Summary: Great Drive with space to expand
Review: Do you think you won't need this much space? You will if you store mpeg sound files, video clips and graphics. You may find that you are collecting these things before too long.

This drive will make an average computer into a serious entertainment system.

I like Maxtor, I've never had one fail in 15 years working in the computer industry. I rate them in the top 2 or 3 of drive manufacturers.

Why only 4 stars? It is not a must have product. I still LIKE IT and would buy another one.

Summary: What a great drive!
Review: I must say that I have heard of bad things about Maxtor. Frankly, I would take a Maxtor drive any day! I'd give it 10 stars if it was available. I currently have 6 Maxtor hard drives: 4.3 gig, 8.4 gig, 13 gig, 17 gig, 20 gig, 40 gig. I have had these for at least over a year; they range from 1 to 5 years. All of them are working great, and has not given me any problems at all. I have had other brands in the past: WD, Fijitsu, Quantum, Seagate, and IBM, and I must say that none of them has outdone the Maxtor. I hope that you'll find my review useful. I can't wait to get my hands on the new 60 gig Maxtor that has just came out! :)

Summary: Great Product
Review: I had three western digital drive all failed by the third year got a maxtor drive and have no problems

Summary: Maxtor rates one of the best in my system.
Review: I have a Maxtor 2.5 GB - 8.4 GB hard drive as well as this one and the 2 older ones have never needed to be sent in for repairs. I've had the 2.5 for a little over 3 yrs now and the 8.4 for just under 2 years. Compared to the 10GB Western Digital I have which needed repairs only 2 months after I bought it, I think Maxtor's reliability holds up pretty well. Of course, not every drive can be perfect off the line, but I think for the most part the majority of people who use Maxtor will be satisfied with their investment.

Summary: Durability in question
Review: There is nothing wrong with the performance of Maxtor drives but their durability is questionable. Of three Maxtor drives none made it off warranty without replacement. They were finally replaced with another brand and each of these drives has more hours on it than the total of the three Maxtor drives with no problems.

Summary: Hmm, Hmm, Hmmm
Review: I think that Maxtor is top of the line! If U are going to get a new Hard Drive this is the one! It's pretty cheap and has all the features that newer sytems support. I have a ABIT BP6 and it will work great!

Summary: Great Hard Drive
Review: I have bought many Hard Drives this past year, and let me tell you Maxtor is one of the best. This hard drive, is one of the fastest you will find without going towards those expensive SCSI drives. The capacity is the biggest I have seen for less than $300, plus the fact that this Hard Drive comes from a great company. In my opinion Maxtor is the BEST Hard drive manufacturer. The only draw back is that the size of the hard drive makes it hard to maintain without splitting the drive into at least 2-3 partitions. It takes about 10 hours for this hard drive to be defragmented (optimize) when it is 90% full. Of course, this is always the issue when buying a huge hard drive. This is the best Hard Drive yet, both quality and price.

Summary: Maxtor hard drives do not last long
Review: Maxtor hard drives do not last very long. I have four Maxtor hard drives: a 1.6 GB (model 71626AP), a 2.7 GB (model 72700AP), a 13.6GB EIDE ULTRA-DMA/66 3.5LP 7200RPM (model 91366U4), and a 13.00GB EIDE ULTRA- DMA/33 3.5LP 5400RPM QUASAR. The first two died last year 1 month and 2 months after the 3-year warranty period. Called Maxtor and they would not do anything. The third one bought December 1999 occasionally mythically fails to spin up. I may have to get a RMA soon if it gets any worse.

Maxtor's drives are relatively cheaper and its disk tools and on-line RMA are nice. Its disk has good performance when they work. However, I would give a second thought next time before buying their product if their products always fail immediately after the 3-year warranty expires.

Summary: Extremely Fast!
Review: Look anywhere on the internet and all pc editors and columnists will tell you that this is the best hd out there. They are all correct. This drive loads windows in half the time and with 40GB to spare there will be no more partial installation of software or games ever again!

Stop thinking and buy!

Summary: Don't let a bad review frighten you
Review: I know for any product, especially computer products, there are going to be bad reviews. Personally, I don't see how getting one bad apple qualifies a person to advise STAYING FAR AWAY FROM A COMPANY. What I CAN say is that I purchased the Maxtor hard drive after being told it was better than Western Digital. I installed it on computer with no problems as a storage drive. Over a year or two later, after using it as storage, I replaced my old drive and now use it as my main drive. I had NO install problems, no support problems (and I asked my share of questions), the documentation is good, and the software works great. After a year or two and after installing once then reformatting for use as a boot drive, it runs like a charm.
