Rating: Summary: Excellent upgrade! Review: Jaguar recognized my USB CF Card reader, PCI/USB Card, and other peripherals without any additional drivers. It has lots of new features that make 10.1 look like the base model--while this looks like the feature-packed deluxe model. A worthy upgrade.
Rating: Summary: OS X is why I'm switching Review: I'll be switching to a Wintell machine running ME.OS 10 changed just about every proven aspect of the Macintosh user interface. I can't stand the confusion of missing features and hidden access. Tens of thousands of system files reside buried deep in numerous directories. If something goes wrong, clean install is your only option. You'll need permission from God to do the simplest of maintenance. The OS is incapable of backing itself up. Something goes wrong and you'll be doing a clean install. Your old applications are worthless. Send another thousand dollar check to Adobe to replace those critical applications. Too bad you were just starting to forget forking over the check last time Apple made you replace all your applications. See a pattern yet?
Rating: Summary: Excellent OS/X upgrade! Review: I purchased my copy early and have not been disappointed since. OS/X Jaguar is great! Lots of tools included with the OS, it's faster than the previous release, and has support for more devices. Plus there are so many enhancements and new features. A great deal! No regrets, I never looked back.
Rating: Summary: Problems with Mac OS 10.2 Review: I am and will continue to be a Macintosh only user, due to its versatility and ease of use. However, there are some serious problems with this new OS 10.2 system, if you are upgrading from 9.x. My guess is that this system is well functioning and certainly an attractive package if you are using it on a new computer or upgrading from 10.x. However, I was upgrading a 1 and a 1/2 year old G4 powerbook with 9.1. I found out quickly that in order to go from what Mac is calling Classic (my previous operating system 9.1) to Jaguar, I needed 3-4 upgrades to my Os system and 3-4 upgrades to my word processing system (Appleworks). Without these, the two operating systems refused to communicate, making it impossible to transfer documents to the new system or print off of the old, due to Jaguar not accepting my Appleworks 6.0 (needed 6.24, in 3-4 graduated upgrades) and my original OS system refusing to print due to the inclusion of new printer drivers off of Jaguar and needing 3-4 upgrades to be able to communicate with Jaguar and use the new drivers and other resources. Also, both of these problems were causing serious disk errors and corruption of the disk in both operating system modes. According to Apple, in the short year between systems, none of these upgrades exist on disc anymore!!!
Rating: Summary: Best OS ever! Review: OS X 10.2 Jaguar is the best operating system ever designed. Hands down, the best!
Rating: Summary: Insanely Great Again! Review: Jaguar is the best thing to happen to Apple since the Mac itself! It's not just a new OS, Jaguar feels like I have a brand new computer altogether.
Rating: Summary: The next evolution in operating systems Review: I have been procrastinating the switch to OS X from OS 9 for a number of reasons. First, I felt it to be a real hassle always having to switch to Classic when I wanted to use my software. Second, when I tried an earlier version of OS X, none of my peripherals worked. And third, I was loathe to give up an old and trusted friend who I had gotten VERY used to - The Mac OS ( from version 7-9). I finally broke down and bought Jaguar because these three criticisms, and many more, have been finally, and fully addressed. Every software title I use save one, is now OS X native, all of my peripherals work fine if not better (as is the case with my tempermental external CD-R), and I am quickly becoming used to my new friend, who has turned out to be a vastly superior OS. OS X (Jaguar) is a pleasure to use and isn't as difficult as I thought to get used to. Now is definately the time to switch if you haven't already done so. OS X is the future of the Mac and it is bound to make that future a bright one.
Rating: Summary: A good OS approaches greatness Review: If Apple had this OS 5 years ago, they'd have a 30% market share now. What they have here is a modern Unix-based OS with a truly friendly and useful interface but with all the power under the hood. The Mail program that comes with it is quite nice, and contains the best and easiest client-side spam filter I have ever encountered. iCal is nice, but isn't industrial strength. This OS never crashes - the only times I reboot are when upgrading software. Applications crash all the time, but the OS moves right along without a hiccup. Airport works seamlessly with DSL, even with my older base station. Firewire and USB are truly plug and play with no hitches. Quartz looks sharp. PDF is very well supported, and print-to-PDF seems to work well everywhere. Some of the Finder deficiencies of 10.l have been fixed. My only major complaint is that the Java support needs to be updated. I hear that's coming, but I don't want to wait. Minor quibbles: if you have an older printer, you'll have a hard time finding a driver for it. Also, you will need quite a lot of RAM. The minimum of 128 mB specified is too slow. Go with at least 256 - RAM is cheap these days. I also wish that Apple would open-source more of the Apps and OS, although I understand there are licensing problems with some components.
Rating: Summary: Just plain stunning Review: Installing Jaguar on my G4 Cube was a great, easy, quick and stunning... BR>But seriously MAC has always been better / easier than Windows (even though i think Microsoft is a great company giving good support for MAC users) with Jaguar, Apple just makes life TOO easy. OSX has grown into a powerhouse system. Ignore gripes about printers and whatever, just enjoy the easy interface, improved software and amazing networking opportunities. IF YOU ARE HESITATING? DON"T!!! Just buy it and see the future of OS. We all love our macs, we all love the stability of classic OS...
Rating: Summary: Just keeps getting better Review: OS X has something for everyone. Whether you want to browse the Web and email, work with pictures or home movies, maintain an MP3 collection, play games, develop software, experiment with free Unix/Linux software (via Fink or otherwise), or run a huge variety of network utilities, OS X does it better than anything else out there. I have enjoyed OS X since it first came out, and it keeps getting more enjoyable as Apple adds new features and iApps. I recommend it to everyone from the complete newbie to the most seasoned Unix admin.
