Summary: Good but not perfect, does not fully support Backup Exec.
Review: I am the Director of Technology of a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider and buy close to a Millon Dollars worth of hardware every year.

I was introduced to this product at a Windows NT Users group meeting and the sales pitch sounded good.

The stated speed and features seemed very good for the price. And we were offered the drives at a very special price.

I have found the drive to be good, but far from perfect. We use these drives and HP 12/24 DAT drives and now the HP 20/40 DAT drives. The HP Drives cost more but maybe worth it if you can't live with the following bugs in the OnStream product.

The product does NOT support the Disaster recovery option of Veritas (Seagate) Backup Exec. So for true mission crital applications this is a deal killer. Also we have had to upgrade the drives flash bios at least 4 times now. Also the stated speed and the "REAL World" speed don't seem to match up, again the HP DAT drives seems to record and verify faster, regardless of the marketing pitch. My other complaint is the cost of the tapes, the drive is reasobaly priced but the tapes are very expensive even in quanity.

If this is for a small business or home user with a large amount of data and you are also very price sensitive, this may be an OKAY choice. However, IF you decide to buy this drive DON'T bother to get version with the Veritas software, the supplied software is adequate for this type of Non-Mission critical install.

In the end, after @18 months of having these drives along side HP DAT drives, I only buy the HP DAT's now.

Summary: Onstream Backup
Review: The drive is good, but if it breaks you are in trouble because Onstream is now OUT OF BUSINESS. That means NO RMA so take good care of it. Needs cleaning tapes, says once a month but after 2 months its once a week or you get errors.

Summary: If you can't run with the big dogs...
Review: While this is a pretty nice product for the price.. ...I wanted to drop a quick note to let you all know that Onstream has closed its U.S. operations and its future looks bleak. They intend to continue operating in Europe, and insist they have a viable technology.. but I'd be afraid to gamble any money on them now.
