Summary: Smokin' fast
Review: Everything about this drive was fast. Amazon shipped it immediately and I had it two days from when I ordered. Installation was seamless. It comes with an 80-wire UDMA66 cable, but works fine with UDMA33 if that's all you've got. The 2MB cache makes a HUGE difference (I also have a Maxtor 7200rpm 20Gig with only 512k cache, and it does not have quite as impressive performance). Windows loads dramatically faster. It only takes about 20 seconds from when the "starting windows" screen comes on until the desktop and all tray programs are fully loaded. I can go from power-off to dialed-up and surfing in under 60 seconds. Before, I could go to the kitchen and make myself a snack while waiting for it to boot. Installing programs is also lightning-fast, and rebooting after an install doesn't feel like a pain anymore, it comes back up in no time. Finally, Maxtor's service is awesome if you ever have a problem with the drive. They'll ship you a new one within 2 days without waiting for you to return the defective one first. I have never been more satisfied with a drive, this is all-around the best value on the market.

Summary: Feel cheated!
Review: I feel duped and cheated! When I opened the MAXTOR box, I found a slip of paper that says "IMPORTANT NEWS. Quantum HDD has merged with Maxtor Corp. The drive included in this kit meet Mastor's rigorus quality standards. The MaxDiag utility that came with this kit will NOT work properly with Quantum models, etc, etc.". How am I supposed to diagnose problems WITHOUT it!SO, I didn't purchase a Maxtor hard drive like as advertised!! I will probably NOT buy anything from Amazon OR Maxtor again! Again, I feel cheated and am VERY angry about this!!

Summary: worked for only 14 days
Review: I'm not a hardware jock, so when I decided to install this HD at home one Sunday afternoon I was in a bit of a cold sweat. But I shouldn't have been, installation was a breeze -- the hardest part by far was tightening the screws in the bay (space was cramped). Slaved my old drive to it, no problem.

But don't format the drive using Maxtor's software. I did this and it went so fast that it seemed too good to be true. It was! After a few days a desktop icon went blank, and when I investigated why, I found that not only the file but the whole directory it was in had been lost. I called the computer store and they told me the problem was with the Maxtor formatting software. I'd violated a general rule: unless the installation manual specifically requires you to use their software, use the old DOS standbys fdisk (to partition) and format. Fortunately, the disk was mostly empty anyway, so I didn't lose much data, and I always have full backups so I wasn't too anxious.

The drive itself is whisper-quiet, fast, and roomy. Am very pleased with it so far, but I hope it's not bad luck to rate hardware before the warranty period has expired!

Summary: worked for only 14 days
Review: It was fast. But worked for only 14 days, then it's physically broken, sounded like a broken electric saw. Since Maxtor claims they are not responsible for any data damage, I think my files are forever gone. Besides noise (which is tolerable though), this drive was way too hot, I guess the accumlated heat finally killed it.

Summary: destroyed my system
Review: the instructions say easy as "1-2-3" - but i spent about 8 hours yesterday trying to install this thing and succeeded only in destroying my old drive (i didn't have anywhere large enough to back up the data to before attempting installation). today i'm taking the computer to a data recovery service to the tune of about $600. so i give 1 star on the basis of ease of installation and poor documentation/tech help. if you're a hardware whiz, you may not have similar problems - but for regular people out there - don't try this at home.

Summary: Maxtor hit the "sweet spot" with this drive
Review: This 7200rpm hdd is a remarkable value from a reliable company. The size, speed and overall performance make this a tremendous value. I find it quite easy to install Maxtor drives thanks to their Max-Blast software (version 1.24S was included with my drive, an improvement over versions 9.x & 1.11M). Data transfer from the old drive to the new goes smoothly 9 times out of 10 (I'm a tech and I install hard drives on a regular basis -- usually at least two per day five days a week). Maxtor's solid, no-hassle return policy and 3-year warranty have never let me down. When a 5GB hdd died on me I returned it; they were delayed in getting me a replacement so they apologized and sent me a 13.6GB 7200rpm drive for my trouble. This company means business and I just purchased 3 more of these drives...Highly recommended!

Summary: A solid well made product
Review: This is a high quality product that is easy to install. The only problem is the software that comes with the drive is useless. Go to the maxtor web site and download the max blast software. This program will allow you to format and partition the drive without any problems.
