Rating: Summary: Lacie refuses to replace a brand new malfunctioning drive Review: I bought this drive 3 months ago. After two months it quit transfering data and froze up when I connected it with both my desktop and laptop computers. I had to reformat the drive and lost a ton of data. I hoped the reformatting would fix the problems. Still once I tried to transfer more than a few megs of data. It froze up again. I tried different firewire cables. I know the fault can't be because of my computer because I have this Hard drive problem with two different computers. I sent it back to LACie for warranty repairs. I just got a phone message from LACie saying they tried to transfer data and they didn't have a problem and they are sending it back to me with nothing done to it. Clearly, they spent just a few minutes with it and didn't look carefully enough at this defective drive. I am out $300 and I'm warning anyone out there. Avoid LACie if you can. The repair department is very bad. Once LACie has your money, they don't care on iota about the customer! There are a lot of other Hard drive manufacturers that probably do a better job at taking care of there customers.
Rating: Summary: may be a fluke but... Review: I bought this drive and couldn't get it to mount so I had to send it back - LaCie support was kind but could do nothing to help, they said it was defective.
Rating: Summary: No Problems After More Than a Year ! Review: I bought this hard drive on August 30, 2003. I haven't had a problem since, and I've been using it practically everyday.
I use an Apple iBook, using Firewire, to transfer my information to and from the drive. In my opinion, much of the issues that have been written here are in regards to users who chose the USB 2.0 version, rather than the Firewire version. The data transfer rate for Firewire is much more reliable than USB 2.0.
I have found the LaCie drive to be simple, well-designed, sleek and reliable. The drive makes minimal noise compared to other brands I have used. The only times that I found it hot, were normally because I had placed something that has disruppted the fan from circulating enough air.
Overall, I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to store large amounts of data in a minimal amount of space.
Rating: Summary: Lacie 250 GB external Hard Drive Review: I got a 200 GB external about a year ago and it still works like its brand new. Because of this i ordered another one instead of looking for a different brand. I know many people that have gone with other brands that have worked fine but when you go and try to move them to a different office and they get bumped once your in trying to get the thing fixed. I have droped my LaCie a few times and it hits the ground hard but i dont worry about it because it always works after i do that. I strongly recommend this to anyone wanting an external hard drive. Oh and the transphering rate is one of the bests. I work with a lot of video stuff and i never get a loss in quality when i transpher stuff to it.
Rating: Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE Review: I had the same problem as electronic fan, after a month this drive refused to transfer data. when i try to copy a file the computer would freeze up. now i'm out $250. i will never buy la cie again. how could they sell stuff like this.
Rating: Summary: Top quality drive at unbeatable price! Review: LaCie top notch quality shines again in this new Porsche designed desktop drive. It's notably smaller and lighter than LaCie's "d2" line of drives. Where d2 uses a metal enclosure, the Porsche drives use metallic plastic with a chromed front. As with most external drives, this is also uses a power brick, so there is no internal power core which generates heat.
The Porsche drives also lack an internal fan, which makes them extremely quiet. The lack of a fan should not be a concern. Today's hard drives are incredibly reliable and able to tolerate heat better. I have recorded hours of continuous DV video using Final Cut Pro without a single dropped frame. The 7200RPM mechanism is more than enough for DV video.
Let's face it, an external 250GB drive for less than US$200 is a whopping good deal! You can buy two to create a 1/2 terabyte RAID for less than $400! Or create a 1 TB RAID for less than $800!
Rating: Summary: TOP NOTCH HARD DRIVE Review: These drives are excellant !. I own 6 of them and never had any problem. Just remember if your operating system is XP to make sure to format drive to NTFS and not FAT32 as is comes for plug and play. XP and FAT32 will not work together and you will crash the drive.
