Summary: Massive Storage, fast access, seems to hold up
Review: For those who need MASSIVE storage, it's time to step up to 120 gigabytes!

Depending on what kind of user you are, this drive is amazing.

If you're planning on maybe getting on the internet and using your computer to write documents, or do your taxes, you probably DO NOT need this much drive... but for hard-core users, this drive will suit you right down to the ground.

I actually moved to this drive from an 80 gig drive that I kept tapping out. I use Windows XP on a split partition with Red Hat Linux 8.0... each O/S (Operating System) takes up some space by themselves, and after I get going with loading up my CDs, Movies, Games, etc... I'm out of space.

I don't even bother with my entertainment center anymore, as I have all my media on my computer. As I tend to move around a lot, I find that not having to wait to unpack all my stuff to find the exact CD I want to listen to has made life pretty sweet!

This drive performs well enough, seems to be holding up okay, and the access time is fairly decent.

If you're looking for something a little smaller, Seagate's 80 Gig Barracuda has been an outstanding drive for me (I have 2, and I've used them both hard for the last 8 months or so). If you really don't have any huge storage needs, I also have had a lot of good experience with the 30 Gigabyte Maxtor drives. I have one right now that has been a rock for the last 2 years. I'm using it now as a back-up for important files!

Summary: Best Massive Storage
Review: Got the Maxtor L01P120 at BestBuy for $59.91 (including taxes and no rebates). Currently I am using it as an external storage device. Used the USB 2.0 to IDE adapter to connect it with my Laptop. Works great.

Summary: Massive Drive Forever!
Review: I actually had a 6G drive for two years until I bought Windows XP and several other programs. It was then that I realized I was running seriously low on space. So I went to the other extreme. Once you get to 40G drives, the prices are not that different. This is way more space than I need, so with an very easy installation (internally and with software) I was able to partition my drive into 18G and 92G (you use up some drive space when partitioning). All my programs went on the 18G and my data on the other. Now I can run games, video, slideshows, everything, without worrying about running out of space or the space needed to run these programs. Maxtor has a great reputation and the drive came with a one-year gaurantee. Bigger can be better if it is a 'name' product. One last note: Amazon usually has the best prices, but I actually paid "a little less" for my drive which included installation! This was at "another store". So if it's not here - shop around.

Summary: UTTER CRAP!
Review: I bought this 120Gb Maxtor drive, and less than six months after installation, had a complete disk failure. There's about 100Gb of data *poof* gone, just like that.

Summary: Tough Hard Drive
Review: I bought this drive to replace an old slave that was much too small (3 gb). My major concern was that my dog opened the package before I got a chance to install it, took the drive out of its case, and tossed it away, then ate the ribbon cable. The existing cable from the old drive fit, and the drive works, dispite of the tough handling from my dog. It installed on my mixed up machine (running with XP) with no problems. Nice to have so much space.

Summary: Great Drive!!!
Review: I bought this Maxtor 120GB SATA drive as an upgrade to my old 20GB Maxtor. I've been using this company for about 6 years, and I've never had a problem with them. Installation was flawless. I think a lot of people have problems installing this drive because they're not used to installing WinXP on SATA drives. It's not difficult, as long as you have the SATA drivers from your mobo chipset OEM or SATA PCI-card OEM, on a floppy drive BEFORE you install WinXP. The drive is a little loud, but I have many case fans and so it doesn't bother me. Fast and dependable drive overall!!

Summary: Easy Installation
Review: I cannot imagine why these reviewers are having difficulty with installation. I do not use the Maxtor software, but instead let Windows XP install the drive. I've installed five Maxtor Drives in the last two years with no problems. One of them did fail after about six months, but Maxtor replaced it in less than a week.

Summary: Major Quality Problems
Review: I had a 60 gig Maxtor drive that failed after about a year in use (25 days after the warranty expired and Maxtor would not replace it.) Because of low price and other good reviews, I replaced it with this 120 gig Maxtor drive. It failed in 2 days. No more Maxtors for me. A Quantum drive was in this machine for 2 years - no problems. I replaced it because I needed a bigger drive.

I am suprised more people don't complain of quality problems with Maxtors. I am now looking for a Quantum or Seagate to replace the Maxtor.

Summary: Never again will I buy Maxtor
Review: I had been using Maxtor drives the past 5 or 6 years. Well let me rephrase - was using old Quantum Fireballs before Maxtor bought that company. So decided Maxtor would be my next purchase. I bought a 40 GB drive a while a go - it failed after about a year of use. So then I bought a 120 GB Maxtor drive. That thing died on me after 6 months, destroying a boat load of data that took me months to get bac (some I would never get back).

The drive gets too hot, and is fairly noisy. One the other hand, I have recently been using a Hitachi/IBM drive and it has been rock solid.

I will never buy another Maxtor drive.
