Summary: Not Exactly As Described...
Review: My experience with the "Maxtor" hard drive stems from the fact that it is not a Maxtor. (Maxtor box but Quantum Fireball Plus AS drive.) Drive installed easily but jumper documentation had to be gotten from an online manual at: http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm . If I hadn't had a second working computer to get this documentation I would have been stuck with a non-working drive as the enclosed directions gave the wrong jumper settings. The enclosed floppy software disk didn't work, again back to the Maxtor website to download the MaxBlast software and copy to a new floppy. Beware that Maxtor Diagnostics will not work with this drive and could find no Quantum diagnostics program out there. After the frustration in documenting the right jumper settings, downloading the MaxBlast software, and installing the software bios extension on the older P166 machine the drive finally partitioned and formatted. It is fast, a little noisy, and somewhat hot (give it some extra space in the box). Overall seems to be working well now but please get the online documentation and an extra copy of MaxBlast BEFORE you attempt to install it.

Summary: Easy upgrade for an old computer
Review: This Maxtor 20 gig is a good upgrade for our older Pentium PC's. We upgraded some software and needed more memory. This was a good compromise for group of 4 older pentium pc's without upgrading the processors. But we did replace the RAM.

It's fairly easy to install and the MaxBlast software will print out instructions. Be sure to set your jumpers and don't mix up the primary and secondary master cables. Otherwise it's a piece of cake.

Summary: Maxtor ST0152000H- the R2D2 of Hard Drives
Review: When I'd read reviews of the maxtor drives I was apprehensive about using their data transfer software from my old HD to the new one. I tried, unsuccessfully, to do it many other ways, and ultimately, it turns out their software worked brilliantly. I'm running a 400Mhz AMD-K6 chip on an old school compaq presario (the tempermental kind) and was told that a computer of my... vintage... might not recognize any more space than the 20 gigger. Well, it worked out very nicely, and I couldn't be happier. The software that comes with the HD is very simple and straight forward, very helpful. It's quiet, it's fast, it's dependable, and it's also idiot friendly. Prior to this, I'd not done any kind of hardware installation besides RAM, and they walked me through it quite effortlessly. Just be sure to configure the jumpers the right way and you shouldn't have a problem. Fantastic hard drive!!
