Summary: Worked ok for me, former Turbo Tax user for 5+ years
Review: Heard about the c-dilla issue from my friend at work, and my 80 year old aunt. So I decided to try Tax cut. It didn't handle my stock purchase plan as easy as Turbo tax, and I didn't have any ISO's this year, so no issue with stock options. The rest of it went well, no major complaints. I have been impressed with Turbo-Tax's SPP and Stock option handling over the last couple of years. I missed that on Tax Cut. I bought the software, did my taxes, and efile'd all in one day. My wife was shocked. It did get faked out on my big refund of two years ago that I put off, it said to go to publication 525, but didn't say what page of this multi page pdf file. (I hate PDF's) I found it after 5-10 frustrating minutes. Free Tax got it right, although it assumed the worst case. Next year I migh go either way, I'm sure Turbo Tax will learn their lesson from this year.
No spy ware for me. I just wanted to send Turbo-Tax a shot over the bow.

Summary: TaxCut made a $3300 error on my taxes
Review: As with many others, I bought TaxCut because of the spyware issues with TurboTax. What a mistake! TaxCut misinterprets a fairly important tax law change from 2001 which allows employees to contribute to both a tax-deferred 403(b) and 457(b) plan. The tax law allows contributions up to $11,000 in 2002 to each of these plans, for a total of $22,000. TaxCut incorrectly added back $11,000 to my income because it believed I was making an "excess contribution" to these plans ... which makes a $3,300 difference to my tax bill. TurboTax interprets the law correctly ... so I'm spending another $... to go back to it.

Summary: Don't buy it if you moved out of state.
Review: I tried Tax Cut instead of Turbo Tax this year and was terribly frustrated. If you have moved from one state to another, yet have W2's to file from the first state, Tax Cut changes your residence state to the state of the employer on your first W2. If you change the residence state back, it changes the employer's state. Their Technical Support was unaware of this problem and were unable to help solve it. I finally fixed it by listing as the first W2 one from an employer in my state of current residence.

To make matters worse, I bought the State program. If you don't do the above fix -- still unknown to Tax Cut -- the program won't recognize that your W2's show you paid any taxes in the state of prior residence.

The final strike came when I discovered Tax Cut State will not allow me to file electronically with my state of prior residence. I can only do it with my state of current residence. Again, I called their Technical Support. I was told that's the way the software is designed. When I pleaded that they neglected to include this information in the software ads and packaging, it was explained to me that the readme file included this information, as if that should have informed me of the restriction before I bought the software.

This software is quirky, buggy, and unprofessional. Don't buy it.

Summary: Stick with Turbotax
Review: I have used turbotax for the past few years but switched to taxcut because of product activation. Well, what a mistake! I had numerous problems with software and tried to contact technical support. Standard answer, contact tax advisor for 19.95. Then after e-filing for many years with turbotax, I cannot with taxcut since I live in New Jersey and work in New York. The tax software cannot figure out that my income is taxed in both states and doubles my federal income on the New Jersey 1040 form. As such I owe NJ $2000 instead of my $600 refund. To correct this, I have to override the software which prevents e-file. DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE STICK WITH TURBOTAX!!

Summary: No customer support
Review: I have been using Turbo Tax for many years, but because of the spyware installed with it and because of the reviews I read of this product, I decided to try Tax Cut this year. It specifically states in all the information that you can import information from last years turbo tax form into tax cut....but guess what. It doesnt work. I wrote customer support and asked them about the probelem and how to fix it....and their response was ..."I understand your frustration. I recommend that you update Turbo Tax."

It sure doesnt sound as if they want my business. I will probably use the product this year because I have already paid for it.....but next year, I doubt it. And I definitely would not recommend it.

