Summary: Excellent for "On the go"
Review: I have had no problems at all with my Buslink! I am in the service and take it to the ship with me quite frequently. It is rugged, and durable enough to withstand the topsy turvy life at sea and the evils of baggage handlers. I have had excellent performance and am extreamly happy!

Summary: Communication Problems
Review: I have had this drive for approximately 1.5 years and have kept various versions of the drivers. With some of the older drivers, I can get almost functional data backup, but with the most recent driver, I almost always lock up the drive after backing up 250 mBytes of data or so.

My advice is to search for another product or try the Firewire product. I do not have experience with it, but after all the time I have spent attempting to get this drive to work reliably, I am sorry that I bought it. --- GOOD IDEA, BAD IMPLEMENTATION.

Thanks

Summary: Excellent Quality and Easy!!! What a concept!
Review: I purchased the L40-40gb BUSLink about 2 weeks ago and I must say that I'm 100% satisfied. Installation was a snap like a couple of the reviewers said previously. Plug-in the drive to an open USB port and wait for the CD-ROM driver request. You don't even have to turn your PC off to get this product installed in Windows 2000 Professional.

I combined this drive with the Linksys USB 4-Port Hub for spare USB ports and the installation was simple with that as well. Being a grizzled vet from the old days of PC Upgrades, I was surprised at the ease for both pieces of hardware.

The speed of file transfers is quite adaquate. I don't recommend dragging HUGE quantities at a time to the drive because the speed will slow considerably, but I was able to transfer 600mb movies and files within a couple minutes. So consider small as better.

As for drive letters, the install put everything at the end of my drive letters, but you can always change your drive letter order by using the drive properties within Windows, consult a Windwos/upgrade website for technical help.

If you have a little patience, extra USB spots and a craving for more space, this could be your deal of the century. Best of luck.

Summary: Disgruntled
Review: I was all excited about this so I could start a Photo Library Separate from my actual Computer. I was installing this to use with a Gateway Solo 9300 LapTop that is just over 2 years old.

I could not get this to install on my machine. I worked with Buslink, and they could not figure this out, and sent me back to Gateway. I installed this successfully onto another Gateway LapTop with no problems. Buslink did Not want to hear that and still didn't want to work through the problem so they sent me to Gateway. Needless to say it is on its way back.

My Point.... VERY POOR SUPPORT FROM BUSLINK... LOOK ELSEWHERE

Review: I would give this product 5 stars, but it's a bit too slow for that. My 60GB drive was easy to install (less than 5 minutes). It's great for archiving data. I wouldn't recommend it for people needing to transfer large files (300mb or more) from one computer to another on a regular basis. This is a slow drive (USB 1, 5400rpm). It takes about 10 minutes to transfer a 700mb video file from my internal drive onto it. (Smaller file sizes seem to trasnfer more quickly.) However, this is a great low cost option for those, like myself, with large video and audio libraries to archive. It takes a while to move all your files onto it, but once moved you don't lose anything in the way of video or audio playback. So, for the low cost you are sacrificing speed, but you are getting a lot of archive space. If you want faster, you should try USB 2 or Firewire.

Summary: communication problems
Review: I'm happy with the drive except for a couple of significant problems.

1) It changes the logical letters of my CDROM and Zip Drive if I boot with the usb drive turned on.

2) Backup using the (included Retrospect doesn't work). I'm using the Retrospect s/w that comes with the drive to do backups on my main HD (has about 4.5 GB of stuff).

Out of ten tries, the s/w has NOT successfully backed up my C drive once. I usually get: Error - 102 Trouble Communicating. This sometimes happens after backing up most of the drive. I can't trust the backup.

I've been working via email with tech support, but they haven't been real brilliant. I sent them all my set up info and logs from the backup. From the response, I'm not sure they even looked at it.

They said Zip disks (which I have) conflict with all usb drives and that I should get a bios upgrade from my computer manufacturer (my manufacturer doesn't offer an upgrade for that).

I may send my drive back.

I found buslink support to be responsive within 2 days, but not real helpful.

Summary: Simple and Safe
Review: I've used one of these for about a year and a half. With Win98SE on several computers it has been flawless. Easy to set up and just a little on the slow side. Great for general backup. Just remember to power it off completely before plugging it into another computer. And don't forget to defrag and scandisk it, particularly if you forget the advice in the last sentence. I have used several BUSLink products and have had great luck. With new USB 2.0 drives appearing I will probably upgrade, but I'm sure that I'll still find good use for this excellent product.

Summary: Great for MP3's
Review: Just recieved the Buslink external 40GB hard drive in the mail last week. Only took five minutes to install and has been a snap to use. I have over 5,000 MP3's stored on it and use it as a digital archive of my entire music collection, vinyl and CDs alike. Works well with Windows 98 2nd edition. With 40 Gigs of space you can fit an enormous emount of music on it. If used as a storage device this product does the job, I would not, however use it as a platform to run programs off of. Overall I am very happy with this product.
