Summary: Buyer beware...
Review: Well, let's put it this way... I have seen quite a few hard disks crashing in my past 20 odd years working with computers. Usually is starts with some read errors per months slowly accelerating... allowing for corrective action, such as getting a new drive and mirror the existing drive onto it, removing the faulty one... happily plotting along.

But this time it was all different! Seven days after the first read errors, the errors turned into write errors. I got a new drive, mirrored it, and -- believe it or not -- the existing drive died, producing a clonking noise, ten minutes after the disk had been mirrored.

... ethics has become a rare species... why admit having produced a lousy disk drive... the waves will calm... and IBM disks will be bought again.

So far BASF has produced a lousy type of disk drive (~1984), Maxtor in 1989, Western Digital in 1991, and IBM in 2001. So far I haven't bought those brands again.
Despite Seagate being perceived (by many) as second choice, I have used more Seagate drives than any other brand, but I have never experienced a bad one. The funny bit is, IBM has utliled Seagate SCSI drives in the NetFinity server series.
What does this tell you?

All I can say: I wouldn't buy this type of hard disk... and IBM would be silly not to take it off the market.

Best of Luck, Max

Summary: IBM Deskstar 75GXP line
Review: Yes. I recently Purchased 2 IBM Deskstar Drives, 1 Deskstar 75 GXP 60.4 GB hard drive, and a Deskstar 75GXP 30.7 GB, and My G/f's computer is running a DTLA-305020 20.5 GB hard drive. The first time i had a drive fail was earlier this year, when i upgraded a 400 mhz Celeron to 1 GHZ. I was happily screwing down my DVD drive when i heard that all familiar sound while loading Windows XP Professional. "Scratch,Scratch,Scratch,Scratch," "Click,Click,Click,Click,Click,Click," And i got a File Error. I rebooted, hoping for the best, and got the same, and the drive would not recognize in the BIOS. Ok. Ran IBM's DFT came up and said Bad Sectors found, Ran Erase Disk, Drive has been working Flawlessly to this day. 2nd One. IBM Deskstar 75GXP 60.4 GB. After loading my operating systems and Downloads/Mp3's , after a week of having the drive, it did the same thing, "Scratch, Scratch,Scratch,Scratch,Scratch," "Click,Click,Click,Click," The horror the horror, only having half of my stuf backed up on cds' i lost 35 GB of stuff. Ran DFT, Bad Sectors, Ran Erase disk, cleared the drive, working great. 2 days ago. Same thing after loading all my data on it again. "Scratch,Scratch,Scratch," ,"Click,Click,Click,Click,Click," ok This was enough, and to top it all off, it was beeping and clunking, This drives had it!!! Wont even recognize in BIOS anymore.
3. Had a IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30.7 GB harddrive do the same thing, And I thought IBM was supposed to make Excellent drives?? What happened?? MY Advice to you is NOT to buy another deskstar if you can help it. Im sticking with Samsung, Seagate, or MAxtor. My 40 GB samsung is still going strong since day 1.
