Summary: Not Impressed
Review: I bought one of these drives ~6 months ago. I use it as my primary backup device. It was working fine until yesterday. I came home and it was making a bunch of clunking noises like the drive heads were moving back and forth randomly. After I cycled the power to the drive and rebooted my system the drive was still making a high-pitched whining sound. Windows did not see the drive.

Bottom line - after no more than 6 months this drive died on me. I lost everything I had backed up to it (luckily I do redunant backups across other computers on my home network). I am throwing the drive out in the trash today. Kind of a let-down because I considered (past tense) Maxstor to be makers of superior/dependable products; I expected far more service from this drive. Perhaps they should invest a little more in the Quality Assurance side of their production lines.

I have two Seagate Barracuda drives in my system. They have been working flawlessly for over 3 years now. I think I will go check out what they have.

Summary: Dependability a Thing of the Past
Review: I have always been impressed with the durability of the Hard Drives purchased in the past, no matter what brand. Most often I would choose Maxtor as the drive of choice. Those days are gone I'm sad to say. I have owned this drive for two years and it has failed terminally without hopes of recovery. I guess nothing has changed, instead of high prices and longevity, it is now cheaper but you will buy more in the long run. I'm sad to see it happen.

Summary: Perfect Secondary/Backup Hard Drive for Laptops!
Review: I have been using Maxtor external hard drives for just over a year now and have made recommendations to family and colleagues which have resulted in them buying many of them as well. So with experience with close to a dozen hard drives, we have not had any problems and have nothing but praise for the drives.

First off, with internal hard drive prices for laptops so expensive and so difficult to install, external hard drives that use firewire (IEEE1394) are a great option. These hard drives use both firewire and USB, so you can take the information and hot swap it among multiple computer (like a thumb drive) or keep it plugged in to a single computer for use a secondary hard drive. I have found virtually no speed difference between accessing files on the external hard drive versus the internal.

The automatic backup feature, makes the hard drive all that much more useful. It comes bundled with Dantz Retrospect Express program which is an easy-to-use option for automatically backing up just what you want with a touch of a button. I backup often, usually just punching the button as I go meet to clients. It usually finishes the automated process by the time I return. Because backing up is so easy to do, when I did lose the hard drive on one of my laptops, I barely missed a beat after I got it replaced, simply restoring the drive image to make my new laptop look just like my old one.

I highly recommend Maxtor external hard drives.

Summary: some people doing reviews are crazy....
Review: I haven't had the drive long enough to write a proper review but I felt I could help by clearing some things up. #1, this drive does NOT have a power button on it. To the person who says it does, did you actually look in the manual and/or push the button? It's not power, it's the Maxtor One Touch button. Maybe you have a different model.

And to the person who claimed that the drive isn't USB 2.0, I'm sorry but that's completely wrong. The drive is 2.0 and backwards compatible to 1.x. To get 2.0 performance you need a USB 2.0 port in your computer!!! They put an asterisk on the box to inform you that if you have 1.1 and want to ugprade to 2.0 they have a card (PCI USB 2.0) they will sell you. I'm sure it was frustrating for you to discover that your PC only had a 1.x USB port and you needed to buy something additional. But a good portion (I would say most) of folks know that to get USB 2.0 speed you need to have a USB 2.0 port. If a company sells you a UDMA 133 IDE drive and you're on UDMA 66 or 100 you're going to get reduced speed until you upgrade your IDE. The person said they replaced it with a Western Digital Drive, but unless that box came with a USB 2.0 PCI card included the results would have been the same.

I've had the drive 1 week so far it seems good and the transfer speed at USB 2.0 is good. Hopefully it will last.

Summary: Hardware is good, software is too much simple
Review: I purchased this hard drive to backup my laptop, planning to use the included software as a tool to do so.
Setting up the drive was actually very simple, usage is also very simple. However the backup software is too much simple for my use and I cannot perform the task I wanted.
The drive is very silent and runs fast enough for my one year old laptop, with a USB hub in between, I still get from 40 to 80Mb/s transfer rate.
Unfortunatelly, I needed more than 4 hours to backup 8Gb of personnal data. And it is not onlyu once, it has to be repeated every time I start a backup, due apparently to some inconsistency between software and windows file properties. So far, I could not perform something satisfactory.
I guess with some more time and less data, something reasonable can be worked out, but if you are busy during the day and don't want to mess with time consumming actions, better select a backup software that saves on transfer time, or move to firewire.

Summary: software doesn't work
Review: I've just read the previous 9 reviews and they certainly differ. There is one constant, however - the so called "one-touch backup" doesn't work. The hardware has worked OK for me so far and I was contemplating buying another identical drive, but I can't seem to find one in a retail store, which may mean that Maxtor is pulling them because of problems. I only use mine for backup, but if there is any chance of mechanical failure I will probably replace it.

Summary: USB 2.0? Not quite!
Review: Maxtor misrepresents this item. It advertises USB 2.0 compatibility. And it's true (sort of)- it will work with a USB 2.0 port. However, it doesn't make use of 2.0 capabilities unless you fork over more cash for an adapter. (Read the fine print on the side of the box). The packaging misleads the buyer as to what he/she is getting. Frankly, this is sleazy. I took my mine back to the retailer for a refund. The retailer agreed with me and said: "Maxtor is ethically challenged." I went with a Western Digital drive after that - no problems.
