Summary: It has packed up in less than a year of use
Review: Bought this thing last NOvember. Awkward to carry arround with so many wires and adaptors. Found it very slow.
Now suddenly it will not function. Keeps telling me its corrupt!!!.
I have to return to Amazon.

Review: Excellent Mac compatability. It is firewire powered, therefore it is truly portable. I would love to buy an 80 GB version.

Review: I bought a 40gB Pocketdrive a bit over a year ago. The firewire bridge, followed by the USB bridge, have repeatedly failed.I've now had it repaired/replaced 3 times, and this 3rd one has just started doing the exact same thing with one of my pc's (stangely not the other, but on past experience that connection will eventually pack up). I decided I could no longer do for many weeks at a time without an external drive for my portable data, so I bit the bullet and bought a Manhattan USB2 2.5" drive enclosure for $50 (UK) and a 2.5" Fujitsu 60gB hard drive for about $170(UK). It fits into the enclosure in minutes with 4 crosshead screws, looks sleek and works perfectly. The Manhatten/Fujitsu arrangement (and I suppose any other 2.5" hard drive you care to buy) works a treat, is every bit as fast if not faster than the Lacie Pocketdrive, and as an added bonus, the drive takes its power off the USB port (its only USB2, not firewire) which the Lacie doesn't- it needs a power supply for USB. It's also smaller than the Pocketdrive - it actually fits in my shirt pocket, which the Lacie certainly doesn't. Moreover, a Lacie 40gB costs $270(UK) , and a Manhattan enclosure and Seagate 40gB 2.5" drive cost about $180 (UK). $90 saving. Conclusion - Pocketdrive overprices and unreliable. Lacie service (UK) poor.

Summary: beware: fragile
Review: I wanted a drive to move files from work to home etc, but this isnt it. It crashed within a month. The design seems fragile. LaCie (to their credit) replaced it within a week, but I'm convinced this is really a stay at home unit.

Summary: Awesome portable storage solution!
Review: I've had my pocketdrive for well over two years, and I've never had a single problem with it. I will admit, however, after reading other people's reviews, that it could just be that this product was not really made with the PC user in mind. For me, this product was a great extension to my powerbook, without a lot of cables to carry and it doesn't take up much space in my bag. The USB capability was an added plus for me; I took advantage of it to easily transfer files between my mac and desktop PC.
All and all its been a great investment. Unfortunately I had to buy a larger (but more robust) LaCie drive to accomodate my growing needs for storage space and access speed. The downside is that it isn't very portable, so I use them both for different things. Its a shame though; if I could have the best of both combined, now that would be the perfect drive.

Review: I've had this drive for a year now. I've used it with all permutations of PCs & Macs and laptops & desktops and FireWire & USB. For USB on both platforms and for FireWire on PCs, you'll need the power adapter, which is a poorly designed cheap-o part--it timidly plugs into the unit. The problem is that it disconnects frequently and unpredictably from the hard drive. Unfortunately for me, it did this while I was saving an important file, which, along with a few directories, were lost forever. They seem to have corrected this issue with their new disk drives, and I recommend you avoid this still overpriced drive.
