Summary: Not recommended
Review: In the first month of infrequent use, it constantly makes scratchy or "clinking" noises. Found bad sectors after a thorough disk scanning. It's not very reliable and just noisy when it's spinning. Fortunately I only use this drive for games and not for critical data, but I still get frustrated for losing my game data. Even though the scratchy sound seemed to have disappeared now that the bad sectors are marked, but there are still occasional clinking noises. This problems seems common in drives of this model even in other sizes (especially the 75GB).

Summary: Excellent choice for upgrading a home system
Review: Installation of this unit and transferring the contents of the HD (a WD 6 Gig) it replaced, including operating system (Windows 98sp2)and all, was truly simple: shut down the machine, pop the new HD in (I did have to swap around my data cable but the documentation is well written and clear, even to remind you that the red strip goes toward the power supply) fire it up, and run the software on the 3.5" floppy. Simple steps, clear illustrated instructions, and all the hardware needed except the phillips head screwdriver. Nice work, IBM!

Summary: Darn near the phinest drives around!
Review: Seriously, this is THE GREATEST drive I have ever owned, going all the way back to '87. These are amazing drives for the price and have actually bought two of them now. I use these drives in the recording studio computer where noise is definitely a factor (someone earlier saying noise doesn't matter?!??!! Yeah right!) and these are by far the quietest drives ever, a far cry from Maxtor and WD! Also, I don't know how many of you have been around some of those old 7,200 RPM SCSI drives but when you get something rotating that fast, there is a really high pitched noise that comes out and DEFINITELY leads to headaches! These drives don't do that and are quieter than a couple of 5,400 drives I have. I ran a couple of tests to see the actual data transfer rates (your never really going to get the speeds that the manufacturer states) and using ATA 100 on an ASUS CUSL2 Motherboard with a PIII 700 overclocked at 933Mhz, I got a steady 71MB transfer rate-- [H]ard as nails! Plus these drives have a feature in them that lifts up the arm whenever the comp is turned off, so you don't need to worry about damage being done to your drive each time you turn off your computer. Recording music, I rely on the drives to store everything the board gets and I don't want to have to worry about corruption or a failing drive. With the 75GXP series I don't worry at all and just keep rolling without the frequent stopping to save the files. And when your dealing with 1Gig+ file sizes, this is important! Trust me kids, don't waste your money with those stupid WD or Maxtor drives-- for a couple dollars more you get top level performance from the people who practically invented hard drives!

Summary: Great drive until I got bad blocks
Review: This drive worked great for me for 1.5 years. It's fast and very QUIET. The only problem is after 1.5 years of normal use, I got some bad sectors and I had to reformat a partition (C: unfortunately) to get them marked. IBM had me do a low level format which declared my hard drive a defective device. I got an RMA and am sending it back for a replacement.

Review: This is a great drive I must say. Have I thought Maxtor is really in the same league as IBM, no. But to tell you the truth beyond the interface differences and the size -- I don't see the difference. Now I may regret these words about Maxtor -- but hey that is what back ups are for.

As I said in the other review...how much does it matter how quiet it is? Not much to me. Is it quiet, yeah. But, its a hard drive. That's like buying an airplane because it corners well on the runway. Needless to say, it doesn't wake up the cat sitting on top of the case.

Summary: Easy setup, quiet operation, fast, plenty of space...
Review: This is a great drive. Setup utility is very well thought out.. docs are clear and concise. Performance is snappy and much quieter than my old Western Digital drive. It's easy to see that the engineering behind this drive is first rate (glass media, ceramic spindle bearings, etc.) You can't go wrong with this drive.

Summary: absolutely solid
Review: This is a rock solid drive with great performance. First of all, the documentation that comes with the drive is excellent, and it should help eliminate any confusion that someone new to installing hardware has. There's both a poster and a manual for install. In addition to the how-to of installation, IBM provides a drive partitioning/formatting/and copying utility. The latter is great for folks who are replacing a current drive with the IBM one. However, if you are new to hardware installation and adding capacity to your computer, go the manual as opposed to the poster for instructions.

The packaging includes an additional jumper, mounting screws, and a high-speed IDE cable. If you plan on installing it in a larger bay, you'll have to provide your own mounting rails. Our package did not include them.

The drive is terribly quiet, even when we left one side of our computer case open. It lives up to its high-speed specs. It's appreciably faster than our current drives--and we have it on an ATA 66 channel. If you have ATA 100 capabilities, you'll notice even better performance.

For comparison's sake, we're using this on a Win98/Debian Linux dual boot system. It's on an ABIT motherboard on a UDMA 66 channel.

Summary: This is the 7200rpm version!
Review: This is the IBM's 30GB HD 7200rpm version with ATA-100 interface, at least the one I got is.

Summary: Fast access and really quiet...can't ask for much more
Review: Well maybe more storage space, but 30GB is alot of space to start off with. Can't say enough about how quiet this drive is...I mean I have to actually stop and listen for it before I can even hear it in operation. The access time is amazingly fast as well. The Ultra ATA-100 with 7200rpm is so much more faster than I though it would be when compared to my Maxtor 5400 rpm drive.

The instructions are crystal clear and the tools IBM includes with the package are excellent. When I first installed this drive I had no clue what I was doing but an hour later I had it installed, formatted, and was putting as much music, pictures, and games as I could find on it.

Needless to say I highly recommend this drive to anyone who is seeking to upgrade their current system or just add another hard drive. I just ordered 2 more IBM drives for my new RAID setup so I really can't tell from first hand experiance how they operate under RAID but from many of the specs I have seen and the reviews that have been done (... and others) these drives operate at blazingly fast speeds. For those of you who need alot of extra room but don't have the cash to spend on the larger drives than this is the drive for you.
