Summary: Excellent drive
Review: I've been using this hard drive in the new computer I built for six months now without any problems. It is extremely quiet and fast, and the price is good. The Ultra ATA 133 interface and 7200 RPM speed is great, and it is very noticeably faster than my old 5400 RPM drive. Before I put my case fan in, I couldn't even hear the hard drive over my super-quiet CPU fan (rated for 25 decibels). Maxtor has an excellent reputation for quality and customer service, including an excellent website. The 8GB Maxtor drive in my old computer has gone 5 years without any problems. The only maintenance I've done on it is to change it from FAT32 to NTFS after I got Windows XP. Having worked in a retail store where the only hard drives we sold were by Maxtor, customers were very pleased with the price and performance of these drives, and only a very, very small amount ever came back. I also used a Maxtor drive in another computer I built, and that one has performed flawlessly as well. Installation was simple with the included screws and 5 ΒΌ"mounting brackets. I formatted it easily with Windows, and haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. I would definitely recommend Maxtor drives over those by Seagate or Western Digital. You will not be disappointed by this drive's performance.

Summary: Reliable hard drive
Review: If you are actually reading through reviews on a Maxtor, there's a good chance you are new to buying hard drives. This is the brand to buy.

Maxtor always makes reliable hard drives. I have this one, and have had either Maxtor or Western Digital hard drives in the past.

There are virtually NO problems with Maxtor or Western Digital. Stay away from other brands or low-quality drives branded for PC manufacturers. The last thing you want is to have a hard drive issue. Buy this one (or another of the same brand) without worrying.

Summary: Humming along just fine
Review: In this age of 100 GB drives, why get a 60 GB? Well, since I am still using Win98 the max space accepted (or so I am told) is 128 GB, so it makes most sense to get two 60s and thereby split the potential loss of data if any one drive ever fails.

When I opened up my Dell PC to install this new drive, I discovered that my Dell came with an older Maxtor 20GB drive which has been running fine for about 4 years now. So this is my second Maxtor drive, though I didn't realize that when I made the purchase.

I've had this new Maxtor 60 GB drive for a few weeks now and I am entirely satisfied. Other brands touted how silent they were, but this Maxtor(which didn't tout it) is quiet too - just a humm (vibration) when it is getting data. It is more quiet than the older Maxtor from a few years ago, which rumbles a bit. So clearly they've improved the quietness of this drive.

It was simple to physically insall, though I must admit I cheated a bit and just stuck it inside using some velcro rather than bothering with the included brackets and screws (which are included so one can use either size bay).

In contrast to what others have written, I found the formatting of the drive (the initial setup) to be confusing. I muddled through and though I am not sure precisely what I did, two hours later the drive was up and running perfectly. I suppose that is an endorsement, but you still need to count three and pray that you know what you are doing, or can at least fake it.

I was particularly puzzled by the way that the manual shows several positions for some switches (whereby one chooses if this drive will be the main drive or a secondary drive), but the sticker affixed to the drive itself (which I assume is more up-to-date than the manual) has entirely different positions for the switches. So I had to try a couple variations before I hit the one which in fact worked.

Lastly, a general endorsement of getting a second hard drive: I use Photoshop often, and the files tend to be enormous. I'd been forced to burn off the files to CD-Rs to make room to continue working. What a waste of time and CD-Rs that had been! I am now so pleased to be using my second drive for all my rough drafts and works-in-progress, and then later on copying only the finished file to my primary drive. It feels so refreshing to have this level of neat-ness, where before there had been clutter.

I hadn't realized how simple it was to add a second hard drive. Try it, you'll like it.

Summary: Easy to install
Review: Not only is the Maxtor 60 GB 7200 easy to install but it's also very quiet and fast.

Summary: Love the copy utility
Review: The drive is nice and quiet, but I'd expect that. What blew me away was the copy utility. It comes with a bootable floppy and a CD-ROM with software on it that can make an image of your old drive onto the new drive (provided you can install them both in your computer at the same time). I was able to replace two old, slow, loud, small drives with this drive (partitioned) and not have to re-install anything. It saved me many many hours. Of course, my source drive did not have any bad sectors (a weakness reported by another reviewer).

Summary: Good Backup Drive, Low Price
Review: This drive is my personal backup drive in case something goes awry. It offered good disk size and speed for backup and video editing. This is also my third Maxtor hard drive. None of my other drives have failed in the past 5 years. The only reason I buy more is for more disk space. My first 8.4 GB Maxtor is still working in one of my old computers. Extra mounting screws are included to adapt the drive to a 5 1/4" bay. I recommend Maxtor over others for price and reliability.

Summary: Died after 6 months
Review: This drive was MANUFACTURED in Nov 2002 and it's Aug 2003 and it's dead--no recovery, no saving data. Not exactly on the edge of my seat waiting for the ... replacement drive, either.

Summary: Installation Guide is Confusing
Review: While using Maxtor's drive in my computer since 2/2002, I cannot say anything negative about Maxtor product. I bought this 60GB drive to upgrade that OEM (DELL) installed drive. The first impression and observation: the new drive is much quieter than the old one; the core made from plastic vs. from aluminum, in the old one.

However, I found the installation steps, in the supplied Installation Guide, being confusing and, in the situation similar to mine, unfinished, i.e., abruptly ending. If I exactly followed the steps, I would not be able to boot my system and make the computer operational.

Note: I installed the drive as a Replacement Boot Drive.
