Summary: Tricky Install But Solid Home Performer
Review: I favored this drive over the 40GB 7200RPM Maxtor because I consider space more important than speed for my particular uses. Maxtor themselves will tell you that the faster drive makes a big difference in performance, and can cut some HDD-intensive job times almost in half. So consider your need carefully when buying this one.

The drive comes with everything you need for Windows 9x. The MaxBlast utility should allow even older computers to see the drive with a special Maxtor driver placed in the boot sector of the drive. It also comes with a dual IDE cable and installation hardware.

Under Windows 2000, however, the install was tricky. The MaxBlast utility that comes with the drive didn't work properly, and only wanted to create twenty-eight FAT16 partitions. Web research and a call to Maxtor's helpful technical support number revealed that MaxBlast is incompatible with Windows 2000. On Maxtor's advice, I performed a low-level format of the drive and flashed my bios and the machine saw the drive properly. It should be noted that the drive is recognized as approx. 58 GB in Windows, due to differences in the way different industries calculate a gigabyte.

The drive has run flawlessly so far. It is the third Maxtor drive I've owned, and like the others it shows no problems at all. The drive is excellent for general home use. I occasionally notice the slower speed on very large file transfers, but it's usually not an issue at all.

Summary: Avoid like the plague
Review: I was feeling short on cash so I went against my better judgement and bought maxtor. I work at a computer store and I new maxtor sucked already, but I was being cheep. It lasted me one month, then died straight up. RMA'ed it to maxtor, or course they mixed it up and it took 1 month to get my "refurb". 4 months later its dead again. I'm now about to RMA it again, save yourself the hassel and spend the extra money on an IBM or anything else.

Summary: Excellent product.
Review: I've just installed it and works perfectly. No problems during the installation process and great documentation from the manufacturer. Includes 5.25" installation brackets, extra flat cable and a gab of screws.

Summary: Solid Large HD for Digi-Cam Users
Review: My first Maxtor installed in a 2000 year modest-spec Compaq PC- some minor problems resolved finally by cheating & getting supplier to install (but have installed a couple of Western Digital & Seagate HD's over years more easily in Gateways/IBMs/ Dells). Overall: great price, reliable in use ( 4 months), fine-speed (domestic-level only), & capacity truly useful for digital camcorder work & archiving. Perhaps, even get a spare for an inexpensive RAID backup system.
