Summary: fast and quiet
Review: Great purchase. This drive is inexpensive, fast, and very quiet. I purchased this drive to replace my old Quantum Bigfoot 5 1/4" 11 gb drive and it's been great. It's cheap enough to consider using it as a second hard drive too.

Summary: One of the best drives I have ever had!
Review: I bought one just like this about two years ago and I haven't had any significant problems with it since. It stays cool and runs great, even though I re-format and install quite a bit (sometimes due to Windows problems but mostly because I like to try other operating systems). Currently I have 4 on my drive, one in a virtual partition within Windows. I wanted to try the newest Red Hat but didn't have enough room, so I ordered another one so I can spread things out a bit.

The installation went great the first time and I am expecting the second drive to be just as reliable.

Summary: The best hard drive I have ever bought.
Review: I bought this as a replacement drive for my 6 gig. Maxtor. A very good drive in its self but not a lot of space. This drive is, without question, the best hard drive I have ever bought. It out performs any other IDE drive I have used. Even my old Western Digital drives. Back from when they were the number one manufacturer. Not only is it fast, it's really very quiet. So quiet that I didn't even know it was on until my computer came on.

I didn't have to play with the jumpers or the Maxtor MaxBlast Plus software at all. I just took the old one out, re-attached the IDE cable and power to the new one, closed up the computers case, and started the computer up. I then had to format the drive, load an operating system, and restore all my data from back-ups. I was up and running in about 30-40 minutes. The drive is jumpered to support this type of replacement right out of the box. If you plan to add a new hard drive for additional storage space you may need to re-jumper both your old drive and your new one.

Every single hard drive created today has a jumper chart on it. The jumper chart will show you where to place the jumper for all three hard drive configuration settings Master, Slave, and Cable Select (Manufacture Default). Tip: If you're placing both drives on the same IDE cable, jumper the old drive as Master and the new drive as Slave.

If you're new to replacing hard drives, I do suggest you obtain help. Replacing a hard drive isn't hard, but it is frustrating if you have never done it before and run into a problem. You should also obtain hardware and warranty information from you computer manufacturer. You don't want to void your warranty just because you opened the computer and you weren't supposed to.

Summary: Maxtor give you trouble to keep their warranty
Review: I had this product on my computer. It crashed recently. When I go thru their warranty process, I feel Maxtor just don't want to replace it.

Summary: Maxtor is the best by FAR...Indestructable
Review: I have had this exact drive for about a year now. ZERO problems
I am always adding deleting reformating everything. I have totally beat on this drive more than any computer user. It is almost like i tried to destroy it any way i could but there really is not destroying this drive. When i first got it i even dropped it on a marble floor.(but i don't recommend this if you can help it) Didn't hurt it a bit. Maxtor is one company that has made a name for themselves by making dependable drives and they back it up with the product.

As a added bonus the installation instructions were simnple and easy to understand for a computer geek or novice. That is something that is very unusual for any computer product.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I just recently bought this exact drive for my employer's machine that needed a new hard drive.

#1 DO NOT get this drive for a system older than 4 years, the headaches aren't worth it.

#2 The drive is NOISY! This is hands down the noisiest HD I have ever installed, even with the case cover on the high pitched whine is very audible.

#3 The drive also seems to be a little unstable as it decided it needed to run scan disk as soon as it was installed with a clean install and a brand new copy of WIN98SE running - looking for surface errors. Buyer beware, this HD from maxtor falls well short of their generally good prduct line standards.

Summary: Dissappoitment
Review: I owned this product for @30 days. I was warned after I bought it that the SCSI version runs very hot and one burnt up on my brother-in-laws system soon after he purchased it. He warned me that it needs much cooling because his burnt up. Near the 30 day warranty my IDE version fried. This unit was a very loud unit to the point that it rattled a solid mid-tower case. It is manufactured by Quantum's fireball which Maxtor acquired. I traded mine in on a Maxtor 5400 40gig which has been bullet proof so far and is very quiet. I have talked with another user who after bringing back two, was happy with the 3rd attributing the bad ones to a bad production lot.

Summary: Boycott Maxtor/Quantum drives!
Review: I've had this drive for a little over two years, and it's already starting to break on me. It shows telltale signs that my old Quantum BigFoot drives used to have... namely, loud clacking noises followed by pauses of a second or so (where the computer becomes inoperable), until one day, you turn the computer on, and the drive clacks and clangs and never boots... and it never will again! The worst case of this happened in college during a week when I had a lot of assignments due, all of which were on the drive.

The prices on their drives are tempting; that's what drew me in. But now I know better to shell out the extra couple of bucks (literally) for a Western Digital or, better yet, Seagate. Maxtor drives may be big, but they're not necessarily built to last.

But if you're looking for a scratch, slave drive, this could be useful. Just don't trust it with important files or your operating system (unless you know how to re-install an operating system).

By the way, the reason I stopped to write this review, is because I am looking for a replacement.

Summary: Not Exactly As Described...
Review: My experience with the "Maxtor" hard drive stems from the fact that it is not a Maxtor. (Maxtor box but Quantum Fireball Plus AS drive.) Drive installed easily but jumper documentation had to be gotten from an online manual at: http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm . If I hadn't had a second working computer to get this documentation I would have been stuck with a non-working drive as the enclosed directions gave the wrong jumper settings. The enclosed floppy software disk didn't work, again back to the Maxtor website to download the MaxBlast software and copy to a new floppy. Beware that Maxtor Diagnostics will not work with this drive and could find no Quantum diagnostics program out there. After the frustration in documenting the right jumper settings, downloading the MaxBlast software, and installing the software bios extension on the older P166 machine the drive finally partitioned and formatted. It is fast, a little noisy, and somewhat hot (give it some extra space in the box). Overall seems to be working well now but please get the online documentation and an extra copy of MaxBlast BEFORE you attempt to install it.
