Summary: This Product Is Ridiculous!
Review: First of all there are no liability accounts, asset accounts, not even an equity account? Payroll has liability accounts. There is no place to even put liability accounts because they provide you with the groups and you cannot CHANGE OR ADD any other groups. The only groups that you have available are Expense and Income accounts. I said well, there must be away to add them. There is no way! That is why so many people are complaining, they just don't understand why they are having so much trouble getting it to work properly. I've just recently purchased this product on July 10, 2003. I purchased the 2003 software. Have the people who have been selling this product taken a look at what they are selling? There is no way that people have gotten by with these reports. There are none! There is no register, no P&L statement, the cashflow, balance sheet, account balance report, transactions report within the sample company are totally ridiculous, they make no sense. The software itself makes no sense! Just take a look at 2003 for yourself. That is why so many people are complaining; they may not understand accounting, but they do know that something is wrong. Nothing can balance because they've put everything under expense accounts including mortgage payments, car notes, loan payments, etc. those are all liability accounts they even put automobiles under an expense account; which is an asset. And, you cannot add your own libility or assets accounts. That is why the balance sheet has a negative amount; there are no other items on the balance sheet! The only thing with an entry on the balance sheet is the checking account and that has a $10,000.00 negative within there sample account. That is because everything is thrown under expenses. There is not even an equity group to help balance things out.

That is why the instructions that they have given within there help file is so limited. It is not only limited, it makes no sense. Once I started reading and printing the booklet out, I knew right away that it did not make any sense. They were jumping all over the place! You could not find any clear information about anything or any reports. I laughed so hard and said; how in the world did they ever get away with this! It is unbelievable that these people have gotten away with this and no one has noticed it. Especially with the prices that they charge. That is why customers say that they do not answer there telephone. What kind of reports are people printing, the folk that state that this product is so good. Maybe prior to 2003. But, I would love to take a look at those! Take a look for yourself. "Unbelievable".

Maybe, once people pay there service fee to get help they will download the correct information. Yea, right!

Summary: User Friendly?
Review: I have been using Versacheck for a number of years, and it is great printing your own checks when you run out and don't have to pay the outragous bank fees for business checks. However, I too have found that it is not very user friendly. Once you finally get the checks lined up (providing you have experience in drafting autocad or a math degree you CAN do this) it worked great. I also liked the fact that you can print your logo on your check.
The real problem with Versacheck though is, no matter how much time you spend lining up the bank routing numbers, they still won't go through the bank processing center very easily, at least not at my bank. The problem that I was told by my bank was, Versachecks do not have the magnetic strips on the bottom edge of the checks to go through thier machines. So every time I get the checks back from the bank, they have a strip on the bottom that the bank has to tape on to read the checks. So far, my bank has always cashed them, and I have had no complaints from the processesing center at the bank, but you think Versacheck would have corrected this problem by now. So, my advice to anyone who purchases it- Don't spend too many hours trying to line up the routing numbers, they will come back with the bank strips anyway. The People over at G7 who sell Versacheck, told me that it is the Bank that is behind the times, because their readers still only read magnetic ink. If you want to invest the money, you can by magnetic ink for around 50% more than regular ink cartrides and If you are a perfectionist, like me however and insist on lining up the routing numbers,(useless, unless you have a very good printer to do this) skip down to the 5th paragraph.
The second major problem with Versacheck, at least the 2001 version I have, is that there is not a check register included in the software. We had to save our old check register from the bank and have it formated to fit into our daytimer, and redesigned at our local printer with our starting check numbers.
I also have to buy a certain type of perferated paper at [a local store], (daytimer refill) that I take to my printer to have the check register copied on.
So once you get all this worked out, and you don't mind the bank sending back your checks with your routing numbers attached, in special oversized envelopes, and some checks not listed by check number on your online statement (for those of you who use online banking) it works out ok. But I know of a lot of people who have returned this product for these exact reasons.
Another hint to those of you who decide to buy the product,- Although it says on the box that it is compatible with Quickbooks, you do have to be carefull what checks you will use with it. I found that there were certain things I had to enter in the Versacheck software, and delete from Quickbooks. For instance, your address on the check should be added in Versacheck and not in the Quickbooks printing options, but your logo should be defaulted in Quickbooks, because it will take up too much space if you do it in Versacheck, and your checks will not line up. I also found that My Business Checks line up much better than the Versachecks because they are a slightly larger and if you are adding a Logo, they work much better.
So plan a weekend to find the correct checks, a local printer that will use your paper to print the register on, a graphic designer to do the register, and hope the correct checks that you choose are *in stock at your office supply store and you may be happy with your final product and also have the satisfaction of being a freelance graphic designer-drafter, printer and have many quality bonding hours with your PC.
* ( I have yet to find it in stock at my local office supply store, and if it is in stock, I am amazed. [One local store] tells me that they dont keep many in stock because of the magnetic strip problem, and not too many people are purchasing the product any more becuase of this problem.)Another downfall about Versecheck is that the support is very limited. G7 never answers their phone, and if they do, they are amazed that you even got through to them. They will ask you.."how did you get this number?" Hint: Call the number for Sales and dont call G7 directly, they only give you useless recordings...

