Summary: Low Tech but still fun
Review: I played Oregon Trail II for years. It is a basic game and fun for the whole family. When I received the 5th edition I figured three versions different would mean a number of changes. I could not load it on my Gateway computer because it kept indicating it could not create a directory. Very odd since I have loaded numerous games and never got this error before. I could not find anything on their web site to assist me in fixing the problem. We did load it on my wifes Sony computer and it ran fine. We were slightly disappointed in the new version since the only really noticeable change was the animated movies with the children travelling the trail. The few add ons of fishing and rafting are nice but I would have liked to see a little more help for new users or irregular players with figuring out the right trail to take with a detailed map. Overall it is an updated version of II suited to run on XP or W2K with a few extras. Considering most new games run around $50 we should not be to disappointed since The Learning Company tries to make games geared for the whole family for a reasonable price.

Summary: More complicated than anticipated
Review: I purchased this game for my 9 year old daughter. Although she was very interested in the concept, she soon lost interest. It is too detailed and time consuming for her attention span. She wanted to do more and plan less! Although this is one area I knew she was weak in, the game couldn't hold my attention for the amount of time it took to set everything up. This item is definately for the child who has large blocks of time to spend on what my daughter called a "project."

Summary: Crashes
Review: I read several reviews (unfortunately after my purchase) that talked about the program (version 4 mostly) crashing. We purchased version 5, you'd think it would be better....Nope. I have had this game for my daughter since October, and have never made it to Oregon. It will simply shut down in the middle of a game. I have un-installed and re-installed the game. It makes no difference. I have a new computer, and plenty of space, a fast processor, no reason why this simple game will not work properly. Very disappointed. I played this game when I was in school, and thought that my kids would enjoy it.
I also agree with several people who think that the beginning purchasing is too compicated. It is confusing for ME, let alone a grade-schooler.

Summary: Genius!
Review: I'm most definitely not afraid to admit that I play this game. In fact, it's difficult to tear me away from it. The game is extremely accurate to the actual events that occurred along the trail. I don't recommend it for young children; but preferably for ages 12 and up. It takes an amazing amount of good judgement, whether you're buying suppies, crossing rivers, curing ailments, or bartering with fellow travelers. Although it does seem to exclude some of the worst hardships, it is still the best interactive account of a historical event I have seen thus far in life. Kudos to the inventor--this game is a masterpiece!

Review: I've been playing OT since it's first version, back in the 80s. This is a slightly jazzed up COPY of version 2. IMO, version 3 far exceeds anything before or since. Version 2 is pretty good if you want a basic game (start to finish in an hour or so). Version 3 is great, with the addition of fishing, gathering, and player driven trading, along with the much better graphics. Version 4 consistently crashes on an incredibly powerful gaming computer system, which I use to run MMORPGs. There's no reason that such a basic game should be so incredibly unstable. I've never managed to get to Oregon with that game. It always crashes shortly after leaving Kansas. I was so pleased to see Version 5 on the shelf, and so incredibly irritated that I had wasted my money once I had loaded it!! The only difference between 2 and 5 is a different border frame around the picture, and the addition of the "story" of transporting the children to Oregon. Other than that, in all important ways (UI, graphics, trading, hunting, etc.), it is identical to Version 2. Don't waste your money on v5. Hunt down a used copy of v3. It's a much better way to spend your money.

Review: If u bought all of the other Oregon trails you'll already know how fun this one is going to be because i bought all the games they are excellent .Many people at my school were talking about it .My teacher thought the third one was the best.I hope this one is the best of the rest.And please order it.Thank u!

Summary: High Educational Value!
Review: It seems to be true that they didn't put much money on this game, but money isn't everything and I disagree when people talk about lack of creativity. In spite of being "just an upgrade from version 2"- BTW, the best version so far, the new version brings movies that are great. They enhanced the game enormously with a huge amount of historical content. My son loved it, he is playing it all the time, and I know that he is really learning with it; after all, every time you play is a different story!Although some of the art looks kind of old, the game is much bigger and better than most of the games being released now, its new interface functions very well and have some new activities too - besides hunting, you can fish and gather plants! In my opinion, it was money well spent!

Summary: Lack of creativity
Review: The Learning Company didn't invest much thought into Oregon Trail 5. The game is very similar to Oregon Trail 2. The characters even look the same and the music. The interaction screens are almost the same. The new cartoon characters are distracting. It seems like they are trying to make the game easier for younger users, but my 4th and 5th grade users were not impressed. I was really looking forward to this version because I was hoping that the creaters had added more new features, music, and more interaction and user control-all things that this game is lacking. I could have saved my money. However, it is better that version 4, that used so much Quicktime the game could have played itself.
