Summary: WISH I HAD STAYED ON 4.0
Review: Unlike others, Microsoft Works is the software for me. I use it for everything. Nothing offered by the more capable software has any value for the work that I do. In fact, I find WORD to be so complicated at times that it is just not useful. Every time I think I'll step up I always come back to Works. It is the best software for those who need software that is easy to use, easy to load, and provides for uncomplicated success.

Summary: WISH I HAD STAYED ON 4.0
Review: VERY CLUMSY TO TRY TO USE DATABASE WITH MAIL MERGE FOR A WORD PROCESSOR FILE. UNLESS YOU WANT TO WORK/CREATE WHAT THEY HAVE ALREADY DONE FOR YOU, THE WHOLE PROGRAM IS VERY LIMITING. THEIR NEW GALLERY IS JUST FONTS AND COLORS (HO HUM) WE ALREADY HAD THAT. TO MAKE IT WORSE, WHEN QUESTIONED THEIR TECH SUPPORT AGREED WITH ME AND REFERED ME TO A TOLL-FREE NUMBER FOR A REFUND AND ANOTHER NUMBER TO TRY TO GET 4.0/4.5; THOSE PEOPLE CLAIM HE WAS WRONG AND SAID IF I WANTED TO TRY TO BUY 4.0/4.5 TO CALL A WAREHOUSE (THEY GAVE ME THE NUMBER); THE WAREHOUSE HAS CLOSED.

SO MUCH FOR TECH SUPPORT; BY THE WAY THE FIRST TECH SUPPORT GUY SAID THEIR WEBSITE HAD A DOWNLOAD PATCH TO CONVERT THEIR 6.0 FILES BACK TO 4.0'S. I GOTTA FIND 4.0 TO BUY FIRST. WHILE I WAS THEIR I FOUND ANOTHER PATCH TO HELP FIX SOME OF THE DATABASE PROBLEM, IT WORKS, BUT JUST A SMALL PATCH FOR A VERY DISAPPOINTING PURCHASE. DONT' WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.

ARE WE GETTING TO THE POINT WHERE THEY ARE TRYING TOO HARD. MAYBE SOME FRESH NEW IDEAS ARE NEEDED; HERE'S ONE - GET UP FROM THE DESK AND TRY LOOKING OUTSIDE, TAKE A BREATH AND RELAX. IF IT AIN'T BROKE - DON'T FIX IT.

THANKS FOR LETTING ME AIR.

Summary: Microsoft Works 6.0? Try calling it Microsoft Office Lite!
Review: Well, well, well. Microsoft does it again! They saturate the market with a relatively third party word processor compared to Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Office. I actually got this program with Microsoft Works Suite 2001, which I will also review. Now, this program may work well, but not as good as Works version 4.5a. Some of the disadvantages include the fact that Microsoft Word is its default word processor, and it includes an almost completely useless program called Mircosoft Portfolio. Also, the communications tool in Works 4.5a may have been saccharine, but at least it worked. Also, you must remember that Works 4.5a was released in 1995, when the Internet was still a pretty new thing. But, that's beside the point. I just think Microsoft Works should have maintained it's Works 4.5a program rather than build in a whole lot of useless features. If you want a great Word alternative, try Correl, or Sun's StarOffice 5.1.

Summary: A step backwards
Review: With Works Micosoft makes a step backwards because it does not no longer support celprotection. Imagine a spreadsheet of 10 pages with hundreds of formulas and with no celprotection.

Summary: Works 6.0 OK but not quite what I expected
Review: Works 6.0 is a decent value for the money. However, I was disappointed that documents that I previously prepared using a password with Word will not open. I had expected Works 6.0 to have a full Word program but apparently it does not. The word "password" does not even appear in the Help index.
