Summary: Good bit o'memory
Review: Have had this for about a week now and it's been great. I'd seen a couple reviews complaining about noisy drives, but it's whisper quiet. The hard drive on my 40MHZ iMac is louder, so I don't notice at all. One reviewer mentioned that it got hot to the touch: it does get a bit warm if you're doing quite a bit of transfers, but it's not hot to the touch. I did, though, mount it in a vertical position (like the picture) to enhance cooling.

The SilverKeeper software works well with my OS10.3. It also comes with a Mac-compatible help guide.

I'm happy with it--would buy another La Cie product based on this experience.

Summary: excellent!
Review: I have had the 120 GB version of this for over a year. It works wonders. I use it with a powerbook that has a pretty small hard drive (relatively). I use it as a media drive and it almost coninuously playing either music or movies.

As for it being noisy, I have it in my living room a few feet from the couch. You can hear it, but it is a subtle wirl. Doesn't bother me at all and it runs when movies are playing.

Oh, and it is really built well. I have nocked mine around a lot. It has a strong metal frame and a stable base.

Summary: Excellent
Review: I have two of these for my Macintosh - I use them for digital video, for which they're perfectly suited. Easy to set up, sleek design, can sit horizontal or vertical, and can be stacked. I can't comment on the included backup software as I use the .mac Backup packed, but the drive itself works perfectly and looks about as good as a hard drive can.

Summary: Noisy.
Review: I thought that the new fluid bearing drives had solved the problem of hard disk noise. I already own an Iomega 120GB HDD 7200 rpm external Firewire drive, and it barely makes a breath of a noise. But this 160 GB LaCie external Firewire drive makes an annoying high frequency whine---you know, the kind that changes volume and phase as you move your head around, that burns into your ears after a while.

Other than the noise, the unit appears to be solidly constructed. An advantage over the Iomega drives is that the LaCie has two FireWire ports so that you can daisy chain more than one drive or FireWire appliance; the Iomega has only one port, and it is not a standard FireWire port, and requires their special cable.

Summary: Meets or exceeds my expectations in every respect
Review: This is a great drive. The main concerns I saw in the other reviews were that it
was loud, and that the drive gets hot inside the case. Either the person who
complained about the noise has the most sensitive ears in the world or
else they had a very different drive from the one I got, because this one is
very quiet. Of course it isn't totally silent, but the spinning noise is just
about inaudible from two feet away, and even when it is accessing data
you only hear a very faint "chucking" noise.

As far as the drive being too hot becasue this enclosure does not have
a fan, the metal case does get warm to the touch but not hot. I can't
comment on longevity as I have only had the drive for a few days.
Also the metal surface is not quite as smooth as it looks on the picture,
but that just makes it harder to damage and easier to hold on to. Overall
I am very satisified with this drive and recommend it to others.

Summary: Loud!
Review: Works perfectly in every respect, but it's very loud. It emits a constant high-pitched whiring noise which becomes quite intolerable after a while.
