Summary: There's an on/off switch on the front.
Review: One reviewer commented that there is no on/off switch. I just bought the Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM External HD today, and there is definitely an on/off switch on the front of mine.

by the way, this appears to be a very nice product. Solid and reliable so far.

Summary: NO tech support available for Retrospect
Review: The Maxtor hard drive installed without a problem but the documentation for the Retrospect backup software is thin - at best. When I had tech support questions and tried calling and e-mailing for assistance, I was told that they are closed for three days because they are moving offices. This is BACKUP software not a video game. My computer is down and I need assistance to get it back up. This is unacceptable when it comes to restoring a user's ability to use their system.

I've received better tech support for my Playstation for pete's sake. Only buy this product if you don't need any support.

Summary: No complaints so far
Review: was deciding between an external dvd writer or hard-disk. current costs of external dvd writers made me go the way of the hard-disk. other factors that affect my final decision: cost, usb 2.0 and/or firewire capability, brand, number of gigabytes, rpm speed, portability (no special software required).

just bought this a few weeks ago. using it as primary backup for my desktop and laptop computers.

pros: relatively quiet performance, comprehensive backup software.

cons: no on/off switch

would recommend it to anyone who's looking for backup media.

Summary: EZ2Pleez
Review: Well, I read the reviews and sympathize with those who have had problems with the Retrospect software. After a couple of attempts, I gave up on Retrospect. The documentation is not clear and the program is not very intuitive. However, the Maxtor drive has been great. I store all photos and digital video on it, and carry it to each of three different XP computers. Just plug it in and there it is. I love it.

Summary: software doesn't work
Review: Within a month of buying this drive, before I had to get it even half full, it spontaneously failed. It is no longer recognized as formatted and I have tried unsuccessfully to get my data back. It wasn't overworked either, as I hadn't even written any sector more than 3 times. Windows XP may have had something to do with it, but given what others have stated about failing, I believe this (and counterparts of other sizes) are junk. This line of products is crap.
