Summary: Its what you expect from Mandrake...
Review: A decent GNU/Linux distribution, although as this is a "dot-0" release, there are quite a few bugs. First of all, forget installing this if you have SCSI hard drives connected to an Adaptec controller, or a SCSI CDRom, you simply can't do it.I have installed this on a stock desktop (all IDE) and it preforms quite well, all the things you expect from Mandrake are there, slick GUI tools, KDE and Gnome support, bleeding edge versions of the applications installed, etc. Issues here are in order to install some tools, you *really* have to jump through hoops. An example of this is pine, the old familiar (and my favorite) email reader. It is not listed in the default Installation GUI, it is on the CDs, but no where to be found in the Installation program. Now for those of us who set up linux boxes to access remotely, having eight or nine Graphical email apps is beside the point... Overall, if you are new to Linux, this is the Distro for you. If you have been around the block a few times, take a look at SuSe or Debian, especially if you run everything off SCSI or high end RAID systems...

Summary: Perfect for those migrating from windows
Review: I have been slowly migrating to Linux from the windows world and this is by far the easiest of the Linux installs(if you have fairly basic hardware) . It comes with just about everything you would want out of teh box and adding new programs is faily easy. I would recommend this to newbies. You can always get a more complex linux flavor in the future if you become a Linux expert.

Review: Tired of Microsoft Windows and Windows NT? Mandrake 8.0 is truly one of the best Linux solutions on the market today. For a couple of years now I have been developing software for the Linux OS, and I finally found one that setup all of my hardware during the install, and configured the X11 services, and loaded the KDE desktop right after the XDM login. Also it has many configuration tools that no one else has. I found the tools that comes with Mandrake really made the post setup a breeze. The installation is extremely strait foward, it detected my vidio and souncard, and I chose a generic SVGA monitor set at 1024=768 60 Hertz non-interlaced, and it went on without a single problem. Also the Java Run Time, Viavoice Dictation, Adobe Acrobat, Real Player, are some great packages that are included with this Linux distribution. If you want to try Linux this would be the one to try.
