Description:

An affordable alternative to component hard-disk recorders, the WinTV PVR-usb turns a PC into a personal video recorder whose only storage limitation is the available space on your hard drive. If you're using a CD or DVD burner, you can store programs for travel or sharing, too. The WinTV PVR-usb uses advanced MPEG2 compression, squeezing videos at a 100:1 ratio while preserving onscreen video quality. At a time when gigabytes are cheaper than ever, the WinTV PVR-usb records full-screen TV at a rate of just 2 GB per hour--or, if you're recording to media, about one hour of lower-resolution audio/video per video CD.

The WinTV PVR-usb's 125-channel cable-ready TV receiver (with dbx-TV reception) lets you watch TV in either a scalable window or in full screen. You can also listen to stereo FM radio through the unit's built-in FM receiver. And the unit plugs directly into your USB port, so installation is a snap. The included WinTV-Scheduler works on a daily, weekly, or random schedule and can be used in making advanced programming so you'll never a favorite program, no matter the broadcast time.

While watching, simply touch a button to pause a TV show, then click it again to continue watching right where you left off, skipping past commercials to catch up to the live broadcast. Enjoy personal instant replays, too, stopping the live-TV action whenever you want to study a key scene.

A key feature, of course, is the ability to record TV shows, play them on a PC, or burn them to CD or DVD for viewing in a home DVD player. Video CDs store up to an hour of audio/video program at approximately VHS tape resolution, and they're playable on computers and most current home and portable DVD players, making them perfect for travel and for sharing programs with your friends and family. (You'll find a list of DVD players that play WinTV-PVR-created video CDs at www.hauppauge.com/dvdplayers.) Hauppauge includes its PC-based "cuts only" software editor for compiling VCDs and DVDs, and the WinTV PVR is compatible with popular editing programs such as MediaStudio 6.0 and ULead DVD MovieFactory 2.0.

Front-panel composite- and S-video inputs permit analog connections with a VCR or camcorder.
