Summary: so far it works like a charm
Review: (...)so far ive had no problems with this hard drive. easy to install. took a while to format, but thats understandable given the size. note: you will only get about 75 gigs for storage, but i understood why after my friend explained how storage is actually counted/measured. i partitioned it at fat32 and have had no problems with it. i dont use it as my boot drive, but its where all my file sharing programs up & download to & from. so far, im very happy and satisfied with it!

Summary: A constant stream of bad clusters
Review: After about a month of use, my hard drive started having bad clusters. I contacted Western Digital to have the hard drive replaced or repaired, but was told that my hard drive was distributed originally in Europe (although I bought it at a store in Rochester, NY) and that they would not be able to offer any support. I ate the entire cost of the defective hard drive.

Summary: Only a 30gig drive???
Review: I attempted to format and install this drive (80gig 7200) last night and the computer saw it as only a 30gig drive??? The bios read it as a 30gig drive and the Linux Mandrake install saw it as only having 30 as well. I don't know what could be the problem, I will try installing it on another pc to see what happens. It doesn't seem anyone else has had this problem, I will research a little more, in the mean time, buyers beware!

Summary: good retail drive
Review: I bought this after I had two IBM 75GXP drives start showing errors. It is significantly quieter than those drives, measures about the same speed and from my research is more reliable (although my research also uncovered the fact that old floppy disks may be more reliable than the IBM drives). I had no problem installing this in my computer and installing Win 2K on it. The drive comes with a few screws, and an ultra dma cable (use this for best performance). If you are not using Win 2K or Win XP you may have to monkey around with ultra dma modes.

This was a good buy.

Summary: great performance
Review: i just got this drive a month ago as a replacement for my two aging hard drives which were 6 and 12 gb. so far i have had no problems with it and it has performed fine. the only problem i had was related to fdisk when it displayed the size of the drive as around 10 gigs. when i used the included software to format it though everything worked fine and better than fdisk has ever worked for me. my computer configuration is amd 900 mhz, sb audigy platinum, linksys network card, nvidia gforce 2 mx400, and now this hard drive.

Summary: XP Install is a BREEZE!
Review: I just got this drive in 60GB. I had some problems with Maxtor and Windows XP -- so I jumped ship and bought the Western Digital becuase it had the "Designed for Windows XP" label. All I did was plugged it in and booted with the Windows XP CD and I was up and running in no time! So this drive is great for people who are novices at hard drive installs(and are using XP)!! I think it's a little noisy-- and a bit more expensive than others(you pay for the 7200RPM)- but I reccomend it to those of you who want to avoid the headaches!

Summary: Just like the others
Review: It is like other hard drives from western digital but it has like 10 more gigabites. It is sort of hard to instill for newcomers but if your an expert it will be easier than a waitress at a diner. You can hold like a lot of video data too, I mainly use it to edit my home movies.
