Summary: It's a good value but don't consider it a "real" hard disk
Review: The 80GB Maxtor is honestly called an "External Storage Device".
I works like a "real" hard disk in quite a few tasks and it doesn't in others. In my case, using Windows 98 on a T21 IBM Thinkpad, it can not transfer large files within itself. I can't use Norton Antivirus because the disk freezes de computer (I use F-Prot in DOS mode and it works). Can not be used as a source for
burning CD's when using Easy CD 5.0.
I think that his drive is great for storing large files and back ups and for the price, is a good buy.

Summary: excellent!
Review: This is to continue my previous posting.... I finally hooked the drive up to my Inspiron 8000 and I really, really like it. The 1394 transfer speed is great, a lot faster than USB. One other pleasant surprise is that the drive is incredibly quiet -- much quieter than my laptop both when just spinning or accessing files. I can't wait to dump my mp3 collection onto it. Highly recommended.

Summary: NOT compatible with Premiere 6.0
Review: Though this device serves well in mass storage, many problems are created when used in video editing with Adobe, especially computer lock-ups! With over 4 hours in phone calls to Sony VAIO and to Adobe it was determined by Adobe that there were no fixes available to cure the Maxtor problem. In fact it was recommended that I no longer use the Maxtor with Adobe. Something about incompatibility with "transfer rates".....I guess I'll need to find secondary purposes for my Maxtor....

Summary: great for storage, not for editing video
Review: To DV editors: While this is a great drive for STORING video. I would NOT recommend it for EDITING video. While editing on my 400Mhz iMac DV SE using either iMovie, or FinalCut Pro, things often get a little choppy. If in iMovie I use both audio tracks, I will even occasionally get an error message about the drive being too slow. It is possible to edit video on the 5400 rpm Maxtor -- and you'll be able to store more than 4 hours of uncompressed DV on it -- but do not expect its performance to equal that of your internal drive.

Summary: Flawless performer, not a problem yet.
Review: Using two of these on a G4 Quicksilver Dual 800 running Mac OS 10.1; mostly for data backup and "attic storage" of programs and such. Run several Classic mode programs direct from the drives with very little lag time. Excellent software, though I've not used it since making the switch from Mac OS 9.1 to OS 10.1. My only complaint, if I would have one, would be the power supplies are rather large; it'd be nice if they were bus-powered. Beyond that, like I said, no complaints, at least for Mac users. A solid performer for a long period.
