Description:

Give yourself a total makeover, assess your personality, or create a scrapbook of pictures of yourself traveling all over the world. With Seventeen Style Studio Deluxe, you don't have to spend a fortune on hairstyling to create a new look for yourself. To get started, all you need is a scanned photograph of yourself.

Seventeen Style Studio Deluxe uses now-standard photographic alteration technology to give users new perspectives on their personal style. A gallery of hairstyles, fashion accessories, and make-up colors are available in this makeover package, all of which can be applied to the user's photograph or, if preferred, those of preset fashion models. The altered photo can then be pasted onto a number of bodies, creating images from imagined trips. This package makes it easy and entertaining to create and send out virtual postcards of yourself or friends in front of the Eiffel Tower, rock climbing, or heading up a cheerleading squad.

Seventeen Style Studio Deluxe also has two smaller features: an advice column and personality quizzes. The advice focuses primarily on issues of fashion and appearance, with extensive essays devoted to the minute details of make-up application and skin care. The personality quizzes are multiple-choice offerings designed to help users pick out a perfect boyfriend or assess the "weirdness" of their families.

As a makeover program, Seventeen Style Studio Deluxe is significantly less powerful than comparable products. The range of hairstyles, accessories, and makeup products available for user experimentation is very limited. The portion of the application dedicated to importing user photographs is inflexible, not allowing for any of the touching up that is usually required to make the photo blend well with the various style offerings. Applying make-up--especially lipstick--is clunky, and users may thus find it hard to generate photographs that are genuinely appealing or helpful.

Even so, the program offers some entertainment possibilities for girls who want to experiment with a range of looks and facial color schemes. --Alyx Dellamonica
