Summary: Get MORE Than You Pay For
Review: Star Office IS a viable alternative to the more traditional (and much more expensive) MS Office. Both the word processor and spreadsheet program were easy to get started and had help systems that got me going with my existing Office 97 documents with no problems. I liked the "appearance" settings that enable you to set the look and feel of the program to either a Macintosh, Windows or UNIX Motif type of user interface, and this feature worked flawlessly on both the Windows, UNIX and Linux platforms I tested on. I moved the Star Office format and Office 97 format documents I created between platforms without problem. Star Office would easily a four star product except for the fact that it wants to become your desktop, presenting its view of the system rather that the one the OS presents to you. I found that rather annoying and consider it to be one of the few true negatives in a program that otherwise shines, especially given the price.

Summary: StarOffice 5.2 rocks!
Review: StarOffice 5.2 is a great, affordable alternative to other office suite offerings. It's easy to use, has all the power the others have, and the price is fantastic! You can easily save your StarOffice documents as Microsoft files and StarOffice opens Microsoft documents as well. I love being able to instantly move from application to application without feeling like I'm moving to a different world or wait for a minute before they launch! All the applications are integrated into a single desktop that I can customize and tweak to my needs. StarOffice 5.2 has a new fan in me!

Summary: Go Sun!
Review: I was lucky enough to work with the 5.1 version of this program and I liked what I saw. I grabbed a copy of Star Office 5.2 when it was first released and I can honestly say Star Office has come along way from the last (5.1) edition.

Users of Star Office 5.1 will find little to no problems updating to version 5.2 New users to Star Office will find a similar interface to the popular Office Suites.

Cross-platform use and compatabilty are important issues in today's market of diffrent software in diffrent organizations. Star Office makes that worry an almost concern of the past. At home, I easily created Presentations, Documents and Spreadsheets that easily transferred over to my Microsoft Office run organization. Star Office also has an e-mail/newsgroup reader, HTML Editor, scheduling, drawing, database and imaging programs. In other words - it is a fully intergrated office suite.

I recommend Star Office 5.2 to new and old users of OFfice Suites - many of the "cosmetic" concerns with 5.1 have now been corrected.

Lastly, Star Office isn't as memory intensive as several of the popular Office Suites.

Summary: EX-Microsoft End-User
Review: I have been a Microsoft user all of my life, having paid for my upgrade to MSOffice 97 with no major enhancements, I have found that StarOffice provides most of the features I used in MS Office with out the extortionary price. The product provides excellent Wordprocessing, Presentation and Spreadsheet tools. Also, the Database included is excellent. Since I am a multi-platform end-user, the fact that StarOffice runs on Solaris, Linux and Windows makes it extremely appealing, as my employer will not pay for MSOffice for my home machine. I understand that they are working on a Macintosh version. I also have a Mac G4 at home and cannot wait for Macintosh version. Finally, since my Macintosh version of MSOffice is over 2 years behind the Windows version, StarOffice is great for releasing all versions at the same time. It is a great product and fairly priced.

Summary: HELP!
Review: I am not a dummy, but I think that I need StarOffice 5.2 for Dummies also. As one of the others has stated. I have had nothing but problems getting this thing installed and finally gave up! It is just a big mess! And now I cannot get it to completely uninstall and it is causing a lot of complications with my system? I cannot understand what is going on here. I have tried everything! It seems it isn't installed completely, so I can't actually use it, but I can't uninstall anything more than I already have and my systems still says it is there and it is reaking havoc on my system! I am glad to see that there a few other people out there that seems to be having the same problem that I have. I thought I was losing my mind for a while there.
ARGH!

Summary: Star Office Comments
Review: Basically an excellent program but with some irritating faults. The help menu is fragmented and unco-ordinated and it does have difficulty opening some MS documents. The biggest fault, I find, is that with labels it truncates the right hand row so that only half the labels are usable without a lot of adjusting. You can look in Page Preview for a label and all is correct but on printing all the right hand lettering is missing, also it sometimes insists on printing registration marks in the middle of the label, seemingly at random. Otherwise, excellent incorporation of spreadsheets into documents and very easy to use with excellent HTML editing.

Summary: Star Office: Better than Office for a Fraction of the Price
Review: I do all my presentations in Star Office for Linux. Now that I don't use MS Office, I boot my laptop into Windows less frequently, which is a very good thing. Star Office has more funtionality tha MS Office at a fraction of the cost. I highly recommend it.
