Summary: Watch Out!!!
Review: ....I strongly recommend using and sticking with Western Digital hard drives. I've installed 10 of those with none of the problems that I encountered with this product.
You have to figure out what the pictures in the documentation mean to set the jumpers as to master or slave settings. Those are well marked on Western Digital's hard drives. I never could get the software that came with the Maxtor or the computer to acknowledge the presence of the hard drive. Even changed the cables. I do not recommend this product at all and in the future plan on purchasing Western Digital no matter what the price. It might be a faster hard drive but that can't be proven by me!!!

Summary: TRUE NOISE
Review: I bought from and had an authorized/certified computer store install this drive in my iMac. I was told it would be a quiet drive, even though it has a higher speed. The only difference between the original drive (of the same manufacturer) and the new drive is the pitch/frequency of the noise. It is much louder than I wanted or expected and I believe louder than the drive it replaced.

I contacted the manufacturer. I was told as long as the drive is working, they could not do anything for it. They did not care about the drive being loud.

If I had to replace it again, it would be with a drive from a different manufacturer.

This drive is way too loud, unless you like the sound of a vacuum cleaner.

Summary: Western Digital should be the ONLY driver you ever buy
Review: I had a Maxtor drive or two mounted as an upgrade to a machine I constantly upgraded in the mid-90s. I don't remember any real problems with that (those) drive(s), and they were worked pretty hard. So, when I started to build a digital audio workstation for music production, I figured this Maxtor drive would work fine. Well, I guess it did, for a while. Now, last week after over a year of not being used hardly at all (seriously, I've used that computer maybe 30 times for various things, and that's it), but being powered up during most of that time, I just had my first hard drive failure. Fortunately, I haven't finished connecting all my recording, midi, and instrument equipment, so I haven't lost any original music.

After building 2 computers, owning 2 laptops, having 2 other machines custom built, and upgrading the heck out of the first custom machine (at least 6 hard drive or RAM/CPU/MoBo upgrades), this Maxtor drive was the first failure. And it was the machine used the least. And it failed just in time to be deemed out of warranty. I'm out about a hundred bucks, plus whatever time it takes me to re-mount another hard drive and reinstall all the software I had (which includes service pack upgrades). I estimate a full Sunday afternoon of work.

So, unless you intend to build a machine that sits around, does no work, and has a hard drive konk out in a matter of 14 months, get a Western Digital.

Summary: Need a trusted place to store your data? This isn't it!
Review: I have 3 computers in my home and have bought various drives from both Western Digital and Maxtor. I happen to have ended up with 9 of this drive or rather I have 2 of this one and 7 of this edition with the Fluid Dymanic Motor. In 2 years of service 3 of these drives have failed. I have had no other drive failures out of the 15 total drives that I have installed. I would find it hard to ever buy a Maxtor drive again. I bought a 120 GB drive from them and it failed within 2 weeks. I did receive an RMA and returned it but it has taken over 2 weeks to get the replacement. Maxtor has good people on their telephone help desk but their web site leaves a lot to be desired. I was told by their web site that one of the failed drives of mine did not exist, when it actually was trying to take my data that I had on it down with it. Make good back-ups and be prepared. With the shortening of the warranty on Maxtor drives to 1 year, I would have to say that there are much better choices on the market than this drive. Try the Western Digital Special Edition drives as a much better choice.

Summary: Great drive for you PC
Review: I have purchased and installed 2 WesternDigital and 3 Maxtor hard drives in the past 5 years. From my personal experience, both are good brand. The prices are very compatible for both drives and are all carried 3 years warranty. However I'd rather choose Maxtor in the future. The Maxtor drives have very good utility and are very user friendly, they are easy to install and come with software to help get them partitioned and formatted even you are a first time user. Ultra ATA/133 interface with 8MB Cache makes the drive 20% faster than the regular one (2MB Cache size). Have used Maxtor in many years and never had a failure. Great Drive!

Summary: Worthless Piece of Crap - Beware!!!!
Review: I installed this hard drive as a slave to an existing HD. Within one week this 80GB drive had failed, taking with it all of my data. The Maxtor installation 'wizards' and Power Max utilities are nearly worthless when a mechanical problem has occurred. Plus, getting Maxtor to believe your story and replace the item is another terrific challenge. The best thing that could come of this tragic case is that hopefully people will be steered to better products as a result of my bad experience with Maxtor and this crappy product.

Summary: Bad experiences with Maxtor drives
Review: I just had a Maxtor 80GB drive fail that was 2 months old. 2 years ago I had a Maxtor 20GB drive fail after 9 months. I have never had a failure from a Western Digital drive. I have bought my last Maxtor ... if a new computer comes with one ... I will not buy it. Based on my experience so far, the failure rate of these drives in the first year is 67% (the replacement for the 20GB did not fail in the first year). Two out of three in this case is bad ... very bad.

Summary: Worthless
Review: I purchased this drive just 13 months ago as a backup for my primary drive and to store my digital pics and video. Now all of a sudden, it just dies and disappears from my system! I went through all of the troubleshooting steps and finally ran the PowerMax utility from Maxtor only to find out, "Your drive is failing." Yep, I think I figured that one out without even having to run the utility. Of course, it's just a month out of warranty so Maxtor won't even touch it. How aggravating! Worst and saddest of all, it was supposedly my backup drive in case my primary drive failed. I had thousands of pics of my one year old, my documents, and the backup file on it! I WILL NEVER BUY another Maxtor product, and you should stay away, too! Somehow I feel Maxtor's 1% failure rate claim is bogus!
