Summary: Beware that program won't suddenly stop!!
Review: I own an older version of QuickBooks Pro which suddenly stopped and asked me to re-enter my registration number. I had no idea where the old box with the registration number was. A phone call to QuickBooks tech support informed me that QuickBooks can be only run a certain number of times before one has to re-enter the registration code. This was for "marketing purposes". They refused to give me my old code as my version was "no longer supported". However, when I bought a [costly] upgrade, they suddenly were able to give me a code to let me use my old version...Suddenly stop the customer's software from working, customer cannot recover any data, refuse support, demand an upgrade, then open the software up again.

Will newer QuickBooks programs suddenly stop working a few years from now?

Summary: Quickbooks Pro
Review: I purchased Quickbooks in 1995 and subsequently upgraded to the Pro 5.0 version over a few years. I enjoyed the program and touted it's benfits. I upgraded again last summer to Quickbooks Pro 2001 for no other reason than to keep up to date. Recently when ordering the new tax table updates, we were informed that they were no longer available for the previous modest cost and that we had to subscribe to automatic updates for a fee....I am very displeased and can no longer recommend this program.

Summary: I purchased A Product From Inuit Software and Scanning
Review: I purchased the software at Stapples (Hamilton Ontario) the software with the cashbox and scanning software for barcodes came to $4,000.00 now I did not know that the suport was for 30 days and that after that I would have to pay over $130.00 per moth (yes I did get a credit for $800.00 not in cheque) but for technical support and after those $800.00 are over my staff told me that we have to pay for it (I was amazed) that a product that cost over $4,000.00 does not even have more extended technical support, correct me if I am wrong but when you purchase a computer and some computers are dirt cheap lets say $1,500.00 you would get technical support for a year or sometimes more. I am not impressed at all with there so called "customer service" I am in the process of opening more stores and I will go look at other providers for software and scanning bar code mechanism.

Summary: Still the king!
Review: I've ben a QuickBooks user for years. I have owned restaurants, various retail businesses and a property management firm. For an all-purpose financial management tool, QuickBooks can't be beat. In addition, Intuit has the most comprehensive on-line troubleshooting guide I have ever found on the internet. It gets a 4 out of 5 stars due to its lack of telephone support (at least free telephone support for the first 60 days of ownership). As good as the on-line database is, some things that need troubleshooting require a phone call.

Summary: Used to be good but now...
Review: If you have an older version of this software I would stick with it. I wish I could go back every time I use this new one, but it's too late for me. The "improvements" are minimal and mostly useless and there are lots of "unimprovements", which they tend to do every time they upgrade.

If you do not use Quickbooks and are a potential first time customer, go elsewhere. Research other software, like M.Y.O.B. or others. I'm not endorsing MYOB - I have never used it. It's just another similiar product to look into. [In my opinion] Intuit has ruined Quickbooks and [I feel] their tech support and customer support are the worst in the industry.

Be warned!

Summary: GREAT Improvements by QBooks Guru !! Time to UPgrade !!
Review: IF you haven't upgraded your QuickBooks software, NOW is the time to do it !Between the subtle differences and the innovative ones, you can get so much more from this package.I am a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor in Southern California and Beta-tested the 2002 software, so I DO know the improvements made.

There are 4 desktop versions..QBooks Basic, QBooks Pro, QBooks Premium and Accountant's QBooks Premium. Obviously I will be using the Accountant's version, and with this, I will be able to do so much more than before. For one, if you have had QBooks for a few years, you do know how slow it can get with entries..well, NOW we can close off years FINALLY, and store them.A BIG PLUS is the Remote Access: When you have a problem,I can access your QBooks online (with YOUR permission, naturally) and fix the problem, or we can discuss it right then and there, no matter how many miles apart we are ! I'm NOW able to set up, and maintain ANY client's books, no matter what state they have their business. Also look for the improvements for time tracking, job costs, e-mailing statements etc.

QuickBooks now integrates with a TON of software applications specific to industry--go look on their site. QBooks also has a Point of Sale software package for retail..and for construction, they have teamed up with Master Builders, just to name two.

YES, they also have raised their prices..do I think it's worth it? I am NEVER fond of raised prices, but with all the significant changes, I do see why. With any new upgrade, I'm sure there will be a few problems, but the techs will patch them, as they always have. I have also had complaints about their tech support help...but normally I can answer all my client's questions.

Frankly, QuickBooks has basically become the standard for small business..it's the ONLY accounting software I do install for my clients now. ...

Summary: The Money Pit
Review: Intuit sees selling software as the first set in their revenue stream. When you buy the software you become hostage to Intuit's very manipulative marketing and seemingly endless offers and services. Many of the features you buy with the software only operate with a monthly subscription. The 2002 release is buggy but you get no help from the very pricey tech support without a credit card! Don't help this corporation remain the biggest player in the Small business accounting market. Intuit makes Microsoft seem like a public charity.

Summary: If you like fustration you'll love this
Review: Quickbooks 2002 is a halfway decent accounting program for small business. Unfortunetly Intuits ridiculus company policy of releasing buggy software and then charging you for them to fix it is most fustrating. Then there are the yearly upgrades that you have to pay for. No , you don't HAVE to pay for a new version each year... it's just that your old version stops working if you have to reinstall it. It will then ask to for a special activation key that you can only get if you ring them up and then fill in a 10 page document( and get it signed by a j.p!!!).
When you vent your fustration and anger, the ever so helpful phone support person will suggest that it would just be easier to upgrade to the latest version for a large sum of money. Yeah, thanks...

Summary: Dont buy this if you have NT and IE 5 or better
Review: The product is good, no doubt. The support that comes with it is poor.
With 2002 and NT workstation you need to have only Internet Explorer 4(IE4), because the install of IE5 puts in files that are incompatible with the QB2002 program.
It took 3 hours to install the program with research on the internet and on quickbooks site. If this is the version for 2002 why are they still using files from the browser install from 1999?(IE4).
The phone in tech support does not even include install help for the program when you first buy it. Good luck with it.

Summary: Don't waste your money
Review: There are reasons to buy Quickbooks. For instance it's a lot cheaper than accounting software for professionals. But why not buy it on Ebay for a fraction of the price from one of the many dissatisfied users trying to get rid of it ?

I recently upgraded my business from Quicken home & business 98 to Quickbooks. I've always hated Quicken for it's array of annoying idiosyncrasies but I'm now locked in with years of transactions. I've spent several days worth of time on Quickbooks, so I'm no expert. However I've run into problem after problem trying to get my accounting practices set up. For instance it simply won't let me enter transactions directly into my foreign account register, despite the help file telling me that I can. And my invoices come out with missing lines and text.

The real problem though, is that these bugs aren't Intuit's problem. They're Intuit's profit. Tech support is not available without paying. Strangely, searching the online help gave me no hits for my problems.

I cannot compare this product with Microsoft Money since I haven't tried that one. Perhaps Quickbooks Pro is still your best bet, but don't pay full price !
