Summary: It works for me
Review: After reading the reviews, I almost decided not to buy this product. But after one evening of check writing, I gave in. I had used a quicken demo years ago, but this was the first time I had gotten "down and dirty" with financial software.

Now I don't use use the securities features (yet), so I can't review those. But I do own a house in a different state, so my finances can get pretty hairy if I don't stay on top of them.

I use the on-line banking features with a BOA account, and I have never been happier. It rocks. I pay all of my bills with the click of a mouse, and have never been more timely with them.

It did take some time to set everything up (accounts, mortgage info, etc.), but it was nothing compared to how much time I spent every month with paper checks, statements, and good old fashioned pencil and paper.

I like the interface. It gives me just enough information to be useful, but it took a little time figuring out how to use it to my advantage.

There are little annoyances...recurring messages that are not very useful, the ads. But these are minor in comparison to what I am getting out of the product.

Summary: Disappointed with this version.
Review: As a long time and very heavy user of this product, I disappointed with the latest 2001 release. The product no longer allows you to separate your view of a particular stock 'overview' (with gains and losses) by account, it forces all account holdings into one window per security (lumping all holdings (whether in IRA accounts or taxable accounts) together) which is a big minus from prior releases. I have also found three bugs in this early release which have been reported to the company and are related to downloading quotes from the Quicken.com site. I would give them a little while to work the kinks out before buying. I also think that the feel and flexibility of the new version is more cumbersome and clunky to move around in than prior versions. A bit too much 'change for change sake' rather than simplification where needed and additional number crunching where needed in the investment section. Basically, however, I would say that the product (if fuctioning properly) is an invaluable organizational tool for those with reasonably complex financial data needs.

Summary: Intuit places customers last
Review: Be careful!

I've used Quicken for years, but I'm now looking for alternatives. INTUIT PLACES CUSTOMERS LAST! Quicken 2001 has been very buggy, frequently failing to connect to my financial institutions. (It usually gets it after about 5 trys). What's worse, Intuit is constantly trying to cram new products and services down my throat. For fun, go to their web site (www.intuit.com) and just TRY to find any support. You can barely navigate through all the junk Intuit is trying to sell you. My multiple support e-mails have all gone unanswered. (Any idea what error OL-248-A means?) Lastly, their registration process makes it very difficult to reinstall the program if you change computers or operating systems.

I'm also very disappointed in their security. They go out of their way to have you download your most sensitive financial information to quicken.com. The last thing I want is every detail of my financial life available on the Internet. However, you have to be very cautious using Quicken, because at multiple places the program attempts to have you download your financial data to Intuit. I'm usually not paranoid, but I'm surprised and very disappointed by Intuit's cavalier attitude towards customer security.

Intuit's key is Quicken (and TurboTax). Intuit's goal appears to be ownership of consumer's most detailed financial data. There are lots of potential uses for such data - marketing, direct sales, consumer profiling, etc. However, I'm not at all happy that Intuit is no longer to be satisfied with the money I spend on TurboTax and a Quicken update, and appears hell-bent on finding other ways to make money from my use of Quicken.

Intuit has become the most USER HOSTILE software company around. By contrast, dealing with Microsoft is a pleasure. Looks like I'll need to learn to use Microsoft Money after all...

Summary: Excellent Upgrade from Quicken 98
Review: Better and finally usable 401K tracking
Better electronic bank statement importing/reconciling
Better Windows 2000 integration
Bad way of integrating Quicken.com web spam into product
Bad way of evangelizing quicken.com for tracking your personal info online.

I agree with the user who complained about the external features masqurading as if their incorporated within quicken. I also HATE the way it never tells you which buttons are going to take you to the web, as if working in quicken and working on quicken.com are the same thing.

They also have this covert way of repeatidly asking you to store your data online. WTH?? My bank statements and all my incredibly personal accounts im going to store on quicken.com? huh? Nevertheless, the buttons are everywhere like a hidden minefield, and make 1 mistake, pow! you shipped your data to be viewed online in your account. So they will in the future charge for their website I imagine...

I been using it since some early DOS version I can't remember back in 1992. Never lost any data and I store the Floppies of old years with my taxes, still.

Summary: Do Not Buy This Product Unless...
Review: Do Not Buy This Product unless you are prepared to spend even more money through Intuit just to get it to work. I have spent over 1/2 a month and countless hours on the phone between my bank and Intuit trying to get Quicken to accept my bank information. My bank tells me it is a software problem. Every time I call Intuit they expect me to pay $1.95/minute to fix it. It seems they are unwilling to support thier own product. I am sending this back today.

Summary: Quicken on-line bill payment doesn't work
Review: I agree with most everyone else reviewing this product. We have used it for years to manage our budget, expenses and pay bills electronically. Over the years as they add feature upon feature, the program has become less intuitive, more quirky, and less stable. When I installed this new version, elctronic bill payment through CheckFree stopped working. When trying to pay bills the following message appears "Quicken was not able to complete your request. The next time you go online for this financial institution, Quicken will attempt to resend your original request. Please try again later. If the problem continues call Quicken Bill Pay @ 800-463-6765 (OL-293-A)." When I caled that number they told me to call 520-618-7155 or 630-692-3000 (at my expense for their problem! How rude!) After about 4 tries with various technicians I finally reached one poor soul who said "We have no known solution for an OL-293A error" and then passed me to a very nice guy who said "they have no solution at this time, but are working on it." He took my telephone number and said they would call me when it was fixed, but could give me no time frame. His only solution for me was to go back to my previous version of quicken 2000 using the old Qdata file formats which are now out of date. I'm waiting for their phone call and manually writing checks. This sucks! don't buy this piece of buggy software, especially if you want to pay bills on=line. This is how companies go out of business by sticking it to their customers!

Summary: Don't buy any Intuit products
Review: I had an early version of this product which I transferred to a new computer in February (had to reregister which it let me). It worked great.I have never had any prblems with it. We had to reprogram the computer in April and when I put Quicken back on it wanted me to register again. I tried to register and it finally just blocked me out of MY INFORMATAION ON MY SOFTWARE IN MY COMPUTER. I call their so called customer service. Seems that once this product gets so old they no longer support it and "for my own good" they will not let me run it. That their legal department said due to 2yk that they can not give me a register number to keep it going. I explained to them that it was running fine and that I did not need them to support it I just want them to let me acess my information. I went up three levels. They all said that I have to pay to upgrade. (I just missed a free download that they claim that they mailed the offer to their customers the information, mine must have been lost in the mail) That's always a good one don't you think. No one cares. I can not beleive that this is legal. They are holding my information for ransom. Is this softwarenapping or is it extorsion? I would be careful buying anything from this company. No telling what they will do for your own good.

Summary: Quicken 20001 Deluxe for Linux
Review: I have been an Quicken customer for a long time, but having recently switched my operating system to RedHat Linux, I have decided to withhold my support for new Intuit products until they port them to Linux. Intuit has refused in the past to do so and they underestimate the demand for a Linux version. I hope everyone who feels the same way will also join me and vote with their dollars and not purchase any more Intuit products until they port them to Linux. thank you.
