Rating: Summary: HP's software policy sucks Review: I bought HP's 8GB tape drive about 20 months ago. At the time it shipped with only a Windows 95 version of the backup program. When the Windows 98 version became available 3 months later, I was informed that it would cost another $35 to get a "new" version of the software. The title for this review says it all.

Rating: Summary: Be very careful about disaster recovery capabilities Review: I have the internal version. Be careful about buying a device for complete computer backup and disaster recovery. The backup software my tape drive came with requires three things for restoring your computer hard drive from scratch: 1)diskette you can create easily 2) Backup media, your tape 3)MICROSOFT WINDOWS CDROM. #3 means what it says, Microsoft Windows. NOT A MANUFACTURES RESTORATION CD THAT COMES WITH SOME BRANDS OF COMPUTERS. You need software that is in the Windows CD, and is not in the system cdrom. Compaq and HP do NOT provide this Windows cdrom, but a disk with "everything on it to restore the computer". True, it will restore your computer to original factory state, but not your own data or new installations since new. So, in my case, my HP tape drive could not back up my HP computer for complete disaster recovery. I found out the hard way. If you have a Windows Upgrade CDROM, you may be in luck. I had to get special software that RUNS UNDER DOS to back up my system to CDROM and another internal hard drive. Love my computer, and computer support from HP, but the HP Colorado is useless to me.
Rating: Summary: Be very careful about disaster recovery capabilities Review: I ordered this drive on a Saturday from Amazon and received it on the following Tuesday...that's service. Anyway, I paid almost no attention to the installation instructions and it installed fine anyway. Backups go off without a hitch. It seems to be a bit slower than advertised...takes me about 35 minutes to back up 1.6 GB. Great Product and great service

Rating: Summary: Will not work with Windows XP, no 'patch' available Review: I've had one of these for a while now. It's broken 2 tapes. It regularly fails to complete a backup due to errors. The backup software is not compatible with Windows ME and to use 98 they recommended I pay another $30 for an upgrade. It you plan on keeping data backed-up for a while, I wouldn't use HPs. Of course I have a used one for sale, if you're looking for one.

Rating: Summary: Will not work with Windows XP, no 'patch' available Review: This product will not work with Windows XP. I've contacted HP and they referred me to their third party software development company for an update to the software. The third party software company does not respond to my e-mail inquiry when the upgrade will be ready. According to HP representative, HP had expected the upgrade to be available by Christmas, 2001.
