Summary: Mine was a bust
Review: Maybe I was just unlucky, but it never worked for me. It constantly gave me error message saying there was problem copying in the middle of file transfer. Also, after I managed to copy some files over to this hard drive, I couldn't access some of the files or even delete them. I just returned it back to amazon. In my opinion, some parts of the hard drive were damaged from the beginning and quailty control was poor.

Summary: Great backup drive -- quiet and sleek-looking
Review: Seagate makes some of the very best external drives on the market. This one is sleek looking and astoundingly quiet. I opted for the 160GB USB/Firewire version because I have an older Dual PIII system that doesn't support USB2 on-board.

The only drawbacks?
--The one-touch button feature is nice but not all that necessary and it's inherently tied to the BounceBack Express software, which -- like so many editions of software you get with hardware devices -- is a pared down edition of the full version, and hence lacking many useful features. The software upgrade costs around $49 -- not very justifiable.
--The 160GB capacity is fast becoming too small for backing up full systems and/or media libraries.

Here's a cool tip that even Seagate probably doesn't want you to know: You can upgrade your external drive to a higher capacity! I was able to purchase a 300GB Seagate drive and install it using the existing case. A word of caution: If you choose to attempt this, you will almost certainly void your warranty and you risk damaging the case. Taking the case apart involves care and make sure you have the new drive formatted and ready with the same volume name as the existing external drive. I can't make any guarantees, only that it worked for me.

Summary: Superb function and build
Review: Seagate's come up with a superb external drive that can serve a variety of functions, including shareable extra storage or backup disk. In the latter capacity, an external drive trades speed for portability; the latter is very useful if you need to back up multiple machines in a household. The drive can be stood up vertically, or stacked horizontally, and the internal fan is very quiet. The unit has an on-off switch, which is handy if you only using this drive intermittently (e.g., backup). The USB and Firewire ports provide connectivity into both the PC and Macintosh worlds - and both cables are included!

Plug-and-play installation on Windows XP took no time at all. The included backup software is simple, but functional, and the one-button backup (initiated from the drive) is as easy as can be, encouraging regular backups. You can buy less expensive external drives from other manufacturers, but the peace of mind that Seagate's design and quality can bring is worth a few extra dollars.

Summary: Easy Install!
Review: The installation of this drive was by far the easiest thing I have done on a computer for a long time! I am using it to store graphics files, and I can work on them in Photoshop as if they are on the main drive: no loss of speed reading or writing. The included "Bounce-Back" backup software wasn't as user friendly, so I uninstalled it and am just using the drive for storage, which is what I wanted it for anyway. Highly recommended.

Summary: Not so hot-swappable as you might be led to believe
Review: The manual for this drive is the kind of graphically-designed thin little pamphlet that's better suited for selling someone a cell phpone than figuring out what's wrong with your hard drive.

There was no real manual with the CD as advertised. This was a shame, as my Seagate crashed within 2 hours of purchase, the filesystem scattered to the winds when the computer crashed and, as luck would have it, the Seagate was still plugged in.

Unreliable consumer kipple.

Summary: Correction to Amazon's Review
Review: The product review says: "So how much will 160 GB actually hold? First off, the drive's capacity as seen by our computer (a PC running Windows XP) was "only" 149.0 GB. While no drive gives you access to all bytes, 10 GB seems like a lot to go missing."

In my opinion, someone who doesn't understand how hard drive sizes are computed shouldn't be writing reviews for Amazon.com - this is basic stuff...

There are two ways manufactures advertise sizes: powers of 10 (that is, 1K = 1000 bytes) and powers of two (or 1K = 1024 bytes). Like other vendors, Seagate states the capacity of drive using a power of 10 number: 160GB = 160,000,000,000 bytes. If you convert this to a power of two number (which is how Windows displays disk sizes), you'll find that it equates exactly to 149.0 GB. There are no "missing" bytes as the review author claims - you get the same 160 billion bytes either way.

Summary: killer diller
Review: There's nothing wrong with Maxtor's external drives, it is just that Seagate does everything just that much better. The Seagate is smaller, quieter, cooler, faster, sturdier and easier to use than the Maxtor. Plus some cool industrial design is at work here. It looks great.

I have 2 computers at home, one at work and a laptop for travel. This drive has made my life so much easier. It works just like a big USB flash drive; simply plug it in and move your files over. It's hot swapable so there's no rebooting involved.

The backup software works well too. Just be forewarned that the first time you use the backup feature it can take quite a while. But after that it looks only for new and updated files and is much faster.

Can't recommend it enough. Superb.

Summary: Fantastic
Review: This drive is worth the exta money. It's sleekly packaged, quiet and a snap to install. I've just ordered and returned two less expensive drives by Iomega and LaCie. Neither worked and the installation of the LaCie ended up trashing my system. There's no comparison. If you value your time and your data, this seems like great investment.

Summary: Just plug and play!
Review: This is a fantastic device!!!

Pros

Very fast. Files transfer very quickly, I've had no complaints.

Very Quiet. You can barely hear this guy at work.

Reliable. Well, I haven't had it for too long, but Seagate is a trusted name who will stand by their products.

Easy setup. On XP, it was just as easy as plugging it in.

Convenience. I have three computers I use often. Sharing data between the three has never been easier. I back up all of my data on this one drive so I have all of my data everywhere I go!!

Portable. It doesn't add too much bulk to my laptop bag and it fits easily (and literally) in the Palm of my hand. When I visited my in-laws last Christmas it was great to just hook this up to their computer and download all of my family's digital photos to them in just a few minutes.

It just looks cool!!

Very light at only 9.5 oz.

Cons

Can't think of any. This is my first choice when purchasing an external hard drive. You can't go wrong.

Summary: Hightly Recommended
Review: This is my first External Hard Drive and I am SO SO very pleased with my purchase. As the other reviewer states, it's quiet, doesn't overheat at all, very fast, looks and feels sturdy and is very simple to use. And the best part is it has lots of space. I've been putting off buying a Hard Drive for some time but decided to take a chance on this one and I'm very happy I made the right choice.
