)!

While I must agree that it is sad to see the day Apple acts like MS, I think that the people here who have indicated they will move to Windows XP over this issue are kidding themselves if they think they aren't going to pay for each update to THAT operating system! Not to mention, if you are already running some Mac OS (which means you already have a Mac), are you REALLY gonna go out and buy a PC just so you can run Windows XP and thumb your nose at Apple? That'll cost you a minimum of ($$$). Doesn't make sense if you can just pay ($$$) for this new OS and put the whole thing to rest. I'll put my money on Apple and OS X.

Summary: wait until the rest of the world catches up
Review: UMAX scanners don't work in 10.2, Veuscan doesn't work, some Epson printers don't work well (1270), Quark is still behind the times in 9.?, importing mail addresses is impossible unless you like to write code, HELP index is gone - in ten days I average 1-2 restarts per day and have had to do one clean install. The interface is cute but I haven't been interested in cute since I was 18. FileMaker 6.0 out of the box changes data so do the upgrade before you start to work. I've used Macs for 12 years - threw out PCs where I worked but this release needs work along with the community..

Summary: Blows Windows Away
Review: Mac OS X was the best OS in the world at the time of its release, and this version just puts it over the top. Bravo Apple! Microsoft... you are dead in the water with this baby!

Summary: 10.2 Jaquar Rocks
Review: I just upgraded my G4 667 dvi Powerbook to 10.2 from 10.1.4...OS X is a very good OS.

The powerbook is my first Apple and 10.2 make it the main computer I now use. I still have a desktop with XP Pro but I just don't use it as much anymore now that I have the powerbook and 10.2.

Compared to 10.1.4, 10.2 has a lot of nice new features for the general user as well as the experienced user. I love the ease of connecting to my XP machine and browsing any shared foldes I have setup. I never got this running under 10.1.4 but under 10.2 it was a breeze. The OS found the workgroup and allowed me to connect to the shared folders in no time. I also like Ichat, Itunes 3.0 and the new Sherlock. All of the applications offer ease of use and great functionality.

With OS X 10.2 I feel we are finally getting to the point where for the average user there will be no compelling reason to only think of Microsoft XP. OS X the and software that comes along with it or that you can buy does just about everything that average home user needs.

If you are a Mac user I recommend this upgrade, if you are a Windows user thinking of changing...now is the time.

Summary: Made My Epson Printer work!!
Review: I installed the OS X 10.2 as an upgrade from 10.1.2. Easy installation. No problems.

It made my Epson Stylus Photo 890 work flawlessly. Epson was uncooperative with old system 10.1. Epson's old printer driver was a mess. Overall this OS X 10.2 Operating System seems to be a significant improvement. I am glad I bought it and glad I own a Mac.

Summary: Jaquar is amazing!
Review: This update truly adds an amazing array of features to an already great OS. It's faster and more responsive. It easily connects with Windows machines. It adds an amazing movie times, review and trailer browser and a phone book with map. It includes an AOL instant message client built-in. The address book is systemwide now. You type in an entry in the AOL client now and it will automatically appear in the email program's address book. Speaking of the email program, "Mail" is very intelligent and filters based on a learning mechanism. For Unix geeks, the OS includes a more recent (and much better) build along with more Unix programs installed. All in all, this is turning into an incredible OS.

That said, there are some bugs that will probably need to be worked out before it's perfect. It doesn't actually ever stop working or crash, mind you, but there are a couple of rough edges that power users might notice. Applications and printer drivers will also need to be updated. These updates normally take about a month to come out, so in about two weeks, Jaguar will be virtually perfect.

Summary: Easy To Use, Flawless Upgrade
Review: One of the best Apple OS's ever. Worth every penny.
Better speed and quicker startups (for both G4 and G3). Very smooth feel, solid operation. Mail app (with new filters) and Address Book are indispensable, reliable tools. Axis print server with Epson 740 works exceptionally well with 10.2. Apple has delivered with Windows networking - easy to use and reliable. (Of course, Mac networking is a snap to set up.)
Helper apps are very handy. Sherlock is much improved. And a quick Find has been added to the OS. Plus, a Midi tool has been provided.
And alas, Spring Loaded Folders are back!!
I haven't even touched on the ever useful Developer Tools (included in the box).
This upgrade has something for every level of computer user. And it works out of the box ... no fuss, no headaches.