Summary: First time tax software user - makes tax filing easy
Review: I have always done my taxes by hand without any difficulties. But because each year I keep getting uncomfortably close to having to fill out the AMT form (6251), I decided to try out a tax software package this year. As a 14-year user of Quicken, I naturally thought of Turbo Tax first. But after reading the horrendous reviews of TurboTax and its oppressive activation scheme, I decided on Tax Cut. I was not sorry. The program installed flawlessly, but it did take about a half hour to download the product updates via 56k modem. (Maybe this is my justification to upgrade to DSL.) It did take a little adjustment to the interview concept but after awhile I got into the swing of it. Also, due to memory limitations of my printer, I needed to print each form individually. But I have no major gripes against the software. It made my federal tax filing easy. Next year I plan to buy both the federal and state versions and let it do both of my returns.

So I have no hesitations recommending Tax Cut. In fact, I recommended it to a friend at work who had been a TurboTax user. He switched to Tax Cut and had no problems importing his Turbo Tax file from last year.

One editorial comment: I did not file electronically because I am uncomfortable sending my personal financial information through a third party - even H&R Block. Until the IRS provides the capability to file electronically directly to the IRS, I will continue to mail in paper forms.

Summary: hasta luego TurboTax
Review: As a customer of TurboTax for many years, I was really put off by the restrictions that their new security system imposed on my use of the software. When I buy software, I expect to be able to reinstall it if upgrade my computer or harddrive, or to put it on several computers that I frequently use (and YES, maybe even PRINT from either of them) not to have to pay again, and again...
Good thing I read Amazon.com customer reviews before purchasing the software or I would have been burnt. That TurboTax would install a permanently running monitor program on your computer without informing you, and worse yet to leave it there after uninstalling TurboTax, is deplorable (NO, I don't accept that I need to go to their website and download an uninstall program in order to get it off my computer).
When a company starts thumbing its nose at its loyal customers like this, its inviting them to walk. Count me in that group. Hasta luego Turbo Tax.

Summary: ByeBye TurboTax
Review: Switched to TaxCut this year. Easy to use. Similiar user interface as TurboTax (Interview or Form mode). For simple returns, either TaxCut or TurboTax would do. so price is my #1 factor and I got this for free after rebate.

Summary: H&R Block should stay out of electronc/online taxes
Review: I would have rated this "0" if it was available. Below is a copy of a letter I sent to H&R Block. I hope this review saves somebody else from the problems I have had with H&R Block.

Since H&R Block is always offering advice I would like to take some time to offer them some.

1) You should stay out of the electronic/online tax service. I have used your online browser in the past to file taxes and was unable to complete my taxes after spending 2 hours filling in forms with information only to find out that a form I needed was not available online. Then this weekend I spent another 2 hours doing my Federal taxes, using your TaxCut software, and at the end I could not E-File because of an error message about "Cannot find server_socket_windows" or something like that. That was with my Cable modem. Then I tried a dial up ISP and got the same error message. Then I called your tech support (used that phrase losely), and was informed it was "probably" my computer that was the problem and thanked me for calling. Lot of help that was. Final solution was to print out my tax return and mail them. Gee, why did I not just do that in the first place and forget about paying for your software?
2) Even your computer information that I had to fill out above did not have Windows XP as an option for OS's. How long has XP been out?
3) I was not happy with Intuit putting "spyware" on my computer so I tried your software thinking it would have some privacy. After this "second" attempt at using online H&R Block products you can bet that I will "NEVER" be back.

Not that one unhappy customer makes a difference to you but you can bet that I will share my experiences with my friends.

Thank you for "my" troubles,

Summary: TaxCut 2002 Is Very Right
Review: This is my first time using TaxCut. In prior years I used Turbo Tax but this year before I bought I read the reviews at Amazon.com and decided I didn't want to go through the same hassles that others have with Turbo Tax this year and decided to switch to TaxCut. I was worried about trying a new tax program but it really was very easy to use, just as easy as Turbo Tax. I can't comment about the problems with Turbo Tax this year because I didn't buy it but hopefully TaxCut will not repeat the same mistake Turbo Tax is making. Turbo Tax has lost my business and probably for many years to come because I don't switch software programs every year if it is working....unless TaxCut gives me a reason to switch.
