Summary: Don't Buy IL State TurboTax
Review: All the Amazon.com reviews seem to agree that Turbotax State is a bad product. It is!

I used TurboTax State for Illinois. When I tried to file electronically, TurboTax rejected the filing because of an entry on line 9 of IL-1040. It's true that you can't file IL-1040 electronically if there are certain subtractions on that line. BUT, TurboTax entered a 0.00 on that line, then read it as a number and refused to electronically file. There are no subtractions on that line. I was able to file the same information on ILtax.com. It was acceptable, but not to TurboTax.

The IL State web site works fine to file taxes, but I had to enter a lot of information all over again--just what I bought Turbotax State to avoid.

When I went on line and the phone, I got a complete runaround--just as you've read about in other reviews.

So, I bought a product that has no function, but TurboTax won't be responsible.

Summary: New York Commuter / New Jersey Resident Still Wrong
Review: ATTENTION INTUIT: A BAD free state download is worse than no state download.

Unfortunately, this year's version still does not know how to back out taxes paid to NY State (where I work) and apply them to New Jersey (where I live).

Will you guys just fix this already?!?!?!!!!!

Summary: Piece of cake!
Review: Flawless and no problems. I have switched to Intuit because prior programs (Tax Cut and Tax Act) would not allow me to e-file my state return (Arizona), because they did not contain a form I needed for a state credit. Turbo Tax solved that issue last year and this year as well. State program installs with a blink of the eye, and complements Turbo Tax Deluxe beautifully. This was only my second year with Intuit, but plan to 3-peat next year.

Summary: correcting information in state tax form not possible
Review: I did my federal tax with turbotax delux and my state tax also with turbotax.
I made some errors entering information. The federal form allowed me to make corrections after I was done.
However, the state interview denies me access. Maybe I need to start all over or do it by hand.
The State program is grap. I send an email to the company but did not get any reply.

Summary: Defects in this software
Review: I had used Turbo Tax for several years but surely there is a better program available. The program with the State download "free" had glitches in it and would not setup. Contacting Customer Service was a difficult ordeal to acquire a replacement per instructions within the software. After waiting a very long time on the phone to talk to someone they argued that I buy it even though it came with my program as a "free download" and then even the replacement download was difficult to setup and expired after 8 hrs. Customer Service does not want to hear they have defects in their software even after a very long wait on the phone to talk to them. I cannot recommend Turbo Tax Software and will try something different next year.

Summary: Turbo Tax State- not as good as the Turbo Tax Federal
Review: I think that Turbo tax federal is pretty good. However, the state versions are really not very good. The state versions import some info directly from the federal form, but then ask you to type in a lot of information from the federal form as well (i.e. "type in form 1040 line 10 here" ect.) I don't understand why this isn't directly imported from the federal forms for you. In addition, where there is a lot of support/ help questions on the turbo tax program for the federal interview, the same is not true at all for the state interviews. It is really not any easier or more understandable than just doing it yourself. In fact, if you are a part-year resident in two states like I was, be VERY careful. Not only is it confusing with very little info on turbo taxes' part, sometimes Turbo tax fills in the wrong info and Won't let you override it with the correct info. For instance, with my part-year status in Massachusetts, I am only supposed to enter business deductions from my time in Massachusetts. However, Turbo tax entered business deductions from my entire year, and wouldn't let me override this. I'm ok with having used turbo tax for state mostly because it double checked some things for me and looked nice all typed up. However, even more so than with the federal program, you need to double check your state forms by doing the entire thing over by hand as well. I will probably use this program again next year as I will only be in one State- but I'll still definitely double check it by hand!!

Summary: Not Multistate!
Review: I was also very disappointed to find (only after I had purchased and installed TurboTax state) that it is only valid for one state! The only reason I purchased this product was to be able to file in the three states we lived in this past year. Better labeling would have led to less frustration

Summary: No technical support
Review: I wonder why TurboTax expect us to trust them in filing our taxes when they overlook basic simple software functionality.

I installed the wrong state by mistake and was unable to correct this (not a feature) even if federal and state was deinstalled and the home directory deleted. The online support library does not address this. Support only provides ability to purchase the product again.

I strongly advise against buying this product.

Summary: If you TurboTax for Federal, you have to try this!
Review: If you use TurboTax to assist you with your Federal income tax return and haven't yet tried the State version, you have to try it. It is definitely worth it!

The State version will automatically read in everything you've already done for the Federal version - which cuts down your time immensely! You have to answer a few State-specific questions, like your county of residence - but you'll be done with the whole thing in about 5 to 10 minutes. Well worth the price to save me that much time and hassle!

A word of caution, however: Although it is labeled "multistate" you actually only get to use it for one state for the license fee; if you want more than one state you will need to call Intuit, pay another fee, and they'll give you a code for the next state.

Summary: Turbotax is a rip off
Review: Last year they have home depreciation in deluxe 2002. This year, with deluxe 2003, you're forced to make a $40 upgrade.

DONT BUY. INTUIT IS TRYING TO RIP PEOPLE OFF.
