Summary: Best Office Suite Out There
Review: O.K. I've been using the Internet for MANY years. Many. Before the Web was. And I've used every office suite imaginable, from the old stuff, before there were suites, to all the new eXPensive ones that are out there. StarOffice 6 provides a great user experience. You have lots of functions and capabilities at your fingertips that other providers bury in dialog boxes. Even some of the features that I've seen in StarOffice actually appeared their first, and were inherited by other manufacturers in ther products. After having been using Lotus software, Microsoft software, and a bevy of other provider's tools, I can safely say that StarOffice 6 is a true gem that is definitely worth the price. Although Sun has moved SO away from it's free roots, I support them if it means it's going to improve the product. Version 6 is heads and shoulders above the previous version. With the integrated features that SO provides, it's compatibility with MS Office 2000 and XP, and it's price tag, this program is worth every penny. Any downs you ask? Well, sometimes the software does seem to be a bit of a resource hog. Obviously, since it's not Microsoft, you may experience not as quite of a tight integration with a Windows system. If you're using Linux or Mac, this is the only real choice I'd consider. For the PC platform, if you are looking for a good, solid, feature-filled office package go this route. If you want 100% MS Office compatibility, I wouldn't leap just yet. Granted, it opens documents created in Word very well, BUT sometimes there's a few places that it messes things up. Easily fixed, mind you, but you have to be careful. Need a great suite at a low price and can handle the small conversion glitches, go with this software. It will be a little bit of a learning curve to get the handle, but it'll be worth it.

Summary: Definately a good buy
Review: StarOffice 6.0 is a great office application package and definately a good buy. I've switched from using Microsoft Office and saved money while still being able to use all my old Microsoft Office documents. I can even continue to save them in MS format so I can exchange them with people who haven't switched to StarOffice yet. As long as you remember that this is not an MS Office clone but a very similar product (e.g., there are differences in menus that you need a few clicks to get used to) you won't be disappointed.

Summary: sight unseen
Review: I am going to purchase this program as I am unhappy with microsoft's licensing program. Hopefully, StarOffice will out perform MSOffice 2000.

Summary: A good product
Review: I had previously used both StarOffice 5.2 (definitely *not* my favorite) and the beta release of 6.0 as well as Applix Office Suite (now Applix Anyware), Word Perfect, KWord, ABIword, and of course MS Office (under VMware on Linux). Overall I would rank SO 6.0 very favorably against its competition. I primarily use these products to do technical reports on Linux and Solaris, and while they all have their relative strengths, I would rank SO6.0 and Applix at the top of the pile.

The installation was not difficult, and shortly after finishing the install I was able to open and work with documents in a variety of formats - Mac, MSWord, RTF, and html to start with - without *ever* seeing anything even approaching the well-known blue screen of death. The spreadsheet handled some fairly complex juggling without a whimper - including one scatterplot of several thousand data points. Overall, SO's feature set is fairly complete (although I *still* haven't been able to figure out how to maintain a uniform, specified row height on a table inserted into a text document), and I have found redesigned user interface to be sleeker and far less cumbersome than in SO5.2.

On the down side, I *had* hoped it would be a free download from Sun ... sigh ... but I guess you can't have everything.

On the plus side, I can now use the same app on Linux, Solaris (Sparc OR Intel), Win32 and just about every platform I have to use. Definitely recommended.

Summary: Kudos to Sun Microsystems!
Review: This is the most robust, cross-platform Office suite on the market. Sun has really addressed the needs of users who need a productivity suite that can run on multiple operating systems such as Solaris, Linux, and Windows. Also, StarOffice is an affordable alternative to Microsoft Office, without any significant gaps in feature and functionality. No longer am I locked into using a productivity tool that only runs on a Windows/Intel machine! Thank you Sun!

Summary: Time to erase the Microsoft Office suite
Review: Having used the predecessor 5.2 and worked with the beta I have found no issue with this product. This is a replacement for the whole error riddled MS Office suite, finally. Much better performance than 5.2.

Go for it run it on Window, linux or solaris ...trully portable (the MAC version should be available soon from openoffice.org)

Summary: Truly amazing office suite
Review: I had been a user of MS office product before moving on to StarOffice. The latest version 6.0 is amazing. Migration from my previous office documents to StarOffice has been seamless. Performance had been an issue with StarOffice 5.2 because of the heavyweight integrated desktop, but no more with 6.0. The ability of being able to save the data in a non-proprietary XML format is valuable, very thoughtful of the creators. The ability to be able to run it across multiple platforms like Linux, Windows and Solaris is very promising. I am truly impressed with the quality of the product and would recommend for anyone looking for alternatives to MS office.

Summary: StarOffice is a top notch product
Review: I have been using StarOffice for almost two years now and I have found it to be comparable if not better than most of the office suites available on the market. Of course the standard by which all other packages are measured is Microsoft Office. I would have to say that StarOffice competes very well against MS Office and does so at less than a quarter of the cost.

Over the course of the course of using StarOffice, I have become as adept at creating quality documents as one could expect from an office suite like MS Office, Lotus SmartSuite or Corel Offce. To be honest, I would have to give a slight edge to MS Office, but StarOffice is certainly a competitive product and is definitely the product to choose if you need a top notch office suite that runs on multiple platforms.

In my opinion, spend [the money] for StarOffice, get 95% of what you get from MS Office, take the money you saved and spend it on something else worthwhile.

Summary: Great Software
Review: I had used StarOffice 5.2a before and was really disgusted by it even though it enable me to view Microsoft documents over UNIX boxes. However, 6.0 is a **major** improvement over 5.2a and it's performance even on a PC is amazing. It doesn't emulate desktop and offers a fast,fully-featured Document Processing application. There is no comparison between 5.2a and 6.0 version of StarOffice. It looks like and works like a commercial application!
I found no formatting problems between Microsoft Word documents opened in StarOffice.(i.e basic one, not containing any macros etc.)
I would recommend it any one who want to use a fully featured word processing applicaton without any unused bell and whistles of MS-Office.

Summary: An amazing upgrade from 5.2 and a real competitor to Office
Review: With support for MS Office XP files and now that it is integrated into your native desktop, this new offering from Sun will go along way towards putting the words value back into Office Productivity. It includes a very powerful word processor, in some cases more powerful than MS:Word. Also included is a presentation and spreadsheet tools which are completely integrated. I think the best part is you get to install the software on up to 5 computers.