Summary: Write your own checks
Review: I have Versa Check professional and it is not as easy to use as I expected, but it does print my own checks for me and does it well. I feel it will save me $$ on check costs and it does work with Quicken and Quickbooks as well as other software.

Summary: Buy this and you're on your own
Review: I used VersaCheck 2000 for a year or so, and it was OK. Nothing fantastic, but usable. When I upgraded to Windows XP, I purchased VersaCheck 2002 which turned out to be a step backwards. The set up was sloppy and getting items to print was very difficult. Last month the program turned up an error nothing I could do would revive it. I couldn't even get in to access the "Help" feature. I went to the G7 web site and it appears they will only "sell" you help at a high price. I wrote emails to G7 on 3 separate occasions and have received no replies at all. If you buy this and it works, you're lucky. If there's a problem, you won't get help from G7. There must be better programs than this clunker that offers no support. Based on my disappointing experience, I recommend that you avoid VersaCheck. I feel ripped off.

Summary: Problems with this product
Review: Previously had Versacheck 2000 for MS WINDOWS. This was a great product. The Premium is a different story. Disk would not load and had to get another one. Some of the features did not work and the "help" feature is not much help. Tried to use the Web site for tech help and could not get any. If you email the tech people directly it costs you a fee. There is no 800 number for help. Would not recommend this product.

Summary: Not What I Expected
Review: This product is very difficult to understand. There are no workable help screens and the check design feature is complicated. There is also a bias toward relocating your checking account information into their accounting program rather than utilizing Quicken or Quickbooks. I thought it was just a way to design and pring my own checks, but it is far more involved than that. I am returning it and cannot recommend it.

Summary: VersaCheck is saving a lot of money for us
Review: We bought the 2003 VersaCheck Premium and its savings us over $300 a month since we dont have to buy pre-printed checks anymore. We have always used another accounting system, and VersaCheck was a way for us to use the lower cost blank check paper without a lot of cost or setup hassles or switching accounting systems.

In addition we can upload and distribute checks easily and much lower cost that the Intuit offering. Its built right in to VC Premium and connects very well with G7's Qchex.com electronic check portal. We can even use any bank account we want there, with minimum effort to setup and only $0.25 per check sending fee.

Our bank did ask us to use magnetic toner for some accounts, and rather than switch banks, we found that the magnetic toner and magnetic ink that we found on the versacheck.com site was reasonably priced and economical to use.

Our other programs have never saved us any money when it comes to printing checks or electronic transactions. Our accounting software is fine programs for accounting, but we find VersaCheck Check creation software pretty compelling for actually helping cut costs of printing checks or electronic check distribution. Easy to install, and works reliably. Simple to upgrade if needed, and plenty of help files if needed. Strongly recommended if you want to cut your cost of printing checks or need an economical means to distribute checks electronically.
