Rating: Summary: Fine Software But Missing B&W Conversion Review: Designed to compete against Adobe Elements in the Prosumer range of the digital editing market, Capture 4 is a solid product: it does just about every thing its competitors do.
As a life long Nikon user, I was looking forward to this software due to a series of enhanced features that apply specifically to Nikon files (NEFs). However, it lacks one basic feature that has relegated it to "seldom used" application status on my PC. Capture 4 does not allow the user to convert color photos into B&W -- a basic and often-used function. You can do so in another Nikon program (Nikon View) but why do users have to load and use two programs to accomplish a task that is a) commonly used by many photographers b) bundled in even the most rudimentary shareware editing software c) is technically a breeze.
I like this software. It's generally inuitive and works well. But I can't overlook the B&W conversion issue. It's key for me. Until this feature is added as a free upgrade, I'll continue to use and recommend Photoshop Elements.
Rating: Summary: Software freat to control D70 in your Studio. Review: I think current version is 4.2 that fixed some bugs, but Amozon does not have it yet.
The software was designed to provide USB (or wireless) control of D70 camera (as well as some other Nikon digitals) from your computer.
Since it stores/can store images directly in your computer for instant display, it is exellent for studio work. It certainly was designed to control in real-time picture taking parameters of Nikon digital cameras. It provides many features that can make you wonder if it can comptete with Adobe Elements.
Rating: Summary: Great functionality but buggy Review: If you've spent the money on a Nikon camera that takes NEF (RAW) format, and you are a serious photographer, you should spend the money on this product.
The power of Capture is awesome and the user interface is very intuitive--unlike Adobe Photoshop/Elements. Best of all, any changes that you make to a NEF file can be undone, so your original image is always available.
The bad news is that the program has a nasty habit of crashing, so save your changes frequently and be prepared to reload as needed. Another problem that I have had is that Nikon technical support is not at all knowledgeable about the software. If your question is not one of the basic ones for which Nikon can email back a "canned response" you are on your own. The manual is pretty good, and as noted above, the program generally does what you expect it to do. Never the less, Nikon should support it better and improve the reliablity of the software.
