Summary: Simplified my paper life!
Review: I heard about Paperport from word of mouth. I've spent a number of hours researching the product, emailing tech support, and reading reviews from leading publications and users. It appears most users dogged technical support, so I took the test myself and emailed tech support to see if they support my HP all-in-one machine (OfficeJet G55). Support responded within 48 hours unlike the remarks I've read where they received poor tech support at unreasonable response times.

At any rate, I opened and loaded the software on my Toshiba XP enabled laptop. Installation was easy, and without reading the instructions manual, I was able to easily create folders and scan documents. PaperPort easily recognized my scanner.

In terms of software, this purchase has to rank among the most value received as my desk is becoming less of a paper pile and more of a desk. The quality of the scan is pretty good too, even capturing the creases of folded papers.

I highly recommend this product as the use and ROI of my scanner is in full swing with the use of PaperPort.

NOTE:
Recently downgraded to 2 stars due to software using 100% CPU and crashing my laptop. (laptop turns off) I have a 1.13GHZ P4 with 512MB RAM and the CPU utilization of the software is too heavy intensive!!

Summary: Major design flaw with this product
Review: I purchased this product and soon found out that it consumes 100% of the CPU capacity when running. Luckily I had Norton Utils to alert me. Otherwise, I probably would have burned up my CPU with any extended operation. I contacted Paperport and they acknowledged this problem, but offered no fix.

Summary: Get organized and paperless easily
Review: I upgraded to Paperport 8 when I will upgraded to Windows XP. I have been using Paperport for many years. I keep hard copies very few documents. Other than my tax return, pretty much everything else is filed electronically.

I originally used PaperPort to organize my scanned documents but have found that it allows me to have a virtually paperless office. With PaperPort, you can create folders and subfolders just as you would organize a file cabinet. You can scan your documents to these different folders. Even better, you can select PaperPort as your printer and print directly to PaperPort. For example if you purchased something online, you would "print" the receipt to your designated PaperPort folder and never have to deal with a sheet of paper. You can similarly store downloaded items from the Internet, such as a bill or bank statement. You can electronically file any document from any application that allows you to print.

It's easy-to-use interface also allows you to drag the scanned item to different applications you might have, such as your faxing software, Outlook, or Adobe Acrobat. You can also use it to save a file into jpeg or other formats.

I have not experienced the CPU drain that others describe. I am using PaperPort on a computer with 512 MB of RAM.

Summary: Email attachment problems with Windows XP Home
Review: I upgraded to PP v8.0 after I bought a Visioneer 8920 scanner. I cannot save scanned files to attach to e-mail. After three attempts to resolve the problem with technical support, I am no further along the road to sucess. I guess that it is time to return the program and start the fight for a refund.

Summary: An Extremely Useful Tool for Digital Documents
Review: I was introduced to Paperport at the CPA firm where I work. We use "paperless audit" software and our working papers are now exclusively digital. We use Paperport to convert many documents to digital format with a scanner. I loved the program so much I purchased a copy from Amazon.com to use at home. I am running Windows XP and have experienced few crashes or technical problems, either at home or at work.

When Paperport is installed, you can "print" any kind of graphic file into Paperport format. When in Paperport, you can then type information directly onto the document, save it, and print it out. This is very useful for tax and other forms downloaded from the web. I have used Paperport to fill out a voter registration form and payroll tax returns that I downloaded from internet sites.

Another great feature of Paperport is that you can combine several different scanned documents into a single document, which become "pages" in the digital file. I love to use Paperport in conjunction with Adobe Acrobat Writer; Paperport is great for editing a digital document, which can then be converted to Acrobat (pdf) format (but you must have Acrobat Writer installed too). Acrobat documents can be read by Acrobat Reader, a widely used platform that is free, and can be more easily accessed by clients and colleagues.

Paperport is a very useful tool for accountants, attorneys and other professionals who may want to edit and store documents in digital format. But it's also great for home use for the same purpose. Imagine storing your files on a Compact Disc rather than in a file cabinet. I highly recommend it.

Summary: PaperPort patch available
Review: I've noticed several reviews here that comment on lack of support for Windows XP and a bug related to CPU usage. I just wanted to let folks know that there is now a patch available on scansoft.com that fixes these issues.

I use PaperPort 8 on Windows XP Pro and Home on a daily basis without any serious problems.

Summary: Missing features.
Review: Missing features are only minor if you have never used them. PaperPort Deluxe 7.0, which I bought only two weeks ago with a new OneTouch 9000 USP scanner, lacks the windows/settings/printers print drivers that all versions since 5.1 had. From any application that supported printing, one could click on file/print, select the Paperport printer, and print directly to the Paperport desktop. This was invaluable for filing online orders and invoices alongside the scanned paper that related to the same transaction.

It is simply gone: not in the manual, not on the installation disks. It is also not listed as a feature of the Deluxe 8.0 being offered here (it may be a feature, but they haven't said so). Actually, current offerings are sorely lacking in any real detail, puffery aside.

This is a shame because the Paperport system is a very good one, which I have used for years, and recommended to many. My most recent upgrade was occasioned because my 6100 scanner was declared a Win 2000 legacy. The new 9000 scanner is great, but what good are software upgrades if they don't continue to support the features we need and expect?

Summary: This is the best Document Management software on the market.
Review: Paperport has all the functionalties you need for document management, it also has the best optical characters recognition on the market.
Either for home or office Paperport is must. You will really go paperless with it.

Summary: Version 8 is buggy with XP
Review: PaperPort has been in this segment since the beginning. I install paperport many times a week in conjunction with other products. This product, overall, is excellent but the current version is still a work in progress from my perspective.

Version 8 does not work consistently with XP and they have no patches nor respond to this issue via email. Version 8 is also unstable with W2K. I have not tried it with W95-98 O/S family.

Version 7 (with patch) works with W2k and is stable. It misses a few features that v8 has, but it works consistently.

Forget this product if you use Terminal Server. These comments are based on my own experience and may be different from the experience of others. I use this product daily and recommend it.

Summary: BEWARE, read this before purchasing this product!
Review: The PaperPort Deluxe 8.0 program looked good, ...

HOWEVER,

A) After installing the program, cannot open any Word 2002 documents. Get "not enough memory" errors (512 MB on that machine). After UN-Installing PaperPort, Word runs fine (ie. no errors and open all docs fine).

B) When trying to open a single 50 Kilobyte Adobe Acrobat PDF file on a network drive, the program sits there for approximately 5 minutes then displays an error "Ut Oh - Cannot Open This File." Our test file was two pages of text only using Times Roman font. No images.

C) ScanPort supposedly offers A 30 day money back guarantee. After using the form on their site ... we received a reply [that] had a phone number to call for an RMA. We called, they asked us to fax our receipt, other info for an RMA. It has been two weeks now and we have not yet received our RMA or instructions on how to return. The last tech support person I spoke to said they had an extremely large amount of email and phone requests to process.
