Summary: Quality Control Problem
Review: The first viking reader I received had a defective eject button. The second reader would read some PC cards but not others. The third reader refused to read a second card after the first was removed. I definately like that the drive treats PC cards like removable media (with no starting and stopping of card services) and if you are a lucky or persistant buyer and they ship you a drive that works this would be a great deal.

Summary: Excellent product once installed.
Review: The product does work as advertised, however; I had a difficult time installing the drivers during the setup process. I'm running Windows ME, and noticed that the manufacture placed the drivers in the windows "inf" directory, not the system directory which is generally the default. So, after manually pointing to the proper directory the product installed without fault.

The product was recognized as a "General Purpose USB Hub" and created two new drive letters. This allows tremendous versatility. You can open and edit pictures directly on the "smart media" memory card or simply copy them to your local hard drive.

Overall, I would recommend this product to friends, but gave it a 3 because the manufacture needs better support (i.e. FAQ pages) and automated installation.

Summary: Super fast, super easy
Review: Works great with Olympus, Kodak, etc. ALL digital camera flash cards. Simply remove the memory card from your camera, slap it in to the slot and presto... seconds later your images are on your system.

Setup was a snap too. Highly recommend! Much easier than using your camera for uploading pics to your computer.

Summary: Works excellent
Review: Well, I find it hard to believe that anyone had problems w/ this product. I run Win95 on a slow (266mhz) computer and it installed and runs flawlessly. It takes less than a second to download 8 megs of pics on to the computer. Very good investment at a very good price. So if you're hesitant to use this with Windows 95, don't be...it works excellent.

Summary: fast fast fast
Review: i'm using the intelliflash for my olympus d460zoom which does not have a usb interface. but nothing could be easier or faster than removing the smart media card from the camera, slapping it into the intelliflash and copying the pics onto my hard drive.

experientially the same as using any other ide drive on your computer... fast fast fast.

fast and easy setup too. load software first. reboot. connect. viola. great.

did i mention it was fast?

Summary: There's got to be a better system
Review: Struggled with this creature for two days to try to get it to work. Crashed my system repeatedly until I finally gave up. The instructions sound simple , which this should be but none of the icons or windows decribed in the manual would come up. I had to reconfigure my computer several times. I packed this item up and sent it back. If there is a magic way to get this to work as I have read in other reviews, I don't have the time or the patience to put up with it . I know there are other brands that are reliable and functional(eg ScanDisk) but these weren't available at the the time I bought the Viking unit. Cheaper isn't always better!

Summary: A good product; needs better support
Review: After trying to get my IBM laptop to download pictures from my Nikon digital camera via the serial connection and discovering that the two units were incompatible, I decided to buy this card reader. It works well, but I have to follow a particular procedure or else I get a Windows 98 protection error or, barring that problem, the computer refuses to read the card.

1) Make sure the computer's USB hub has been disconnected before shutting down.

2) Plug in the USB hub (but keep the card reader unplugged for now).

3) Power up the peripherals, including the USB hub.

4) Boot up the computer.

5) Plug card into the card reader.

6) Plug the card reader into the USB hub.

7) Watch as Windows becomes confused because it also has a Zip drive attached to the hub.

8) Copy the pictures off the card in the reader.

9) Unplug the reader from the hub.

I had to do something similar when I tried using the reader on a Mac G3 tower.

It's a rigamarole, but it works. When I talked to the folks at Viking, they said it was a software problem (the usual contention made by hardware manufacturers--and vice versa) and said they couldn't help me.

So, it's basically a good unit, but Viking needs to work harder on compatibility and support.

Summary: Does not support standby mode per viking tech-sup
Review: I like the reader and it works well and is easy to install. However, once installed, my Windows 2000 system can no longer go into standby mode. I emailed Viking about this and I did get a very prompt reply, unfortunately not what I wanted to hear:

At 01/11/2001 03:16 PM we wrote - The IntelliFlash does not support suspend or standby modes. It is seen by Windows as a removable drive and therefore is constantly being monitored. As such, it cannot be suspended. I'm sorry, but there is no work-around other than unplugging the reader.

They seem to be wanting to blame Windows and I know its not a windows limitation but a problem with their driver. Hopefully they'll fix it sometime. Until then, I'd recommend shopping around before buying this reader.

Summary: All things considered, pretty good
Review: I'm using this product with my Canon ELPH digital camera. It is really convenient to be able to pop a flash card in and download all the pictures at once. I only have a few nits...For some reason, the drive doesn't work if there are other items plugged into USB ports at the same time. The other thing to keep in mind is that if your camera has a USB connection to begin with, the pictures will download pretty fast, so you don't have to worry that much about battery life (translation: your money may be better spent on higher capacity compact flash cards). Other than that, it's a great product.
